Chapter 468: Invitation (1)
Chapter 468: Invitation (1)
Kyrus pulled his wand back and did a peculiar flick motion that summoned a spell circle and transformed it into a fire whip that blazed hot and went swinging at Revon. By its magical strength and the aura that began to exude from Kyrus’s body, the spell and the caster were both at the sixth circle.
Kaide’s magical strength was similar to that of his brother. The little bit of difference between them was that he, unlike Kyrus, was at the peak of the sixth circle. He had a closer look at the Seventh circle.
Kaide made a circular motion above his head with his wand, spinning it fast until there was a tingling charge in the air before lightning began to crackle and collect around the top of his finger. The appearance of the spell circle responsible for this was very blink-and-you-miss-it in speed and with a very powerful thrust, Kaide sent the charge of lightning at Revon.
Revon had one hand behind his back with his wand held casually by his side as he moved to the side and sidestepped the fire whip as it cracked against the ground and singed it.
With a sneer still on his lips, Revon swung his wand casually, creating a little force of wind that smacked the lightning aside so it struck the wall behind, breaking a hole through it.
"It’s been so long since I saw either of you two spell cast," Revon said and shook his head,
"If this is still the level of your skills, you’re really not making a case for not being disappointments."
With a frown, Kyrus and Kaide were already preparing more spells and they tossed them at their father, one after the other.
One, a violent cyclone of wind that released barrages of blades that threatened to rip right through magical defenses. The other was barriers molded from earth to slam at Revon from both sides and crush him.
This time, Revon didn’t sidestep. He just pointed his wand at his feet. A spell circle appeared and a hurricane was summoned with enough force to unravel the cyclone of wind and send its wind blades back to the sender and more than enough strength to shatter the earthen barriers that were aiming to crush him.
"Ah!" Kyrus cried out as he was forced to defend himself against his own ricocheting wind blades.
With a flick of his wrist, Revon caused his conjured hurricane to split in two, before causing each identical hurricane to change shapes and become serpentine as they slithered all about.
At first, the brothers stood ready because they believed the attacks were coming for them, only for the serpentine water spells to swerve around the two and converge on Kaya.
"No!" Kaide yelled with a powerful-looking pull of mana as he dragged his wand down from his legs to above his head, and summoned a lightning trail around his body to move fast enough to place himself between Kaya and the attacks.
"Stay back!" He yelled to the two serpentine water spells as though they were sentient and could hear him. But even then, he was already conjuring Earthen barriers to defend against them.
*BANG!!!*
The force of the collision destroyed the earthen barriers instantly and the serpentine formations kept moving, smashing into more and more earthen formations that Kaide summoned for defense.
At first, it seemed like a fruitless endeavor but Kaide noticed that after every collision, the serpentine water spells lost some of their volume and thus some of their strength.
So when Kyrus yelled a spell at the top of his lungs to summon a massive column of fire that descended right as the two water spells were about to converge on Kaya, the collision of spells was enough to cancel them all out.
*BANG!!!*
*BOOM!!!*
The shockwave from the explosive impact was so great that Kaide had to brace himself to not get thrown away. He looked over at Kaya and saw her acting as if nothing had happened. She was still as she had been when he came to defend her from the attack; dragging the end of her staff across the ground and drawing strange patterns.
At first, Kaide wondered if Kaya was just that indomitable. But then he looked closer and saw the little shake in her hands as she moved the staff. He saw the perspiration above her brow as she continued drawing the patterns.
It became clear then that Kaya was struggling and had been affected by the resulting shockwave even more than Kaide. It was just that whatever she was doing was so important that she couldn’t dare stop it.
Kaide was right.
Kaya was playing this all by ear.
Nature Magic had always been instinctive for her and whatever spells she cast were all her own creations from piecing together symbols she found in the Codex. Unlike the basic Elements (Fire, Water, Wind, and Earth) and the most common Unique Elements (Dark and Light), the Arcane Codex didn’t have Chapters dedicated to other niche Unique Elements.
It’s why families who have Ancestors to create Unique Elements have a separate codex where they record all the derived Arcane symbols i.e. the Arcane symbols they create specifically for that unique Element.
Kaya had no access to any Elves or anyone with an affinity to Nature Magic so she had no access to Arcane symbols that may have been created for the element. So really, she had always made her own stuff up.
Interestingly, while Nature Magic was most closely related to Light Magic in terms of divinity, Kaya’s Nature Magic’s Arcane symbol derivations had come from Water, Wind, and Earth Elements as she had found that they had a bit of Nature within them and vice versa.
In any case, the patterns Kaya was drawing were derivations. She had never tested them out and had no guarantee they would work. She had no one to ask and confirm her created spells with and really only planned to use them for emergencies. Hell, she had planned to confront and defeat the Malevolent Aura by just shooting it with attacks of Nature energy—the only kind that would have an effect—before calling it a day.
But that wasn’t going to work now.
Just as talking her father down and helping him work through his issues was no longer enough, just ’fighting’ the Malevolent Aura also wasn’t.
So she was left with this plan that she wasn’t confident in. So she couldn’t afford to be shaken by shockwaves as it would be so terrible to make things worse by getting something about the patterns wrong. She just had to trust that her brothers could protect her and act as unbothered as she possibly could to the effects and sounds of the battle happening around her.
Speaking of the battle, it had heated up.
Both Kyrus and Kaide had gotten slammed against the wall a few times, only barely getting away before their father delivered follow-up attacks. Every attack they sent his way, he parried with ease, before countering with deadly force. All with that cold cackle of his.
By now, the sounds of battle had summoned guards over. Really the guards should have been there earlier but the infamous oppressive air all over this section had kept them away since they couldn’t gain entry anyway.
Alas, the sounds of combat were getting far too loud and impactful for them to simply stay aside. Upon arrival, the guards were surprised to see that the oppressive air was gone and even more surprised to see that the reason for the sounds of combat was a contest between father and sons. With a side of a staff-holding pattern-drawing daughter.
And while the guards watched, a pillar of earth summoned by Kaide was taken control of by their Lord, Count Revon Aeisling, and slammed so hard into Kyrus’s chest that the crack was heard by people two floors down and up.
