Chapter 2592: The Military’s Purpose
Chapter 2592: The Military’s Purpose
Shortly after being brought to their new living quarters, Yuan and Mei Xiaoyun said goodbye to each other before entering their new home.
Since there was nothing to do, they rested for the rest of the day.
The following day, Yuan and Mei Xiaoyun were led to the classroom, where all the new soldiers would spend the next several days learning about the military’s purpose.
"You know that monster who fought with a Captain during the recruitment? I heard that he received a special promotion to the rank of Corporal for his performance."
"Imagine starting out one right below an elite soldier... how envious."
"Not just that, but he doesn’t even have to participate in the training that we all must."
"Did you not see how he performed during the recruitment? A prodigy like that doesn’t need training and deserves whatever special treatment they throw at him!"
The soldiers in the room had been discussing Yuan long before he arrived. The moment he entered, however, their conversations ceased as they stared at him in silence, their gazes filled with awe and, in some cases, envy.
Yet despite their curiosity and desire to approach him, no one dared to do so, mainly because of the two elite soldiers standing nearby and Mei Xiaoyun’s presence.
"So that’s the General’s daughter... I wonder what their relationship is."
"I was told that it was her mother who found and recruited him."
"And who gave you that information?"
"My father... who is also a Captain."
Some time later, the class instructor entered the room and introduced himself, "I am Sergeant Mu, and I will be your instructor for the next several days."
’Xi Murong...’ Yuan thought to himself as he recognized the instructor’s face.
By now, he’d met pretty much everyone in the Demon Sealing Faction with one exception.
"Before we talk about the military’s purpose and your responsibilities as a soldier, let’s talk about the history of the military."
"The military was created 2,000 years ago by a certain individual."
Yuan raised an eyebrow when he heard this information.
’Huh? The military is only 2,000 years old? That can’t be right...’
After all, it seemed too young for such an advanced civilization.
"Does anyone know who created the military?" Sergeant Mu proceeded to question them.
Immediately, half of the room raised their hands.
When one of them was called upon, they answered, "Gaia!"
"???"
Yuan turned around to look at the one who’d just spoken with widen eyes.
’Gaia created the military?!’ he cried inwardly.
Yuan almost didn’t believe his ears. He could’ve never anticipated that, besides the system, Gaia would also be responsible for the creation of the military.
"Correct. Gaia created not only the system that shaped our society today, but also the military," Sergeant Mu said.
"Now then... who is Gaia?"
Yuan’s ears immediately perked at this question, as he’d been wondering about Gaia’s identity ever since he learned of their existence.
Fewer people raised their hands this time, but there were still quite a few who knew the answer, which was much more than Yuan anticipated.
’I thought information on Gaia was top secret...’ he sighed inwardly.
Unbeknownst to him, the people with their hands raised were already connected to the military one way or another before they joined, so they possessed information that ordinary civilians did not.
"You."
Sergeant Mu pointed at one of the soldiers at random.
"Gaia is the Prophet!" the soldier said in full confidence of their answer.
"..."
’A Prophet...?’ Yuan rubbed his eyes, immediately recalling how the first Celestial Emperor used the same tactics to take control of the world.
"Indeed, Gaia is known as the Prophet." Sergeant Mu confirmed.
No longer able to remain silent, Yuan raised his hand and said, "I have a question."
"You are..." Sergeant Mu narrowed his eyes at Yuan.
"Corporal Yuan, correct? I’ve heard a lot about you. I usually don’t accept questions until the next, but go ahead."
"What does it mean to be the Prophet? Does Gaia speak with ’God’ and relay their message to us?" he asked.
"God?" Sergeant Mu raised his eyebrows, looking entertained by Yuan’s question.
"What is a God?"
Rather than Sergeant Mu, someone else in the room asked aloud.
’Does the concept of God not exist in this world or something?’ Yuan wondered to himself.
Sergeant Mu then said, "I don’t know what you mean by ’God’, but as the Prophet, Gaia has the ability to speak to the universe."
"The universe...? Can you elaborate?" Yuan asked, looking puzzled by the response.
"Unfortunately, I cannot." Sergeant Mu shook his head.
"There are many things that even I’m not privy to. If you wish to learn more, you’ll have to climb the ranks and earn the necessary credentials."
"Anyway, let’s move on to the next subject—the purpose of the military."
After taking a deep breath, Sergeant Mu spoke with a solemn expression. "I’m sure some of you are already aware of this, but the military’s purpose is to protect this world and its inhabitants. In other words, us."
The soldiers immediately began mumbling to each other, and it didn’t take long before someone remarked out loud, "But that implies our world is in danger..."
"It’s not an implication. Our world is not safe. We are not safe."
"What is threatening us?" someone quickly asked.
"Instead of just telling you, I want all of you to experience it yourself in the near future," said Sergeant Mu.
"With that being said, we’re not in imminent danger. In fact, it might not even happen in our lifetime."
Yuan raised his eyebrows at Sergeant Mu’s words, which implied the military was preparing for something in the distant future.
"Now then, let’s go over the military structure, starting with the ranks," Sergeant Mu continued calmly, as if he hadn’t just dropped a massive bomb on everyone.
"From lowest to highest, the standard ranks begin with Private, which is where everyone here starts—with the exception of Corporal Yuan. After that come Private First Class, Corporal, and finally Sergeant, the highest standard rank."
