Chapter 104 Part 2 – Lin Zhao Said, Tong Yi Told Me Not to Tell You (II)
Carrying her tray, Zhang Rongrong sat beside Wen Wan with a smile. “I think the boy on the news just now looked familiar. Don’t you think so too? But with the pixelation and fake name, I can’t be sure.”
Wen Wan frowned and said softly, “You don’t have to beat the bush. That is indeed Lin Zhao.”
Zhang Rongrong feigned a look of surprise. “So it’s true? That must be scary! But I think your Lin Zhao is quite kindhearted to actually be willing to donate bone marrow to Jiang Ruo. If he weren’t so gullible, he wouldn’t have ended up being targeted by a criminal group.”
Wen Wan glared at her. “He’s kinder than you, more decent than you, better than you in every way.”
Zhang Rongrong pursed her lips. “I wonder if he’s truly kindhearted or just acting that way because Jiang Ruo is beautiful. Think about it—he even knew later that she wanted his kidney, yet he still agreed to chat with her and encourage her to fight her illness. If you ask me, there’s no way he doesn’t have feelings for her. What do you think?”
Wen Wan: “…”
This person was simply infuriating! Unfortunately, she didn’t know how to refute her—she couldn’t possibly tell Zhang Rongrong that Lin Zhao only agreed to accompany Jiang Zhou to see Jiang Ruo because he was acting as bait.
Seeing Wen Wan rendered speechless, Zhang Rongrong curled her lips in a subtle smirk, feeling she had finally won this round.
Before she could fully enjoy her win, Jiang Li spoke. “If Lin Zhao agreed to donate bone marrow because Jiang Ruo is beautiful, then you should be careful.”
Zhang Rongrong looked at Jiang Li, puzzled. “Why should I be careful? I’m not going to donate bone marrow to anyone, let alone chat with someone who wants my kidney. That kind of danger won’t happen to me.”
Then she turned back to Wen Wan. “I didn’t mean anything by it, really. I was just sharing my thoughts. Don’t overthink it, okay?”
Wen Wan: “…”
So annoying!
Jiang Li gave Zhang Rongrong a quick once-over and declared flatly, “My advice to be careful wasn’t about someone plotting for your kidney. I meant you should take care of your health. Otherwise, if something happens to you in the future, and you need someone to donate bone marrow, you might not find anyone willing.”
Zhang Rongrong snapped, “You’re talking nonsense!”
Jiang Li gave her a puzzled look. “You just said it yourself, didn’t you? That Lin Zhao only agreed to donate bone marrow because Jiang Ruo is beautiful. Then, considering how you look… shouldn’t you be worried?”
“You… are you saying I’m ugly?” Zhang Rongrong’s eyes brimmed with tears. She wasn’t as pretty as Jiang Li or Jiang Ruo, but she wasn’t ugly! Back in high school, she had been the class beauty!
Jiang Li shook her head. “I’m just saying you’re not as pretty as Jiang Ruo, so it might not be as easy to get someone to donate bone marrow for you or cheer you on to fight illness. But I didn’t mean anything by it, really. I was just sharing my thoughts. Don’t overthink it, okay?
Jiang Li’s last remark was an exact imitation of Zhang Rongrong’s, down to the tone of her voice. The imitation was so spot-on that the nearby students couldn’t hold back their laughter.
Zhang Rongrong was overcome with humiliation and anger. Stomping her foot, she turned and ran off.
Wen Wan, who had been amused by Jiang Li’s words, glanced at Zhang Rongrong’s retreating figure and muttered, “She’s so annoying, always saying those sarcastic things. It’s like she feels accomplished when she sees others upset.”
Jiang Li continued eating as she commented, “Don’t pay her any attention. If you let her words affect your mood, then she’s already achieved her goal.”
Wen Wan nodded in agreement. “Jiang Li, I’ve realized you’re really good at clapping back at people. I wish I could react as quickly as you.”
Jiang Li chuckled. “This is nothing. My third uncle is the real master. I heard from the researchers at his institute that his interns often get roasted by him to the point of tears.”
Wen Wan’s eyes filled with admiration. “I wish I could be like you. Every time I argue with someone, I always feel like I didn’t do well enough. After the argument, I’d think about how I should have responded, and come up with all sorts of scenarios in my head. But when the next argument happens, I still don’t do any better.”
Jiang Li smiled and comforted her. “It’s okay. Everyone has areas they’re not good at; you don’t need to push yourself too hard.”
Wen Wan asked in surprise, “Do you have areas you’re not good at? You seem so perfect—like during our first anatomy class. You didn’t even bat an eye.”
Jiang Li answered honestly, “That’s because it wasn’t my first time doing dissection.”
“Huh?” Wen Wan was confused.
Jiang Li explained, “Since I was planning to go to medical school, my uncle had me learn a lot in advance, including dissection. That’s why I didn’t look fazed.”
Wen Wan nodded, “Even so, I still think you’re amazing. In my eyes, you can do anything.”
“I’m not fearless. For example, I’m afraid of heights.”
Wen Wan was surprised. “Afraid of heights? Do you get dizzy when you’re up high?”
Jiang Li shook her head. “If there’s a safety railing, I’m fine even on very tall buildings. But if there’s no railing, I wouldn’t stand there. I also avoid high-altitude rides at amusement parks.”
Wen Wan thought for a moment before commenting, “I don’t think that’s fear of heights. You just don’t like putting yourself in danger—it’s more like you have a strong sense of self-preservation.”
“Well, that makes sense,” Jiang Li nodded, nonchalant. She had said all this just to distract Wen Wan from thinking about what Lin Zhao had done earlier. It wasn’t easy, but she finally succeeded.
She knew that Wen Wan would definitely give Lin Zhao a cold shoulder for a few days—but that wasn’t her problem!
…
After the three criminals were caught, Tong Yi finally felt relieved. Lin Zhao, on the other hand, didn’t feel the same. He frowned as he looked at Tong Yi. “I didn’t tell Wanwan about me acting as bait. She’s definitely mad at me now.”
Tong Yi nodded. “Yeah, I think Wen Wan will be angry. You’d better figure out how to make it up to her.”
Seeing his casual attitude, Lin Zhao frowned. “You didn’t tell Jiang Li about it either. Won’t she be mad?”
Tong Yi was momentarily stunned, “She probably won’t… right?”
Lin Zhao shook his head. “I know Wanwan will be mad. Jiang Li and Wanwan are so close, they’re bound to have a lot in common. So, I think there’s a high chance she’ll be mad too.”
Tong Yi was silent for a few seconds before saying, “Then I’ll just tell Jiang Xiao Li the truth—that it was you who didn’t want Wen Wan to worry, so you told me not to say anything. And since she’d tell Jiang Li, I couldn’t tell her either.”
Lin Zhao: “…”
He stared at Tong Yi expressionlessly. Then, after ten seconds, he turned around and took out his phone to text Wen Wan.
[Wanwan, I didn’t mean to keep this from you. It’s just that Tong Yi didn’t want Jiang Li to worry, so he told me not to tell you. He figured if you knew, Jiang Li would know too.]
