Chapter 595 The Captain Princess’s Melancholy
Chapter 595 The Captain Princess’s Melancholy
Edited by: Kanaa-senpai
At the southernmost port town of Teremoro, many ships are docked. The largest ship bears the Zia family crest, and the crew is unloading cargo from it. A woman watches this scene from the highest point of the ship.
Coral Zia. The second princess, known as the “Captain Princess,” has light sky-blue hair that flows with the wind, not caring about its disarray, as she shifts her gaze from the crew to the sea.
Wearing a top with a large white and navy collar, shorts that look like a mini skirt, and a big hat that signifies her as captain, her worried expression, combined with her delicate royal appearance, stirs a protective instinct in everyone who sees her.
However, the crew members who know her well continue their work without paying her much mind. In fact, they seem to think that getting too close would only lead to trouble, so they focus on their tasks.
Amidst this, a female knight stands on the shore where a post has been driven in to secure the ship and calls out to Coral.
”Princess! We’re all set!”
But Coral remains still, her eyes fixed on the sea. Even though she has responsibilities, she is reluctant to leave the ocean, wanting to imprint the view in her memory for as long as possible.
The day before, she had read a letter from the king that arrived from the royal capital, realizing her own mistakes.
When Coral was young, she was captivated by the sea she first saw during a family trip to the royal territory for summer vacation. She remembers how much fun she had on the first ship she rode, how delicious the fresh fish was, and how she loved the town that had both a peaceful and lively atmosphere, making her want to claim Teremoro as her own.
To do that, first, she gave up her claim to the throne. Royal family members who lose their right to inherit──especially princesses──often marry into other families, so she made sure not to show her strong attachment to the sea. She worked hard to become a specialist in marine affairs so that the Zia family wouldn’t get rid of her. At the same time, she planned a strategy to eliminate any voices wanting to marry her by behaving in a way that was not princess-like.
Of course, the king (Yuuri) understood Coral’s intentions. He briefly considered forcibly pulling her away from the ‘sea,’ but her decision to give up her royal claim and work for the royal family included elements that would reduce the potential for future royal succession disputes, which was also desirable for Yuri.
As a king, he thought that competition for the best to become king was unavoidable, but as a father, he wanted his children to get along. With that thought in mind, he decided to turn a blind eye.
As a result, it was decided that Coral would govern the royal territory, including Teremoro, as a future royal sister. However, the condition set by the king (her father) that she must ‘carry the royal blood’ was a headache for her.
After all, the name ‘Captain Princess’ had spread among the nobility. It was clear that Coral was far from the ideal lady that noble men desired. Because of this, among the men of suitable status to be the princess’s partner, those who were interested in marrying into the family were only drawn by the benefits of the royal territory.
Coral consulted with the king (her father) and chose the third son of the most historically significant family as her fiancé. This was a political marriage that benefited both families, but she had no complaints at all. The discussions with her fiancé, Roz, went exactly as Coral wished.
Coral’s permanent stay at ‘Teremoro’, Roz becoming the lord’s deputy in ‘Sloste’, and the engagement meetings happening once a month. These were all promised in exchange for favoring his family within the lord deputy’s discretion.
At first, it seemed too convenient for Coral, and she was suspicious, keeping a close watch on him. But after confirming Roz’s honest work, she now mostly leaves things to him. If it weren’t for the issue with the Dragonmen’s village mentioned in the letter from the king (father), she would have been living the life she desired.
(Depending on the outcome, this might be the last time. …I should engrave this in my memory. The sea I loved…)
It was the first time since the Dragonmen’s village became part of the kingdom that such a situation occurred. Even though she lamented her misfortune of being involved, Coral had no intention of escaping the responsibilities of her position as a princess.
”Captain~! Captain Coral~!”
”…Phew. I’m coming now!”
Coral stood up and jumped from the edge of the ship towards the shore. It was a high place, and if she failed to land, it wouldn’t end well. Yet, without hesitation, she leaped despite the distance that would be impossible for an ordinary person.
Her skirt fluttered as she jumped in a graceful arc, as if walking in the air, thanks to her magic. The crew looked up at the princess captain, who used wind magic to propel the ship forward, predict the weather during the voyage, and protect the ship from sea monsters. When she landed, the crew who had unloaded the cargo from the ship showed her today’s catch.
”Captain! We have your favorite sea bream, but are you coming back today?!”
”Sorry! I can’t go back for a while! Just keep doing things as usual without me!”
”Understood! Leave the fishing boats and the town’s peace to us! Please come back as soon as you can!”
”Hey, you guys! I’m counting on you~!!”
””Captain~!!””
Her subordinates were well-prepared, and even if Coral couldn’t return, it wouldn’t have a big negative impact on ‘Teremoro’. She waved back with a big smile at her beloved comrades who shouted with their deep voices, but when she turned to face the female knight, her expression became serious.
”Princess, are you really going in that outfit?”
”…As mentioned in the letter, we should be heading to the Dragonmen’s village. It’s better to wear something easier to move in than a dress. We don’t know what might happen on the journey.”
The female knight could only smile wryly as Coral lightly tapped the hilt of her curved sword, which was sheathed.
”It’s our job to protect you, Princess.”
”I’m counting on you. …Let’s go fulfill our duty.”
”Yes! This way, please. The carriage is ready.”
They had to prepare to welcome Ichiro, the Dragonman, and his helper, Shinji, at ‘Sloste’ before they arrived. Although Coral, being of royal blood, had a higher status, she had already failed once. It was best for her to have them work comfortably to resolve the situation. She had the flexibility to bow her head for practical reasons.
Thus, in a hurry, Coral left ‘Teremoro’ and arrived at ‘Sloste’ much earlier than Shinji and the others. After discussing with her fiancé, Roz, about the blunder, they concluded that they should use all the resources of the royal territory and that the Dragonmen should receive the goddess’s granted life assistance. Finally, they were set to meet with Shinji and the others.
In contrast to Tsubaki, Coral-san is an active princess.
She can use a curved sword and wind magic.
