Chapter 2003: Chapter 2005: Peace of Mind
Cheng Su bought a place for her parents, not in the same neighborhood as her own, but not far either, on Construction Road. It’s only about half an hour away by bus.
The place isn’t newly built, it’s also one of those work-unit apartments. The whole building belongs to one government office, just that this particular family emigrated, so they put it up for sale.
Two bedrooms and a living room, a north–south layout, more than enough for them to live in. According to Cheng Su’s plan, they’ll live here for now and switch to something bigger later.
"Even though it’s only two bedrooms, the space is quite big. Not bad at all. It’s just, if you and your husband come back to stay, there’ll be nowhere for you to sleep," Mother Cheng said, looking all around, delighted.
Cheng Su said, "This place is only half an hour’s bus ride from my apartment, it’s not far. We can just go back home to sleep."
"The main thing is, this place is pretty new," Father Cheng said, hands clasped behind his back.
"Big Brother, this is work-unit housing built in ’87, of course it’s new. You two just need to move your clothes in and you’re good. Inside and out, I already had Xiaozhi do the renovation with me!" Third Uncle Cheng said with a smile. "And since they’re all work-unit flats, the neighbors are all educated people. It feels safe living here."
"But we’re from the countryside," Mother Cheng said, rubbing her hands.
"What’s the big deal about that, Mom? Lots of these assigned flats aren’t necessarily lived in by the people they were given to. Don’t look down on yourself!" Cheng Su said, laughing.
Mother Cheng gave her a playful glare, then went off to look at her own room.
Cheng Su stayed on the sofa talking with Third Uncle Cheng.
"...I heard Grandpa say that your business is doing pretty well now, Third Uncle. Is there anything that doesn’t feel quite right?" Cheng Su asked.
Third Uncle Cheng said, "It’s fine. With the Cheng family connections, everything goes smoothly. Otherwise it wouldn’t be growing like this."
"The key thing is that quality and workmanship have to be solid, Third Uncle. Renovation is a kind of face project, and with houses, it’s for people to live in, so the quality has to be good. We shouldn’t be greedy for those tiny profits. Once we build up a good brand and people trust us, jobs will just keep coming on their own," Cheng Su said.
"I know that. You have to be honest in business. And how could you be careless with places people live in? I always say, even if it’s a bit slower, we have to deliver good quality. That’s the only way to do business for the long run!" Third Uncle Cheng said at once.
Only then did Cheng Su smile and say, "Looks like I was worrying too much. You already understand the way of doing business inside out, and here I was still showing off."
"You child, we’re family, what’s this about showing off? I should be learning from you!" Third Uncle Cheng said. "Oh, and congratulations on graduating from university!"
Cheng Su thanked him, then started talking about her two younger male cousins. They’d both already received their university admission notices early, technically early admission. They were good kids, top in both conduct and grades.
Third Uncle Cheng’s face broke into a huge smile as well. "Our Cheng family finally has some educated people we can be proud of."
"So, Third Uncle, are you planning to have them take over the business?"
"I already said, since we’ve started our own company, we can’t let talent flow off to the outsiders. They should keep that in mind when they pick their majors. Like your younger uncle, study something in design—don’t they have interior design nowadays? Or pick something in business, so they can help me in the future," Third Uncle Cheng said, full of ambition.
Cheng Su agreed. "I don’t know when my parents will move here. Since my two younger cousins are both going to university and leaving home, shouldn’t Third Aunt move here too and keep you company?"
Third Uncle Cheng slapped his thigh and laughed. "You and I really think alike. That’s exactly what I had in mind. At least after work I’d have hot food and soup waiting. And she’s bored staying alone in the village."
Cheng Su chuckled softly, thinking that Third Uncle was actually pretty good—he hasn’t forgotten his wife after making money and gone off to keep some little Fox Spirit in the city.
She looked at her parents’ faces beaming with joy and felt utterly at ease. From now on, the family would finally all be together.
