Chapter 622
Chapter 622
The three of them entered the secret chamber.
Song Yuantian: “Is the treasure of Chenjia Village the Imperial Jade Seal?”
The secret chamber was lit and not too dark, making it easy to see the surroundings.
Xia Chi: “It is the Imperial Jade Seal, but do you know the secret of the Imperial Jade Seal?”
Hearing Xia Chi’s teasing tone, Song Yuantian was sure that Xia Chi knew something more, so he decided to wait patiently.
After waiting for a while and not hearing any questions from them, Xia Chi couldn’t hold it in any longer. “Master Song returned to Chenjia Village for the Imperial Jade Seal, and those mysterious people who searched through the night are likely after the Imperial Jade Seal as well.”
“Aren’t you curious about why the Imperial Jade Seal is so alluring?”
Bai Lixin & Song Yuantian: “.”
“…” Xia Chi warmed up the crowd himself. “Ahem, just wait, you’re in for a big surprise!”
After passing through a short corridor, they came to another iron door.
A heavy bronze lock hung on the iron door. Xia Chi took a wire out of his backpack and skillfully fiddled with the keyhole. With a “click”, the large bronze lock opened.
S419M clicked his tongue in wonder: [I never thought Xia Chi could pick locks.]
Escape System: [The little white rabbit has finally become a big bad dragon.]
The secret chamber in Master Song’s house wasn’t very large; it was more accurately described as a hidden store.
Behind the iron door was a large store filled with all sorts of antiques. Calligraphy, paintings, porcelain, wood carvings, and iron tools filled the room to the brim.
If the items in this warehouse were taken out and sold, they would likely be worth a fortune.
For others, these were things they might never afford in a lifetime, but here they were casually piled up as if they were just ordinary household clutter.
This was highly uncharacteristic of a businessman who made a living off antiques.
Antiques are rare and delicate; improper storage could easily ruin them. For instance, calligraphy and paintings shouldn’t be stored in such a dark and damp basement, as the fragile paper could easily deteriorate and mold.
Even if Master Song was a nouveau riche, he shouldn’t treat these antiques this way.
Unless these weren’t real antiques at all.
Bai Lixin picked up a scroll that was closest to him and unrolled it. It was a painting of an abstract landscape.
At first glance, the painting looked ancient, bearing the marks of history, and the texture seemed like it had aged over time. But upon closer inspection, the paper showed signs of artificial aging, with a tensile strength not found in genuine ancient paintings.
It was a counterfeit, a fake that could easily pass for the real thing.
Bai Lixin put the scroll back in its place and picked up another.
As expected, it was also a high-quality fake.
Song Yuantian seemed to notice something strange about the antiques as well. He squatted down and examined a few vases closely.
Bai Lixin looked at over a dozen paintings in a row, and none of them were authentic—they were all counterfeits.
As his eyes moved, he and Song Yuantian’s eyes met.
Song Yuantian: “Counterfeits.”
Bai Lixin: “Indeed.”
Xia Chi leaned against the wall with one hand, playing with a jade pendant in the other. “Interesting, right? All the treasures in this warehouse are fakes.”
“This swindler… no wonder he got rich so quickly. Selling fakes as the real thing must have made him a fortune.”
“But that’s not my biggest discovery.” Xia Chi set down the jade pendant, stood on tiptoe with one hand on the wall, and pulled a wooden box from the top shelf. “Brother, President Song, come take a look at this.”
When Bai Lixin and Song Yuantian approached, Xia Chi had already opened the wooden box.
Inside the box was an old piece of cowhide. When unfolded, it was about the size of an A3 sheet of paper. The markings on it were somewhat faded, but still discernible.
In the upper left corner of the cowhide was a drawing of a Jade Seal. The bottom was square and there was a lifelike dragon head on top.
The dragon’s eyes were wide open, exuding an imposing aura.
On the right side of the cowhide were several lines of text.
[The heavens are unpredictable; external enemies are rampant. They come with fierce momentum, coveting our great legacy. The nation is in peril, and it seems difficult to safeguard our country.]
[In times of national crisis, only by hiding the national treasure can we avoid the curse of being condemned for eternity, giving our descendants the chance to rise again.]
[I have hidden the treasure map within the Imperial Jade Seal, and the secret is written on this page.]
[Only by combining the Imperial Jade Seal with this page can the location of the buried treasure be found.]
Beneath these lines of small characters were a series of strange, disjointed lines.
The lines were broken and incomplete, making it difficult to decipher anything from them.
As the cowhide paper stated, only by finding the other page hidden within the Imperial Jade Seal could these fragmented lines be decoded, revealing the location of the hidden treasure within the seal.
By now, things were gradually becoming clearer, as if the fog that had been lingering over the lake had finally dissipated, allowing them to see the clear surface of the water.
They could see the lake’s surface, but the water beneath and the bottom of the lake were still mysteries.
Song Yuantian: “So it turns out that what’s driving Master Song and those mysterious people is not the Imperial Jade Seal itself, but the enormous treasure hidden within the Imperial Jade Seal.”
[Ding, congratulations to the player, exploration progress reached 15%.]
They only made 15% progress after finding this place, it seemed there were still many things they hadn’t discovered.
“The mysterious people you mentioned, I’ve seen them at Master Song’s house,” Xia Chi dropped another bombshell. “I think they are the mysterious people. They were dressed in black and wearing masks.”
Song Yuantian: “What kind of masks?”
