Chapter 700: Chapter 67: News of Death (Fan Ticket Third Watch)
Three days have passed, Xiao Xian and Zhou Ziang have already holed up in the snow-covered cabin in the mountains for three days without any sign of Master Lin.
The deaf and mute little girl doesn’t seem to mind too much, as if she’s accustomed to this way of life. She only eats two meals a day, both of which are potato and bean soup.
Maybe because she realized Zhou Ziang cooks better and Xiao Xian is more adept at chopping firewood, the little girl smoothly delegated tasks to them.
"This won’t do," Xiao Xian pretended to help peel potatoes, muttering next to Zhou Ziang. Xiao Xian had recently noticed that although the girl is mute and deaf, she’s quite good at observing others’ expressions. A few days earlier, when she was discussing something in front of Zhou Ziang,
she watched intently with a thoughtful look in her eyes.
Zhou Ziang mentioned that in the northeast near North Korea, many North Korean civilians unable to withstand hunger and cold have escaped to China in previous years, marrying mountain villagers living there. The lucky ones made it across, but the unlucky ones got shot by the military at the border.
Listening to Zhou Ziang, Xiao Xian pondered whether the little girl could be living alone in the cabin, her gaze toward the girl carrying a touch of pity.
However, Xiao Xian was also somewhat cautious when she spoke, considering that a small cabin was home to a little girl and a dog, with no adult supervision, a rather problematic combination.
"Could this child be an orphan? Living on the north side of the mountain, she’s likely part of the Korean ethnic group. There are adult items in the house," Xiao Xian had noticed that although the house was rudimentary, the utensils were for two people. Take the bowls, for example; there were pairs of different sizes and a few for guests, which meant the house wasn’t completely isolated from the world; at least some visitors came by.
Zhou Ziang had a professor at Cornell who was a North Korean political refugee in the United States, and he used to share little-known stories about North Korea after class. The professor said that in North Korea, rations are still politically distributed, and it’s better in the Capital where the government takes care of basic survival needs.
The poorer people are, the more likely they are to commit crimes. And despite the relatively good relationship between China and North Korea, there were major issues when the border was initially drawn. It was only through the iron relationship between the older generation of leaders, united by their belief in communism, that they managed to divide Changbai Mountain in half.
"It’s just a mountain, isn’t it?" Xiao Xian didn’t think much of it, to her, the Changbai Mountain buried under the white snow didn’t seem to hold as much importance as Black Mountain and Lei Gong Mountain.
"A mountain may seem trivial, but the mountains in the northeast are pristine, and their environment is not comparable to other parts of China. Take this mountain, for example; the southern and northern regions differ greatly. Have you noticed that the snow on the north side of the mountain is thinner than on the south?" Zhou Ziang and Xiao Xian had used the Inch Land Skill to get here, landing on the southern side of the mountain.
According to the normal distribution in nature, the snow melts faster on the sunnier southern slope, while the snow accumulates more on the shadier northern slope. Yet, the situation in this part of the mountain is the exact opposite, which is unusual.
"How about we just go out and look for him?" Xiao Xian couldn’t wait any longer and took out an ice blade fragment, flipping it over in her hand. As soon as she took out the fragment,
the white-furred dog that had been lazily lying next to the stove stood up looking confusedly at Xiao Xian and the others.
"Don’t put it away yet," Zhou Ziang stopped Xiao Xian, took the ice blade fragment from her hand, and placed it in front of the white-furred dog, Mao Da.
The big dog’s eyes filled with even more confusion, and its shiny black nose huffed out a few wet breaths.
The little girl also noticed the dog’s unusual behavior and walked over, grabbing hold of its thick fur.
Mao Da sniffed Zhou Ziang’s hand, sensing something was off, and then lay back down.
"It seems to know something," Xiao Xian and Zhou Ziang both realized that this northern slope of the mountains is the obligatory path to enter deeper into Changbai Mountain. If Mei Nian was going into the mountain, she would definitely have passed by this cabin.
Xiao Xian regretted not bringing a photo of Mei Nian when they left, as provided by Huang Yaoshi or Yu Gangyao. If they had a picture, they could ask the Korean girl without the barrier of language, inquiring whether Mei Nian had passed by this cabin.
Zhou Ziang stared at the big dog that had once again squinted its eyes, and suddenly, his body emanated a rich aura of Gold Grade Space. The little girl didn’t show much reaction, but the white-furred dog on the ground reacted again. This time, it ran over to Zhou Ziang’s side and bit his hand.
