Chapter 707
Chapter 707
The sky had darkened at some point, and the hospital felt cold and desolate.
Before leaving, Bai Lixin looked back at the entrance. The taxi he arrived in was still there, as though waiting for a new passenger.
A chilling cold pierced through his body.
Bai Lixin hunched his shoulders and hurried into the elevator just before it closed.
For some reason, the hospital was almost empty today. The corridors were deserted, yet the elevator was crowded.
In the cramped space, Bai Lixin could only squeeze and huddle into a corner like a quail.
The people in the elevator stood silently, not saying a word.
He stretched his arm towards the elevator buttons, but they were too far, just out of reach.
“Could someone please press the button for the fifth floor? Thank you,” Bai Lixin finally spoke up, hoping someone near the buttons would help him.
In the cramped and silent elevator, everyone suddenly turned to look at him.
A multitude of blank, pupil-less white eyes stared directly at him.
Bai Lixin’s body froze, and he quickly covered his mouth.
These weren’t people!
He curled himself deeper into the narrow corner, his mind growing more and more confused.
The driver earlier hadn’t ignored him; he simply didn’t hear him.
He wasn’t waiting for a new passenger; rather, “he” hadn’t actually left the taxi. The driver was waiting for “him” to get off!
His soul was out of his body now!
The sound of murmuring filled the elevator and some of the ghosts began sniffing the air.
“Is there something unusual here in the elevator?”
“There’s a fresh scent, completely different from the smell of decay you guys have.”
“Did someone just speak?”
“The moment he spoke, there was a pleasant fragrance in the air.”
A ghost extended a hand towards him, as if trying to touch him.
Bai Lixin tucked in his chin, shrinking his slender body into an even tighter line.
A voice drifted to his ear.
“Where is he? He smells so good, we must find him.”
Bai Lixin pressed his hand more firmly against his mouth. He didn’t dare breathe or make a sound, afraid his breath might attract the ghosts’ attention.
But in such a confined space, how long could he hide?
Suddenly, a cold hand gripped his shoulder, and he heard a sinister, sharp voice in his ear, “Hehe, found you.”
Bai Lixin subconsciously turned his head. At some point, a pale face had crept close to his shoulder, its empty white eyes nearly pressed against his own.
Just then, the elevator doors opened.
Bai Lixin immediately shoved the hand off his shoulder with all his strength and ran out in a panic.
The ghosts in the elevator seemed unable to leave; they just stood inside, staring blankly at him, with no intention of stepping out.
There was even a hint of…fear on their faces
But Bai Lixin didn’t have time to consider their expressions, escaping from the elevator was his only thought.
He only let out a long sigh of relief when the elevator doors finally closed. Disheveled, he looked around at his surroundings.
A huge number “4” was painted on the wall. He was on the fourth floor, just one level below where Dr. Dijia’s office was located on the fifth floor.
He didn’t dare take the elevator again, so he decided to use the stairs.
The staircase wasn’t far from the elevator, just through two doors.
Now that he understood his condition, Bai Lixin felt strangely calmer.
People feel the most lost when they don’t know what to do, but now he knew what he needed to do.
He had to protect his fragile soul from harm and go to Dr. Dijia for nourishment.
Bai Lixin passed through two doors and reached the stairwell.
The floor was eerily quiet.
There wasn’t a single figure—human or ghost.
It was so desolate, as if this place had been forgotten.
He made it to the fifth floor, but he didn’t find Dr. Dijia in the psychological counseling office.
Instead, there was another female doctor on duty.
Where was Dr. Dijia?
Bai Lixin glanced at the doctor’s duty roster on the wall. It indeed showed that Dr. Dijia was scheduled for today.
A patient walked in and asked the doctor, “Doctor, where is Dr. Dijia?”
The female doctor replied, “He performed surgery yesterday. He’s resting now in the doctors’ quarters on the fourth floor.”
“Psychologists do surgery?” the patient asked in surprise.
