Chapter 1618 - 1619: It’s Not Like We Can’t Afford It

Arriving in Guangcheng, the elderly were visiting for the first time and didn’t find staying at home interesting. Cheng Su decided to take them shopping for things at the Cheng family’s Lailai Department Store, where items were high-end and expensive, so much so that even the price tags were intimidating.

But Cheng Su wasn’t concerned about money and just let them pick whatever they wanted. If they found something, tried it on, and liked it, she’d buy it.

"Xiao Qi is hungry too. I’ll feed him some milk first. You can look around, and if you like anything, try it out; I’ll be right back." Cheng Su said as she led them to the clothing department.

In recent days, everyone understood that Cheng Su would never breastfeed in public. Even if absolutely necessary, she would first put on a modified nursing top that she designed herself, covering up completely.

Mother Cheng had some criticisms about her fussiness. Many people just lift their clothes and feed like that, but not Cheng Su; she fusses around for a while before she can feed, leaving the child hungry and crying.

Cheng Su paid her no mind. Mother Cheng eventually saw it and stopped commenting; she had to admit that covering up like that while feeding looked much more elegant than casually lifting up one’s clothes in public.

Thus, seeing Cheng Su leaving was not surprising; the child’s immediate need to be fed was important. The elders looked at the seemingly high-end clothing store, feeling a bit hesitant.

"Visiting Guangcheng, you don’t realize until you see it; the outside world is so much larger and more exciting. The restaurant we went to last night was the best place I’ve ever visited in my life," Mother Cheng said with a laugh.

"Indeed," Mother Qi agreed.

"Come on, in-law, since we’re here, let’s pick out some stylish clothes to wear. In a few days, there’s a wedding banquet we can dress up for, and they can be worn for New Year’s too!" Mother Cheng said, holding Mother Qi’s hand.

Mother Qi hesitated briefly, but thinking of the Cheng family’s wealth, she nodded, and they went together.

...

Cheng Su returned after feeding Xiao Qi and saw the others still standing in place, feeling puzzled.

"Didn’t I ask you to go ahead? Why aren’t you going in?" Cheng Su asked with a smile.

Mother Cheng’s face was flushed, and her eyes had a hint of tears, looking very aggrieved and angry.

Mother Qi was the same.

Did the two of them argue?

Cheng Su looked at her father and father-in-law, noticing their slightly red faces, appearing somewhat embarrassed and angry, making her feel even more puzzled.

"What’s going on?" she asked with a frown.

"Let’s leave. We have money but won’t spend it here. They’re all just looking down on us," Mother Cheng said angrily.

Cheng Su was taken aback; that statement’s meaning...

She looked toward the store and saw two uniformed salespeople whispering to each other, their eyes full of contempt and disdain. She was all too familiar with that look—they were looking down on them.

She glanced at the group, feeling slightly heartache.

Her parents and in-laws were people who had spent their lives working in hardship, and their small farmer appearance was obvious. Though they wore the best clothes Cheng Su had bought for them in Qing City, the timid and shabby vibe was evident from their demeanor.

Were they scorned and assumed to not afford anything, thus driven away?

Cheng Su felt saddened, but soon a fire of anger rose in her heart. The origin and status of a person are determined from the beginning, and fairness is impossible.

It’s normal for people to look down on the poor, but as service personnel, your work decides your service, so why look down on people? Why assume they can’t afford it? Why think they’re unworthy? Why is it acceptable to humiliate them?

"Why should we leave? It’s not like we can’t afford it!" Cheng Su’s stubborn side kicked in, "Let’s go, go in and pick out clothes. I want to see who dares to look down on us!"
