Chapter 690: A Moment of Reprieve
Chapter 690: A Moment of Reprieve
"There they are!"
"Stop them! Don’t let him escape!"
A group of zombies rushed up the overturned building, sprinting at full speed while firing potshots at the fleeing pair.
Nikita’s bike rumbled beneath them before rocketing toward the narrow pathway, its tyres screeching as she swerved around broken pillars and chunks of debris littering the surface of the collapsed high-rise.
"Woo!"
Her exhilarated cry crackled through the speakers.
She pushed her hips back slightly before leaning forward, twisting the throttle harder.
The bike shot ahead.
Nikolai wrapped his left arm around her waist while gripping a Desert Eagle in his right hand. The instant they accelerated, his heart kicked violently in his chest. Bullets whistled past them, slamming into stone and spraying fragments into the air.
’This date is amazing.’
A grin spread across his face without him even realising it.
There was no fear of death.
He trusted her completely to carry them through the chaos as the motorcycle tore across the ruins of the fallen skyscraper, Nosferatu zombies roaring behind them while the stars glistened above.
The safehouse wasn’t far away. They only needed to cross the massive sunken canyon ahead, using the fallen building as a bridge to reach the other side.
Wind roared past them as Nikita accelerated harder, the motorcycle bouncing over fractured concrete and exposed steel beams. Far below, darkness swallowed the canyon’s depths, littered with the twisted skeletons of vehicles and collapsed streets.
Another burst of gunfire erupted behind them.
Bullets sparked against the rubble near the bike, one ricocheting off a bent support pillar with a sharp metallic shriek.
"Tsk. Persistent bastards."
Nikita laughed instead of slowing down.
She yanked the handlebars sideways, drifting around a collapsed chunk of ceiling before straightening out toward the narrowest section of the fallen tower.
The path ahead couldn’t have been wider than a single lane.
One mistake and they would plunge straight into the abyss below.
Nikolai tightened his grip around her waist, his coat snapping violently in the wind as he twisted his upper body backwards.
The pursuing zombies were gaining.
Unlike the shambling corpses from old movies, these things moved with horrifying coordination. Their mutated muscles bulged unnaturally beneath torn skin as they sprinted over debris while continuing to fire.
One leapt across a gap in the broken structure.
Nikolai calmly raised the Desert Eagle.
Bang!
The zombie’s head exploded midair, its body tumbling into the canyon beneath them.
Another climbed onto the hood of their car and aimed directly at Nikita.
Bang! Bang!
Its chest burst apart from the heavy-calibre rounds, sending it crashing backwards into the horde behind it.
"Hehe~ Nice shot."
Nikita’s teasing voice purred through the speaker.
Then her tone sharpened.
"Hold tight."
Before Nikolai could respond, the motorcycle launched off a broken section of the building.
For a split second, they were airborne.
The canyon spread beneath them like the mouth of some colossal beast. Rusted wreckage and ruined streets disappeared into darkness far below as the bike soared across the gap.
Nikolai’s pulse spiked.
Then they slammed down onto the solid concrete.
The suspension shrieked from the impact, but Nikita maintained control perfectly, the motorcycle skidding sideways as her perky ass bounced slightly before stabilising.
Behind them, several zombies attempted the same jump.
However, their cars and the combined weight seemed too much.
Most of them descended into the basin below.
Their screams echoed through the canyon as their bodies vanished into the depths.
The motorcycle tore away from the collapsed high-rise, leaving the screams of falling zombies to fade into the depths of the canyon behind them.
Cold wind whipped against Nikolai’s face as the ruined skyline gradually gave way to the outskirts of the city. Burned apartment blocks thinned into abandoned industrial zones, then into long stretches of cracked highways swallowed by weeds and creeping forest growth.
Nikita finally eased off the throttle.
The engine’s furious howl dropped into a steady rumble as they sped along the fractured road beneath the crimson evening sky.
"We fucking lost them!" Nikita said smugly through the speakers.
"Yeah, thanks to my lovely wife’s riding."
"Ehehe~ I’ll let you have a taste tonight, baby."
Nikolai glanced behind them anyway.
He wanted to make sure, or maybe a little embarrassed at how forward and excited he felt hearing Nikita teasing him constantly as her plump ass continued to squish and bounce against the bike between his legs.
Only smoke rose from the dead district in the distance.
His tense muscles slowly relaxed.
Ahead, the landscape shifted into dense woodland stretching across the south-western region beyond the urban ruins. Massive pine trees towered over the broken roads, their branches swaying violently in the wind while fog coiled between the trunks like pale snakes.
If they took the right road, it would lead to the small seaside village where Selene and Lunaria conceived their children.
But they remained on the left-most turn.
Hidden somewhere inside that forest was the Volkov Bunker.
One of the last emergency strongholds built during the last monster war.
Most people would have no idea these mountains were different. The fact that a single clan of werewolves could construct something within a country and keep it hidden for almost half a century was quite the achievement.
Nikolai could only thank his lineage.
