Chapter 830: Collisions Between Exchange Students
The group of four from the Huake Institute, along with Qu Yang who joined halfway, landed in New York by the next morning.
At New York Airport, Qu Yang parted ways with Xiao Xian and the others. His study school was a community college in Washington. After leaving his contact email, he took the airport bus to Washington.
"Hello, are you the exchange student delegation from the Huake Institute? I am Michael, one of the organizers of this exchange program, the Deputy Minister of the Administrative Planning Department of Mengshan Company," said the head of Mengshan Company, who had driven to the airport early in the morning and had already been waiting for two hours, as the electronic clock in the airport lobby had just moved past five in the morning.
Information related to Mengshan Company was mandatory for all exchange students to learn before departure to the United States, as required by the central computer.
So now, even Zhang Yiyi, who disliked memorizing information the most, had some initial impression of this well-known multinational biological company.
This deputy minister, who came to pick them up, however, was quite different from the impression of Mengshan’s strong global presence, appearing as an average middle-aged man you could see on any American street.
His hair was slightly balding, his belly was about the size of two Wang Shuai’s, and in his early morning haste, his shirt buttons were wrongly fastened, yet he wore a kind smile, a typical American style person.
"Mr. Michael, hello, I am Wang Shuai, one of the leaders from Huake Institute for this event. This is Juliet One, another leader accompanying us on this trip, and behind us are exchange students Ye Heng, Zhu Xiaoxian, and Zhang Yiyi." Wang Shuai introduced Juliet One without any surprise in the friendly American deputy minister’s demeanor.
However, seeing the exchange student team so young, he was somewhat surprised.
"If I remember correctly, Mr. Wang, you were also a member of the Chinese exchange student delegation last time. Welcome back to the United States. As for these three, they look unfamiliar. May I know what special skills each of you have?" Michael asked with a smile, though pondering inside. Despite having an innocent face, he was a sly old fox underneath.
Wang Shuai had dealt with him a few times, all of which were his recruitment attempts, which Wang Shuai refused outright. On meeting again, he showed no signs of discomfort.
Special skills, both Xiao Xian and Yiyi started wondering. Exchange students weren’t necessarily skilled students. It felt like the old days in Sacred Heart Middle School, where they were asked about special skills.
"My special skill is plant cultivation," Ye Heng, the eldest and the strongest among the three, naturally took the lead to state his area of expertise. Though he mentioned plant cultivation, it was just a front, leaving Michael and Mengshan Company to interpret its true meaning.
"My special skill is physical ability," Michael’s question stumped Yiyi, who really didn’t know what she was good at. After much thought, she realized she had some advantage in physical abilities.
"And what about this student?" With the other two answered, only Xiao Xian was left. The American escort looked at Xiao Xian eagerly.
Xiao Xian initially wanted to say planting, but since Ye Heng had already mentioned it, being impolite during the first meeting with the organizer could potentially affect the future evaluation.
"My special skill is rather niche, it’s handicrafts." Xiao Xian originally wanted to say weaving, but since she couldn’t reveal the specifics of weaving, she simply said it was crafts.
"Handicrafts? Chinese craftsmanship is quite famous. I have a friend who used to be an immigration visa officer and encountered an old Chinese lady who was good at paper cutting. I didn’t expect such a young student as Zhu to have such a hobby too." Apparently, Michael misunderstood Xiao Xian’s words.
But it didn’t matter; at least Wang Shuai and the others appeared normal.
"Please wait a moment. I have booked breakfast at the airport ahead of time and will take you over to rest for a while. In half an hour, another group of five exchange students from H country will arrive. Once everyone is here, I will arrange for all of you to travel together to Ithaca and stay in the exchange student apartments at the Biological Engineering College of Cornell University," Michael said, maintaining a cheerful smile despite hearing such a series of odd special skills. Seems like Michael, having handled many exchange students, had developed a certain adaptability to their skills.