Xia Chi thought for a moment, “They wore smiling face masks.”
Song Yuantian frowned.
‘Not bird masks?’
Song Yuantian continued, “What were they doing?”
Xia Chi: “They bought an antique from Master Song. Judging from Master Song’s fawning expression, they must be very powerful. Oh, it seems they’re coming again today; we should be able to see them soon.”
Song Yuantian and Bai Lixin exchanged glances.
Bai Lixin relied on his strong memory to memorize the contents of the cowhide paper. He then spent another half hour going through the warehouse, randomly checking the items, and found that they were all counterfeits—there wasn’t a single genuine piece.
He couldn’t tell if Master Song had hidden the genuine items elsewhere or if he was just a dishonest merchant and never had any real antiques at all—just counterfeits.
The secret chamber was only this big, and it was a dead end inside.
Since Xia Chi said the mysterious people were probably coming soon, they left the chamber.
After closing the chamber door in the study, Bai Lixin returned to Master Song’s desk and picked up the ledger.
The most recent entry in the ledger was from yesterday—an expensive jade piece had been sold for thirty thousand silver.
Thirty thousand silver, three times the amount for leaving his son.
Was the jade piece they sold genuine or fake?
“Brother.”
Xia Chi’s urgent call brought Bai Lixin back from his thoughts. He looked up and saw Xia Chi waving at him, urging him to leave, looking somewhat anxious.
Bai Lixin didn’t linger any longer. After putting the ledger back in its place, he followed Xia Chi out of the study.
The guards paid no attention to their departure, allowing them to leave the study without a second glance.
As they walked farther away, Bai Lixin glanced back at the study and the two guards. The more he looked, the more he felt that something wasn’t right.
But if you asked him to pinpoint what exactly was wrong, he couldn’t say.
Led by the Second Young Master Xia Chi, they smoothly passed through the courtyard and arrived at a spacious living room.
This wasn’t the same living room where Master Song had received them—it was another one.
To be honest, the mansion was quite large. If Xia Chi hadn’t been guiding them, Bai Lixin and Song Yuantian would have spent a whole day just investigating.
There was a folding screen behind the living room. After entering the living room, Xia Chi didn’t linger and led the two directly through the corridor and to the area behind the screen.
As soon as the three of them hid behind the screen, footsteps and voices could be heard outside the living room.
Xia Chi grinned and mouthed to Bai Lixin: Just in time, they’re here.
The screen was in a folding shape, with four panels. Every two panels had a small gap between them—just enough for the three of them to see what was happening outside through these gaps.
Bai Lixin peered through one of the gaps and saw Master Song, who was wearing a robe with copper coin patterns, leading three people into the room.
Master Song’s face was full of smiles, his already wrinkled face creasing even more.
The three people behind him were all dressed in identical black cloaks, each wearing a mask.
Just as Xia Chi had described, the masks were smiling face masks, not the three-dimensional bird masks he had seen on that rainy day. These masks were flat, with a friendly smile painted on them.
They walked in sync, and Bai Lixin’s gaze fell on their feet. They wore black leather boots, their footsteps echoing loudly on the floor.
“My Lords,” Master Song said, his face plastered with a flattering smile. “It’s an honor to have you visit my humble abode again. I apologize for not welcoming you sooner.”
“Master Song,” a rough voice came from one of the black-cloaked figures, “we want Chenjia’s secret treasure.”
The voice was somewhat muffled, with a slight awkwardness to it.
Out of the corner of his eye, Bai Lixin noticed that Song Yuantian had a surprised expression.
Master Song’s face remained ingratiating as he spoke, “My Lords, it’s not that I’m unwilling to give it to you, but the Imperial Jade Seal truly isn’t with me.”
The black-cloaked figure: “We know. What we want is the other half, the cowhide paper.”
The smile on Master Song’s face widened. Although his smile was flattering, a flash of greed appeared in his eyes. “My Lords, the cowhide paper is indeed with me. But to find the treasure, you need me.”
“Only the Chen family can understand those two maps, and I am half a Chen. With my help, you can find what you’re looking for.”
The black-cloaked figure: “You’re very greedy.”
Master Song: “I’m a businessman. Without greed, you can’t make big deals.”
The black-cloaked figure’s tone grew ominous, “But you need to be alive to be greedy.”
Master Song chuckled, rubbing his hands together, “My life is in your hands, my Lords. You’ve seen for yourselves what kind of people live in Chenjia Village.”
The black-cloaked figure: “Are you threatening us?”
Master Song: “How could I dare? Ever since my eldest son died on Rong Mountain, my only wish has been to bring him back to life. Legend has it that the treasure within the Imperial Jade Seal contains a secret treasure that grants immortality and resurrection. I just want to be a good father.”
The black-cloaked figure hesitated for a moment, “Is there really such a thing?”
Master Song’s eyes grew even more frenzied, “Of course it does.”
The black-cloaked figure: “The Chen family is truly detestable; the seal still hasn’t been found.”
Master Song sneered, “I’ve heard some information about the seal’s whereabouts. There’s an adopted son in Chenjia Village, named Lin Xiao. He’s the son of the mountain and the fiancé of the mountain god. While others might think he’s just an outsider the Chen family took in, his name alone shows he carries the hopes and expectations of Chenjia Village. The Imperial Jade Seal is with him.”
The black-cloaked figure declared, “I’ll go capture him right now.”
Bai Lixin: “…”
