Chapter 859: The Baron’s Talk [GT Ranking Bonus Chapter]
At the Luxury Viewing Box occupied by Baron Whale, Baron Canestane, and Baron Rivelle, the three of them sat in surprise as they discussed among themselves. Their wives and children were also present, each of them equally astonished.
As for why they were surprised, well, the answer was simple; Finch.
Every single one of them had thought that Finch would be eliminated this round. They weren’t looking down on him; it was simply the most logical conclusion. Even Finch’s parents had believed the same, after all, they knew exactly how strong their own son was. Only Rachael had remained innocent enough to believe in her brother without the slightest doubt.
They had watched him barely keep up with a Rank 5 Shadow Assassin. No, “keep up” was being generous. He had been completely dominated throughout the battle, only for him to suddenly pull out a summoning ability from nowhere at the very end and proceed to dominate the entire second round.
“Baron Whale, I thought your son only awakened the Soul-Bound Chain as his ability. Why am I suddenly seeing him display both a summoning ability and a shapeshifting ability?” Baron Canestane asked, feeling slightly betrayed.
Their families had been friends for many years. Of course, that didn’t mean they had to share every personal secret with one another, but at the very least, he felt he should’ve been informed about a second ability, even if the third one had remained a secret. He certainly would’ve done that much had he been Finch’s father.
Baron Whale shook his head before replying, “Please don’t jump to conclusions, Baron Canestane. I’m just as surprised as you are at this very moment,” he sighed before continuing. “If my son possessed such abilities, then believe me, I would’ve been boasting about him long ago.” He paused briefly before adding, “Besides, you know I allowed my son to be lazy and do whatever he wanted. If I had known he possessed such abilities, do you honestly think I would’ve allowed him to laze around doing nothing all these years?” he explained.
Baron Canestane remained silent for a moment as he recognized the truth in Baron Whale’s words. In the end, he could only conclude that Finch had deliberately kept all of this hidden from everyone for years.
Baron Rivelle, who was seated beside them, turned toward William and asked, “Did Finch tell you about his multiple abilities?”
Although he had joined their circle of friends later than the others, he knew that the children of the other two Barons had practically grown up together as best friends.
William already knew that the Goblin was actually Lior in disguise. After all, Finch had practically called out his name during the battle. He also knew everyone had misunderstood the situation, so he could only play along unless Finch later decided to reveal the truth himself.
“Yes, Finch told me about his second and third abilities,” William answered, although he personally hadn’t known Finch could shapeshift as well.
“Sigh… it seems my son trusts another man’s son more than his own father,” Baron Whale muttered as he shook his head.
“But still… three abilities. That’s extraordinarily rare. Most people are only familiar with individuals possessing two abilities, like the Emperor and the former Emperor,” Baron Rivelle remarked with an impressed whistle.
“I wonder if he’s hiding a fourth one,” Baron Canestane added with a smile tugging at the corners of his lips.
Baron Whale turned to look at him before shaking his head. “Now you’re just going overboard,” he replied dismissively.
Although he wasn’t particularly happy that Finch had hidden such abilities from him, he was still an immensely proud father nonetheless. His son had reached the finals of the Inter-Empire Competition, becoming the first person in their bloodline to accomplish such a feat. How could he possibly remain angry at a time like this?
Besides, he was certain that when he eventually asked Finch to explain everything, his son would have a very good reason for keeping it secret. More importantly, aside from all of that, their family now possessed the support of a Rank 6 powerhouse capable of participating in the yearly Monster Tide. That alone would greatly reduce the amount of death and bloodshed.
Everything was a win.
“It seems we can safely bet on Finch to defeat anyone around Rank 6 or Rank 7 and below from now on,” Baron Rivelle said with a smirk.
Unlike Asher’s odds, which had become almost impossible to profit from, they could still make a considerable fortune by betting on Finch’s victories.
“Indeed. It seems we’re destined to become extremely rich through this Inter-Empire Competition,” Baron Canestane stated with a wide grin.
William sat at the side, feeling somewhat frustrated. He had originally planned to stake his ten thousand Platinum Coins on Asher, but after seeing the miserable 0.1 odds, he could only abandon the idea. Even Finch had entrusted him with another ten thousand Platinum Coins to place on Asher.
But alas, only those who had taken advantage of Asher’s generous odds much earlier, people like Azaron, were destined to make any meaningful money from betting on Asher.
“Hey, William, did Finch tell you what Flag he possesses? If we know that, we can increase the amount we planned to bet on him,” Baron Rivelle asked as his eyes shifted toward William.
William simply shook his head before replying, “I asked him about it, but he refused to say anything. He doesn’t want information leaking to anyone. Still, the mere fact that he possesses a Flag should already be enough reason to increase our stakes, don’t you think?” he said calmly.
Baron Whale nodded as he remained seated, “it seems we’ll just have to wait for the odds to appear before each match, then place our bets immediately before the odds decrease,” he stated.
‘I wonder how far Finch can go,’ William wondered with a faint smile. Finch was his best friend. Why wouldn’t he be happy for the guy?
‘If only he’d change his name to Fatty Wang,’ he mused to himself as he shook his head.
‘I wonder if I can visit the special recovery location one of the commentators mentioned,’ he thought to himself.
However, after giving it some thought, he abandoned the idea. He knew Asher well enough. Since he had been given ten hours to rest, William was almost certain the guy had already fallen asleep wherever he was, especially since he didn’t have his phone with him.
William sighed and leaned back into his seat as he quietly waited for Asher to show all these so-called geniuses how things were truly done. He wanted to witness their reactions, their amazement, and their utter shock. He wanted them to experience exactly what he had experienced over the past year while living alongside the monster known as Asher Wargrave.
And with that, the hours quietly slipped away, the ten-hour break passing by in the blink of an eye as the third and final round swiftly arrived.
