Chapter 126 – I’m Happy Being Her Bootlicking Dog
Chapter 126 – I’m Happy Being Her Bootlicking Dog
Jiang Li naturally had no objections to Feng Qi attending her birthday party—in fact, she couldn’t be more pleased. But she wasn’t sure whether the classmates and friends she had invited would mind. After all, at their age, many people didn’t like being around elders; some even felt that talking to them was a kind of social obligation.
To prepare everyone mentally, Jiang Li opened the temporary group chat she had just created and told her guests about it in advance.
But what surprised her was that not only did no one in the group have any objections, but they were all extremely excited, saying things like they could finally get close to their idol.
Only then did Jiang Li realize: although Feng Qi was technically an elder, he wasn’t that old. More importantly, he was a Nobel Prize-winning research heavyweight. For a bunch of medical students, idolizing him was perfectly normal.
And it wasn’t just her fellow med school students—even her high school friends expressed how thrilled they were at the chance to have a meal with her legendary third uncle.
Jiang Li handed her phone to Feng Qi, showing him the chat history. “Third Uncle, take a look—I don’t know you are so popular!”
Feng Qi raised an eyebrow slightly. “Hmm, I honestly didn’t know either. My personality and temper aren’t exactly pleasant; logically, I shouldn’t be that well-liked.”
Jiang Li: “…”
Third Uncle’s being a humblebrag now? That’s quite hard to get used to!
So she couldn’t resist teasing him, “Then I must interview Mr. Feng Qi, who claims to have a bad temper and personality. Tell me, were you very popular in college? I bet lots of girls had a crush on you back then, right?”
Since starting work, her third uncle had been cooped up in the research institute, with very limited contact with women—let alone women his age. Although the people there admired him, they were all academic types just like him—buried in their research and papers all day long. Even if someone does look up to him, their admiration would be expressed in a calm and rational way. In such an environment, it made sense that he wouldn’t feel particularly “popular.”
But college was a different story—Jiang Li was certain he must’ve been incredibly popular back then. With looks like his, there was no way girls wouldn’t have pursued him. He was already stunning in his thirties, so as a teenager, he must’ve been even more captivating. People are drawn to beauty; it would’ve been impossible for him not to have admirers.
Seeing her gossip-hungry look, Feng Qi let out a chuckle. “I wasn’t as popular as you think. Hardly any girls pursued me in college.”
Jiang Li clearly didn’t believe it. “Third Uncle, if you lie, your nose will grow longer, you know.”
Feng Qi shook his head, chuckling again. “I’m not lying. When I first started college, a girl did try to pursue me, but I said one thing and she gave up immediately.”
Jiang Li asked curiously, “What did you say?”
Feng Qi replied seriously, “I told her that harassing a minor under the age of fifteen was a highly immoral act.”
Jiang Li: “…”
That was so not the direction she had expected this to go. She had heard that Third Uncle had skipped grades and was younger than his classmates in college, but she hadn’t realized how young.
“So you started college at fourteen? That’s insane,” Jiang Li couldn’t help exclaiming.
Feng Qi shook his head. “I was fifteen during my first year, but my birthday’s at the National Day. That girl confessed shortly after the semester began, so technically, I was still under fifteen.”
Jiang Li: “…”
Okay, so he hadn’t turned fifteen yet, but the gap was only ten days or so—that’s quite a precise calculation!
“You were only fifteen, while the average first-year college student is about eighteen. That girl trying to chase you was definitely over the line.” Jiang Li considered herself a rational person. Even if she had a crush on an underage boy, she’d wait until he turned eighteen before confessing.
Then again, she doubted she’d ever fall for someone that young. Her 21-year-old nephew already acted so immature—fifteen-year-old boys? Just imagining it gave her chills.
Hearing this, Feng Qi smiled and said, “I was already over 1.8 meters tall at the time, looking quite mature too. That girl didn’t know I was a minor—she thought I was just using it as an excuse to reject her, and she ended up crying out of frustration.”
“Huh? And then what happened?” Jiang Li asked eagerly.
But Feng Qi suddenly played coy. With a half-smile, he looked at her. “You’ve been interviewing me all this time. Isn’t it my turn to interview you?”
“You can interview me! I swear I’ll answer every question honestly. But you have to finish answering mine first!” Jiang Li was dying to know how it ended.
Feng Qi laughed. “She found out my real age later and came to apologize, even said she wanted to treat me like a little brother. But I refused.”
Jiang Li couldn’t help laughing too. “She was clearly not ready to give up—figured if you became her ‘little brother,’ she could spend more time with you, wait until you grew up, and maybe then you’d fall for her. You know, feelings grow over time.”
She got more animated the more she spoke, and before she knew it, she blurted something completely inappropriate: “So people were already into the little puppy-boy type back then!”
Feng Qi looked at her blankly. “Say it again?”
Jiang Li immediately backed down. “Third Uncle, you are definitely not the puppy-boy type. With your personality, no matter how young you are, there’s no way you’d be anything close to that. I definitely wasn’t talking about you.”
A teenage Feng Qi would definitely be more of a wolf cub than a puppy—maybe even scarier than a grown wolf. But she wasn’t about to say that out loud. If he got mad, she wouldn’t even know how to calm him down.