“Of course,” the female doctor replied, tapping her head. “The human body is the most complex machine, and the brain is the analyzer of the psyche; psychology reflects brain health. Severe mental illnesses sometimes stem from brain problems and need to be fixed. But this surgery is very intricate—only someone as skilled as Dr. Dijia is qualified to perform it.”
The patient: “Do I need surgery?”
The female doctor looked over the patient’s file. “You only have mild insomnia, there’s no need for surgery.”
Bai Lixin quietly exited the room.
After all that, Dr. Dijia was on the fourth floor where he’d just been.
Bai Lixin returned to the fourth floor and began searching room by room for the doctors’ quarters.
It didn’t take him long to find the room.
Being a soul had its advantages, he didn’t need to open the door to enter.
He drifted through the door into the doctors’ quarters.
The curtains were drawn, and not a single ray of light penetrated the room.
He could vaguely make out someone lying on the bed, and as he moved closer, he could see a sharply defined outline.
Bai Lixin had to lean down and examine the figure closely before confirming it was indeed Dr. Dijia.
The man’s steady breaths came from his nose, and his warm breath washed over Bai Lixin with a faint woody scent.
He was fast asleep and completely defenseless, unaware that a half-dead soul was targeting him.
Bai Lixin’s throat went dry at the thought of what he had to do next.
He swallowed nervously and whispered, “I’m sorry.”
He bent down and pressed his lips to the man’s warm lips.
Dr. Dijia seemed to sense something, and his breathing paused for a moment.
Bai Lixin panicked and froze.
But soon, Dr. Dijia’s breathing returned to normal. Perhaps feeling uncomfortable, he even parted his lips slightly.
Bai Lixin took the opportunity to go deeper.
Unlike the ghost husband, Dr. Dijia’s mouth was warm.
Bai Lixin cautiously searched for his tongue and gently sucked on the liquid.
A warm current flowed from Dr. Dijia’s mouth into Bai Lixin’s, dispelling the chill in his body.
His mind grew hazy, as though he were drunk, and he became bolder without realizing it.
He started to greedily absorb this energy.
If the ghost husband’s aura was as deep as the endless night, Dr. Dijia’s was as warm as brilliant sunlight.
He felt as if he were wrapped in a sun-warmed, soft quilt, and his whole body and mind completely relaxed.
‘Not enough.’
‘It was still not enough.’
A voice inside him clamored.
These few drops of energy were far from enough to bring him back to his body.
Bai Lixin released Dr. Dijia, panting heavily. He looked at the figure beneath him with hot eyes.
The usually gentle and refined man now looked like a ravaged lily. His cheeks were tinged with red, and his lips were slightly swollen.
There was a twisted thrill in seeing something pure crushed.
At that moment, Bai Lixin suddenly understood the ghost husband’s feelings.
Taking a deep breath, he suppressed the strange thoughts stirring within. “I’m sorry for the offense.”
He murmured quietly and, emboldened, moved downwards.
Perhaps the kiss had triggered some physical response in the man’s body.
It was already prepared and waiting.
As the scent of heather filled his mouth, Bai Lixin finally smiled with satisfaction.
He straightened the man’s disheveled clothing, restoring the doctor’s pure and elegant image as though nothing had happened.
Bai Lixin’s eyebrows relaxed, a charming pink blush adorning the corners of his eyes.
He traced the man’s sharp features with his fingertips, sighed softly, and smiled like a mischievous demon.
“Now, I really am a demon that feeds off people’s essence.”
“Thank you for the hospitality, Dr. Dijia. Goodbye.”
Having gathered enough strength, Bai Lixin felt his consciousness being pulled toward somewhere.
He knew this was a sign that his soul was returning to his body.
He did not resist the pull; instead, he welcomed it.
When the room finally quieted, the doctor lying on the bed slowly opened his eyes.
His eyes were clear, without the slightest hint of drowsiness.
He touched his slightly swollen lips and muttered to himself in the empty room, “Welcome back anytime.”
