Chapter 102 Part 1 – I’ll Just Keep Both for Myself (I)
Dr. Zheng had been the Feng family’s private doctor for many years, a job he had acquired by chance and considered a fortune. The Feng family members were always easy to get along with, never putting on airs in front of him, and the pay was generous.
Dr. Zheng had always thought he would remain the Feng family’s doctor until retirement. However, he never anticipated that his son would develop a gambling addiction and rack up massive debts. Dr. Zheng knew that even if he sold his house and drained his retirement savings, it wouldn’t be enough to clear his son’s debts.
Just when he was at his wits’ end, Jiang Zhou approached him with a proposition: if he secretly conducted kidney compatibility tests for Miss Jiang Li and Jiang Ruo, Jiang Zhou would help settle his son’s debts.
Dr. Zheng was reluctant to agree, knowing that if the Feng family found out, they would never forgive him. But he had no other choice—he couldn’t bear to see his only son living in hiding to avoid debtors, unable to return home. So he agreed to Jiang Zhou’s terms and received the money to pay off his son’s debts.
At that time, he was actually still holding onto an optimistic hope; that perhaps Miss Jiang Li’s kidney did not match Jiang Ruo, or even if they did, his involvement might remain undiscovered.
Reality, however, was far harsher than he had imagined. A month passed, and while he didn’t face immediate retribution from the Feng family, he received a court summons instead. The Feng family had filed a lawsuit against him, leading to the revocation of his medical license. This meant he was no longer qualified to practice medicine.
But even if he still had his license, what difference would it make? At his age, getting a job at a public hospital was unrealistic, and private hospitals wouldn’t risk offending the Feng family by hiring him.
From that point on, Dr. Zheng was effectively unemployed. With no source of income and a son who remained a disappointment, he often resorted to drowning his sorrows in alcohol. When Jiang Zhou called, he was drunk, but seeing Jiang Zhou’s name on the caller ID instantly sobered him up.
He didn’t know whether he should be grateful to Jiang Zhou or resent him. Without Jiang Zhou, he wouldn’t have ended up in his current predicament. But without Jiang Zhou, his son’s debts would never have been paid.
After a moment of hesitation, Dr. Zheng sighed and chose to answer the call. To his surprise, Jiang Zhou asked him to come to Beijing and repeat the same thing he had done before. Dr. Zheng refused outright: “I still cherish my life, and I also don’t want to drag my son down with me. Find someone else.”
Jiang Zhou quickly replied, “Don’t be so quick to refuse. I’m not planning to touch Jiang Li. If you can’t afford to offend the Feng family, do you think I can?”
Dr. Zheng frowned. “Did you find another panda blood donor?”
Jiang Zhou evaded the question. “You don’t need to worry about that. All you have to do is come to Beijing and help with the compatibility test. Once it’s done, I’ll give you a sum of money to ensure you won’t have to worry for the rest of your life.”
Dr. Zheng sneered. “If I remember correctly, your Jiang family has already gone bankrupt.”
Jiang Zhou clicked his tongue. “The Jiang family is bankrupt, but my mother is the daughter of the Feng family. Do you think I’m worse off than you?”
In truth, Jiang Zhou’s financial situation was already precarious, but Dr. Zheng didn’t know that. All Jiang Zhou needed was to tie him to his cause; everything else would follow.
After a long hesitation, Dr. Zheng finally said, “I can help with the compatibility test. If you can convince someone to donate a kidney, I can even perform the surgery. But you’ll have to pay me market rates.”
Dr. Zheng was well aware that no stranger would willingly donate a kidney to Jiang Ruo. However, if Jiang Zhou could use money to persuade someone let go of their kidney, he could indeed perform the surgery. Jiang Zhou’s actions were illegal to begin with, so it wasn’t surprising for him to turn to a doctor whose license had been revoked.
“Of course,” Jiang Zhou immediately agreed. The two struck a deal and arranged to meet in Beijing to discuss the details further.
…
That evening, Bai Guolin returned to his rented apartment, distressed about how to explain his failure to Jiang Ruo.
Jiang Ruo, however, seemed calm. The moment she saw his expression, she could tell it hadn’t worked out. “The compatibility test wasn’t successful, was it? That’s normal; there’s no need to feel so down.”
Bai Guolin shook his head. “No, it’s not that. The… the hospital refused to do the test. They said both the donor and patient must be present.”
Jiang Ruo sighed softly. “I see.”
If that was the case, finding a suitable kidney for her would become exponentially more difficult. Even if they found a person with the suitable blood type, convincing them to undergo compatibility testing would be nearly impossible.
And even if the other party agreed, what if the test failed? All their efforts would have been in vain.
Perhaps I shouldn’t hold out too much hope for a kidney transplant, Jiang Ruo thought to herself. Living with dialysis would just mean a tougher life and a shorter lifespan.
Seeing her calm demeanor, Bai Guolin quickly tried to comfort her. “Ruoruo, please don’t lose hope. We’ll find a way, and soon.”
Jiang Ruo smiled. “You don’t need to comfort me. I’ve already decided to live well, no matter how—whether through a transplant or dialysis, I’ll keep living.”
“That’s good, that’s good.” Bai Guolin finally breathed a sigh of relief. His biggest fear had been that Jiang Ruo would be despaired and worsen her condition. Now that he knew she wasn’t losing hope, he felt reassured.