So she immediately played cute, clinging to his arm and speaking sweetly, “I was just joking. Please don’t hold it against me, okay?”
Feng Qi gave his arm a shake, but when she didn’t let go, he just let her hang on and got straight to the point.
“Now it’s my turn to ask you—did a lot of guys chase after you after you started college?”
Jiang Li thought for a moment and answered honestly, “Not really a lot. At the beginning of the semester, a few upperclassmen confessed to me, but they gave up after I turned them down. Oh, and there was that disgusting Tong Xu—he made such a huge scene. Just thinking about him makes me mad.”
Tong Xu’s public confession hadn’t caused any real harm, but her revulsion was just as strong. To her, he was like a fly—not biting, but revolting and endlessly irritating.
Feng Qi consoled her, “Don’t be upset. I’ve already taught him a lesson for you. As long as his brain isn’t completely rotten, he won’t bother you again.”
Jiang Li let out a sigh of relief. “That’s great. I really hate those clueless men who have no self-awareness at all. Do they think being in love can justify everything?”
Feng Qi raised an eyebrow. “So? Has any guy ever made your heart skip a beat?”
Jiang Li replied with a smile, “Not yet, to be honest. Maybe I’m better suited to be the one doing the chasing?”
Feng Qi frowned. “There’s no one in this world worth you chasing.”
“Yes, yes, of course. In Third Uncle’s eyes, I must be absolutely perfect—probably no one in the world is good enough for me,” Jiang Li teased.
To her surprise, Feng Qi actually nodded. “Mm, that sounds about right.”
Jiang Li: “…”
Seeing the speechless look on her face, Feng Qi reached out and ruffled her hair. “Go rest early. I’ll take you shopping tomorrow.”
Jiang Li’s eyes lit up. “Does that mean anything I like, you’ll buy for me?”
Feng Qi replied with cautious precision, “Let’s not make sweeping promises. What if you take fancy to the Forbidden City or something—I’d be totally out of options.”
Jiang Li was successfully amused by him, “Don’t worry, Uncle. I may be bold, but not that bold!”
Seeing her laugh so freely, Feng Qi wondered if anyone in this world could ever truly deserve Xiao Lizi.
Was this what they called a protective dad complex?
…
After leaving the amusement park, Tong Yi returned to his dorm. Once he changed into clean pants, socks, and shoes, he finally started to feel warm again.
One of his roommates noticed the wet pants he had just taken off and couldn’t help asking, “Weren’t you out early to celebrate Jiang Li’s birthday? How did you end up all soaked?”
Another roommate laughed, “He went out with Jiang Li. Getting wet is par for the course. What’s the big deal?”
In a boys’ dorm, jokes with innuendo were a common occurrence. Hearing that, the other two boys in the room chuckled as well.
But Tong Yi didn’t laugh along. “Joke all you want, but leave Jiang Xiao Li out of it.”
“I’ll say this once—don’t do it again.”
His sudden change in tone left the three roommates stunned. They exchanged looks and quickly realized: Jiang Li is Tong Yi’s bottom line. Teasing was fine in general, but crude jokes like that were a no-go.
One of the boys chuckled, “Alright, we promise not to mention Jiang Li in our jokes anymore.”
Another didn’t say anything but silently agreed that since Tong Yi had taken it that seriously, they really should avoid dragging Jiang Li into their humor from now on. But the guy who had made the joke felt his pride was wounded. He muttered under his breath, “So you can joke about anyone else, but Jiang Li’s off-limits? What makes her so special? When you guys tease me about my girlfriend, I don’t say anything.”
Tong Yi sneered: “First of all, I’ve never made fun of your girlfriend. Second, what is your girlfriend anyway—she’s not even in the same league as Jiang Xiao Li.”
Of course the guy got pissed. He jumped to his feet. “Tong Yi, that’s going too far. If my girlfriend’s nothing, then Jiang Li is—”
Before he could finish, one of the other roommates quickly pulled him back and covered his mouth. “Cut it out. If you hadn’t brought up Jiang Li first, Tong Yi wouldn’t have gotten mad.”
The guy shook off his roommate’s hand. “It was just a joke! Does he have to be so uptight? He treats Jiang Li like a goddess, but does she even let him touch her? She’s clearly just stringing him along. Honestly, Tong Yi is nothing but a bootlicking dog!”
The roommate frowned. “You’re being too much. How Tong Yi and Jiang Li get along is between the two of them.”
The guy rolled his eyes. “How they act is their business. How I comment on it is mine. And in my opinion, Tong Yi is just Jiang Li’s dog.”
The other two exchanged a look and chose silence—if a fight broke out, it would be hard to take sides.
They expected Tong Yi to get angry at being called a dog, but to their surprise, he suddenly smiled. “If I’m Jiang Xiao Li’s dog, I’m happy to be one. And just so you know, what I said earlier about your girlfriend being nothing—I meant that.”
The guy exploded with rage. “Tong Yi, don’t think you can go too far just because your family’s got money!”
Still smiling, Tong Yi took out his phone, opened his WeChat contacts, and tapped on the “New Friends” section. Then he held the screen in front of the guy’s face.
“I can go far because I do have money. That’s why your girlfriend keeps trying to add me on WeChat. Even after I rejected her, she kept spamming messages in the request box. I never brought it up before—out of consideration for you.”