…
Bai Lixin regained consciousness and immediately saw the driver’s concerned face reflected in the rearview mirror. “You finally woke up. I called you several times just now, but you wouldn’t respond.”
The young man rubbed his temples. “Sorry, I must have blacked out.”
The driver quickly waved his hand. “No problem. No one comes to a hospital without reason. You’d better get out now.”
Bai Lixin scanned the QR code and transferred some extra money to the driver.
The driver then watched as Bai Lixin walked into the hospital.
It felt like in this brief ride, the young man had changed.
When he went to the shaman, he was a cold, aloof college student, but as he got out of the car, he seemed… enchanting, like a seductive demon, impossible to look away from.
But he was a man! What was he thinking!
The driver scolded himself and drove off.
Bai Lixin had originally come to the hospital to find Dr. Dijia, but now that he’d obtained what he needed, he no longer felt the need to go in.
But seeing how the driver seemed frightened and practically begged him to get out, he figured he might as well go visit Lawyer Zhou Guang.
The Sun Group had taken full responsibility for Lawyer Zhou Guang’s post-accident care. They arranged a private hospital room and hired two professional caretakers to provide round-the-clock support.
Lawyer Zhou Guang was recovering well. According to the doctor, after another half month of hospitalization and rest, he would be able to go home once the stitches were removed.
Bai Lixin bought a fruit basket from the hospital’s mini-market. But when he entered Lawyer Zhou Guang’s room, he found someone else there.
He had met this person before—it was “President Sun” of the Sun Group.
Bai Lixin had looked her up online afterward and learned her name was Sun Ning, the daughter of the Sun Group’s chairman. She was mainly responsible for real estate and advertising projects.
“Um, am I interrupting?” Bai Lixin stood at the door, unsure whether to enter.
President Sun had specifically come to visit Lawyer Zhou Guang at the hospital, probably to discuss business matters.
Sun Ning was a capable and straightforward woman, she directly beckoned to Bai Lixin. “Come on in.”
Her manner was like that of a restaurant owner calling to customers from the door; Bai Lixin had no choice but to come in.
Once he entered, President Sun resumed her conversation with Zhou Guang. their tones grew somewhat intense, probably in the midst of an argument.
Zhou Guang: “This case doesn’t play to our advantage.”
Sun Ning: “I know, but then make it work in our favor.”
Zhou Guang: “You think I’m a miracle worker?”
Sun Ning: “You are!”
Zhou Guang laughed in exasperation. “President Sun, instead of wasting your time trying to play tricks on me, why don’t you think about how to solve this problem?”
While the two of them were caught up in their intense discussion, Bai Lixin sat idly on the sofa, gazing out at the sunset glow through the window.
As time went on, suddenly the room fell silent.
Then he heard Lawyer Zhou Guang ask, “How is he?”
Sun Ning: “He seems… promising enough, but do you think it’ll work?”
Zhou Guang: “Whether it works or not, you’ll have to try, right? Do you really want to go to court over this?”
“Bai Lixin,” Zhou Guang called out suddenly, breaking the young man’s daydream. Bai Lixin turned around in confusion, only to see both of them staring at him intently.
Bai Lixin: “?”
Zhou Guang gave Sun Ning a look. “You tell him.”
Sun Ning: “Hello, Bai Lixin. I’m Sun Ning, the Executive Director of Sun Media under the Sun Group.”
Not sure what Sun Ning was up to, Bai Lixin replied calmly, “Hello, President Sun. I know who you are.”
Sun Ning: “Are you interested in shooting an advertisement?”
Bai Lixin was filled with question marks.
Wasn’t Sun Ning a company president, not a talent scout?
What kind of advertisement would require a company president to personally recruit someone? Was the company about to go bankrupt?
Zhou Guang went straight to the point, “The ad fee is 500,000.”
Bai Lixin’s tone softened, “At least let me know what this is about.”
“Here’s the situation…”
After listening to Sun Ning’s explanation, Bai Lixin roughly understood what was going on.