His father informed him of the countless safe zones and strongholds when he became the patriarch, and it outright shocked him.
He couldn’t help but mutter, "If the world collapsed... I could probably find any mountain and be safe for a lifetime."
"What was that, Babe? I didn’t hear you?"
"Nothing, Honey."
The bike veered off the highway and onto a narrow dirt trail hidden behind overgrown vegetation. Branches scraped against the sides as Nikita guided them deeper into the forest, slowing to a crawl.
The further they travelled, the quieter the world became.
Even the birds and insects seemed to vanish as the light of mankind faded, leaving them in pitch black, apart from the motorcycle lamp and their dark vision.
Only the low growl of the motorcycle engine echoed through the endless sea of trees.
Nikolai’s eyes narrowed.
"It feels like some kind of horror movie." Nikita suddenly said.
"Yeah, do you think the birds can sense the electrical activity inside?"
"Mmm, who knows?"
Nikita tilted her head, seemingly uninterested.
A heavy, yet peaceful feeling settled over the area.
After another fifteen minutes, the trees finally began to thin.
A colossal mountain wall emerged ahead, its dark stone face stretching upward like a natural fortress. Water trickled from cracks near the top, forming narrow streams that vanished into the rocks below.
Nikita slowed the bike.
"We’re here?"
"Yeah, I think so."
Nikolai hopped off the bike, boots crushing the damp gravel as he approached the cliffside. At first glance, it looked completely natural, with nothing out of order.
Then he noticed something a little strange, a faint geometric seam hidden behind some vines and between the stones.
Almost invisible unless viewed from the right angle.
His heartbeat quickened.
He reached into his coat and then pulled out his Volkov master keycard.
The moment he brought it close to the rock wall, a slow mechanical hum resonated from the depths of the mountain.
Dust and loose pebbles trembled around their feet.
Nikita popped the bike’s kickstand and hopped off, her steps light as she skipped across to Nikolai. Uninterested in the changes, she wrapped around his body and rubbed against him while she hugged his chest.
Then the cliff itself began to move.
Massive sections of stone split apart with a deafening grind, revealing thick steel doors concealed within the mountain wall. Old hydraulic systems groaned to life as rows of dim red lights flickered on inside the opening passage.
A blast of freezing air escaped from the darkness beyond.
Then brilliant white lights snapped on, one at a time, leading inside.
"Damn, this is so cool!" Nikita, finally taking notice, squeezed his hand.
"It’s like Citizen Evil..."
The Volkov bunker that his father mentioned was real.
The massive bunker doors sealed shut behind them with a thunderous clang, locking away the constant annoyances of the outside world.
Dim amber lights flickered awake overhead as Nikolai and Nikita stepped deeper into the underground corridor.
Unlike the cold, military facility he expected, polished wooden panels lined the walls, alongside brass fixtures and cream-coloured marble flooring. Soft jazz crackled faintly from hidden speakers somewhere deeper inside the bunker.
Nikita whistled.
"Well... this is way fancier than I expected."
"Yeah, it reminds me of my dad a little... his taste and style."
"Pfffft! Mine too, hahaha."
The corridor opened into a lavish lounge styled like something from the 1940s.
Dark oak shelves stretched along the walls, beside leather armchairs and a crackling electric fireplace that mimics real flames. Crystal decanters filled with whiskey and brandy rested atop a polished drinks cabinet alongside expensive modern liquor bottles that somehow remained chilled.
A stocked kitchen occupied the opposite side of the room.
"Wait, these things are recent!" Nikta bounced up and down while touching the devices. "My Mom wanted these a few months ago... she even made a plea to the old bastards who control our savings!"
The refrigerators hummed softly, packed with sealed meat, vegetables, bottled water, energy drinks, and frozen meals preserved inside industrial freezers.
Nikolai exhaled slowly.
"This is a blessing, I’m so tired right now."
He found the power and modern amenities refreshing, suggesting that people from Volkov likely visited this place every week.
’Maybe to restock and check the appliances?’
"I wonder who maintains this place. My dad would love a secret base like this." Nikita said while squatting in front of the freezer.
"I bet he would..."
Nikita’s gaze drifted toward the adjoining resting area.
A massive king-sized bed sat atop a raised platform beneath warm, golden lighting. Fresh white sheets covered the mattress without a single wrinkle, as though someone had prepared it only hours ago.
"Oh my! They even prepared fresh bedding for us."
She then skipped from the kitchen to the bedroom, only to pick up a large box labelled Magnum XL.
"Mm, what’s this?" She tilted her head.
Meanwhile, Nikolai remained in the office.
He sat on the comfy chair and listened to her voice as he sent an encoded message to the Mansion via the laptop, a brand new model released four months ago.
"This is less of a bunker... and more like some kind of hidden sanctuary."
"Heheheh, hey Nikolai, look!"
"Hm?"
He turned to find Nikita standing in the doorway, holding a condom and playing with it all while grinning brightly.
She lifted her eyes, glaring at him with fierce eyes.
"Shall we try using this?"
