“You’re right, Wyatt,” Anna said, a mischievous spark appearing in her eyes. She met my gaze, then Jill’s, before deliberately looking toward Susan. “Appearance is only the appeal. What really counts is being compatible in heart, mind, and body.”

Susan’s brow furrowed. Jill immediately caught on and joined in, a teasing smile appearing on her lips, “Yes. Being compatible in heart, mind, and body is what truly counts.”

“Really? I feel like I’ve been dragged back into high school,” Susan remarked, rolling her eyes at the other two.

She knew exactly what they were doing. They were indirectly teasing her about still being a virgin, not being fully intimate with their fiance, using the excuse that she was saving herself for the person she loved and intended to wait until marriage.

“Don’t come crying to me when our wedding night turns out to be more memorable and joyous than yours,” Susan retorted, refusing to let them have the last word.

“We’ll see just how memorable and joyous it’s going to be.” Anna’s mischievous smile widened, glancing at her with complete confidence. “We’ll be right there with you two. And trust me, I’ll do things to him that your virgin ass hasn’t even heard of.”

Susan’s face immediately reddened. Jill, however, froze at one particular word.

“We’re?” Her voice came out quieter than she intended.

She knew they would eventually marry their fiance together. That much had already been decided. But the thought that their wedding night would also be something they shared together suddenly made the reality of it hit her all at once.

Her cheeks turned bright red. For once, the normally shameless researcher had absolutely nothing clever to say.

“Yeah, I finally have one good reason to marry you three,” I joked with a chuckle, trying to lighten the mood. They ignored me completely.

Anna turned toward Susan with a smug little smile, “Don’t tell me you were under the impression that you were going to marry him first.”

Susan rolled her eyes exasperatedly. She knew exactly what Anna was doing. After their earlier argument, Anna was clearly looking for an opportunity to get one over on her and humiliate her in front of the others. She wasn’t about to give her the satisfaction, “You bet. I met him first. I have every right to marry him first.”

“Oh? If you want to play it that way, then I confessed first, kissed him first, slept with him before you, and proposed to him first.” Anna’s smile widened. She began counting the points off on her fingers, her smugness growing with every one. “So, according to your logic, I should be the one marrying him first.”

I stared at her. Technically, her argument wasn’t exactly airtight.

What had started between us as something messy and, at times, bordering on outright harassment had gradually transformed into something neither of us had expected. Or at least, I hadn’t expected. Somewhere along the way, the hostility and games had given way to genuine affection, trust, and the strong relationship we shared now.

Before Anna could declare victory, Jill hesitantly raised a hand. “Um… I hate to get involved in whatever this is…”

Both women looked at her. Jill shifted uncomfortably under their attention before continuing.

“But Wyatt and I were each other’s firsts,” She paused, her cheeks turning slightly red. “We almost had a baby together.”

That reveal brought an immediate silence. Jill quickly waved her hands, trying to prevent the conversation from becoming even more awkward.

“But I’m fine with us marrying together. That’s what we originally proposed to him anyway.” She glanced between Anna and Susan. “So I don’t really care who technically gets there first.”

Her voice became quieter. She played the villain so Anna and Susan didn’t lose sight of the goal post. For a moment, none of them spoke.

I couldn’t help but smile. Their rivalry was ridiculous. But beneath all the bickering, jealousy, and attempts to one-up each other was something I had come to understand very well. None of them actually wanted to win at the expense of the others. They wanted reassurance that they belonged beside me just as much as the other two did.

Susan and Anna exchanged a long look. The frustration in Anna’s expression finally boiled over, and she was the first to speak, “We agreed to present a united front in front of Wyatt. You swore!”

“Hey, I was just doing my job.” Susan raised an eyebrow. She didn’t sound remotely apologetic. She folded her arms and continued, “I’ve seen Wyatt pull all-nighters and produce thousands of cards for auctions and online sales. So I did what any good manager with a little foresight would do. It’s not my fault I’m good at my job.”

Then she tilted her head toward Jill, adding, “Besides, Jill broke that promise too. Why aren’t you angry with her?”

Jill immediately looked at Anna. She was wondering the exact same thing. Anna opened her mouth, clearly ready to fire back, but the words died before they left her lips.

Her gaze shifted away. That hesitation told Susan everything she needed to know. Susan’s expression hardened.

“Let me tell you why.” She leaned forward slightly, her voice quieter but far more cutting. “Because you see Jill as your equal. But you still see me as your subject.”

“Somewhere in the back of your mind, you still think of me as someone beneath you. You probably imagined that even if I married Wyatt alongside you, I’d become your obedient little maid, standing behind you and doing whatever you told me.” She gave Anna a humorless smile. “That’s why Jill breaking the agreement is a mistake. But me breaking it? That’s insubordination.”

The silence that followed was considerably heavier than the argument that had preceded it. Knowing that Susan had completely misunderstood her, Anna no longer hesitated.