While the Sun Group was indeed wealthy, its media subsidiary was still in its early stages.
To maximize profits as quickly as possible, Sun Ning had boldly signed a performance-based gambling agreement with Company A, setting target revenue goals for the next two years.
The plan had been running smoothly until recently, when something happened in the media company.
One of their male artists, who was on the rise, got into serious trouble—not just a scandal, but a potential prison sentence.
As it happened, this artist was a relative of Sun Ning. No one expected a rich young master that had come to the entertainment industry for a “taste of life” to end up tasting prison instead.
Old Master Sun was furious and demanded that Sun Ning get him out at any cost.
Sun Ning had come to Zhou Guang for help with this matter.
But the charges against this male artist were pretty much set in stone. There was no way to clear his name; the only option was to reduce his sentence, turning it from actual imprisonment to probation. But his career in the entertainment industry was as good as over.
This artist’s incident had further ramifications, pulling in numerous contract breaches.
Now the legal and financial teams were in chaos, scrambling to handle the situation. After calculating the penalties, the lawyers and finance team found that the breach costs would nearly equal the projected revenue from the gambling agreement with Company A.
If they could quickly and positively handle some collaborations, they might still have a chance to win the agreement.
But then, another problem arose.
Before the incident, this male artist had signed an endorsement deal with Company B, agreeing to shoot a men’s fragrance ad for them.
Initially, Sun Ning planned to have a more established male artist in the company take over this endorsement, but Company B flatly refused. Company B insisted they had chosen this artist for his unique temperament and potential, and unless Company A provided a comparable artist, they would enforce the penalty clause.
The penalty was a tenfold compensation.
The ad fee was four million, so a tenfold penalty would be forty million.
With that additional forty million, the media company would undoubtedly lose the gambling agreement with Company A.
Forget about bailing him out.
Sun Ning now felt a murderous rage rising within her.
She had painstakingly run this media company for two years, and just as it was nearing the final stretch, such a troublesome situation arose.
Of course, there was indeed something fishy about this. Although that young master was usually a bit reckless, he understood priorities. He was aware of the gambling agreement, so it was unlikely he would do something so foolish at this critical time.
She suspected this incident was most likely orchestrated by Company A to prevent her from winning the agreement, so they resorted to such underhanded tactics.
“So, you’re asking me to replace the young master and shoot the advertisement for Company B?” Bai Lixin thought it was completely absurd.
Sun Ning: “Right now, it’s the only solution. If you agree, I’ll personally take you to meet the president of Company B tomorrow. If he agrees, you’ll be the lifesaver of our company.”
Bai Lixin still found it far-fetched. “What part of me looks like that young master?”
Sun Ning: “Just the way you spoke just now, that nonchalant, charming demeanor, it was spot on.”
Bai Lixin: What?
He felt a bit reluctant. “But I’ve never done an ad before.”
“100,000. Just come with me, and regardless of the outcome, I’ll give you this money.”
“If Company B’s president agrees to use you, I’ll sign a follow-up contract and give you another 500,000.”
Lately, Bai Lixin felt like he’d been attracting money.
The next day, after carefully tidying up in front of the mirror, he found the car Sun Ning sent already waiting outside.
As the heiress of the Sun Group, getting an appointment with someone was relatively easy.
The appointment was at nine in the morning, and when Bai Lixin arrived at Company B, Sun Ning had just arrived as well.
Company B wasn’t actually called Company B; that was just the placeholder Sun Ning used. Its real name was Xuan Yang Group.
After returning home, Bai Lixin looked up some information on the company.
Xuan Yang Group was a company on par with the Sun Group, and its headquarters were overseas. The branch in City B was a subsidiary of Xuan Yang Group.
The head of the subsidiary was quite mysterious, and no information about him was available online.
Following behind Sun Ning, Bai Lixin was smoothly led into the meeting room.
Reportedly, the president of Xuan Yang Group was still in a meeting and asked them to wait for a while.
That “while” turned into an hour.
It was only around ten o’clock that the president finally arrived.
Contrary to Bai Lixin’s expectations, Xuan Yang Group’s president was a very young man.
He wasn’t dressed in a suit but wore casual loungewear. Even though it was just a simple hoodie, it couldn’t hide the strong aura he exuded.
He seemed to be a mixed-race man, with red hair that wouldn’t be seen in H country.
His features had a striking foreign charm, and he carried himself with an air of superiority.
“President Sun, is this your solution?” The man looked down at Bai Lixin with a scrutinizing gaze.
Bai Lixin suddenly felt a little uncomfortable.
The man’s features were handsome, and he even had a smile on his lips. But his eyes were filled with contempt, as if he was an insect that could be crushed at any moment.
Sun Ning: “President Xuan, what do you think?”
“I’m very satisfied,” Bai Lixin thought the man’s gaze was like a venomous snake. “President Sun, you’ve finally found the perfect model to embody the theme of our fragrance.”
He sat down in front of Bai Lixin and his eyes slowly examined him, like a predator eyeing its prey.
Bai Lixin felt even more uncomfortable, and he lowered his head to avoid the man’s gaze.
Suddenly, a hand appeared in front of him, and the man’s voice followed, “My name is Xuan Chishui, the executive president of Xuan Yang Group. What’s your name?”
“My name is Bai Lixin.”
“Bai Lixin,” the man’s voice was pleasant. “We’ll be seeing each other often.”
Bai Lixin: “…”
By the time he came to his senses, he was already sitting in the car on the way back.
He looked down at his hand, not even sure how he had ended up signing the contract.
It was as if he’d been bewitched, turned into a puppet on strings.
He felt a bit uneasy and felt that something about this situation was off.
Why him, of all people?
And how was the contract so conveniently prepared, appearing immediately at Xuan Chishui’s command?
“You’ve really helped me out a lot, Bai Lixin,” Sun Ning looked at him gratefully. “Let me treat you to lunch today.”
Bai Lixin had classes in the afternoon and politely declined her offer.
Sun Ning looked a bit disappointed. “Alright then, let’s set another time when you’re free.”
“In a couple of days, an agent will contact you. The ad shoot will last four days, and the location is in City B. I’ll have the agent negotiate with the other party to choose weekends or times with fewer classes for you. If there are any issues, you can also contact me directly.”
“I noticed you don’t seem to like President Xuan much. If possible, try to avoid him when you see him. Just between us, I don’t like him either.”
“He’s notorious in the industry for being ruthless. If it weren’t for Xuan Yang Group being a company the Sun Group didn’t want to offend, I wouldn’t want to get involved with him either.”
Sun Ning reassured him, “But don’t worry too much. The shoot’s only four days. He’s so busy that you probably won’t have any interactions with him.”
Bai Lixin tried to push down his unease.
Hopefully, it would be that simple.
…
“Bai Lixin, why have you been taking so many leaves lately?”
During the afternoon class, Li Cancan sat beside Bai Lixin. “You haven’t been around much, is everything alright?”
Bai Lixin: “I’m still alive, no big issues.”
“Hahaha,” Li Cancan laughed, her eyes forming crescent moons. “Teacher Dijia has been worried about you, he calls your name every class.”
Bai Lixin’s immediately conjured a messy picture. His ears suddenly became warm and he tried to hide his embarrassment by staying busy.
Ever since Dr. Dijia started teaching this class, what used to be a quiet classroom had transformed into a crowded marketplace, with students who weren’t even registered trying to catch a glimpse of him.
As the man entered the classroom, surrounded by the eager students, Bai Lixin even found himself grateful for the crowd shielding him.
Because the moment the man walked in, a sweet and enticing scent wafted into the room.
Hiding among the crowd, Bai Lixin stole a glance at the eloquent man at the podium, his eyes uncontrollably drawn to his lips as they moved.
Bai Lixin slowly swallowed, and a hint of greed flashed in his eyes.
He was hungry.
