Chapter 1591: The Shield of the Mask
Chapter 1591: The Shield of the Mask
The mages trapped and spinning in the aerial chaos of the Underside could only stare in a mixture of pain and pure amazement. Though they were the enemy, even their skilled eyes were forced to acknowledge the genius unfolding below them.
As they suffered, they began to recognize the complexity of the magical formations that Raze had laid down. They were starting to understand the sheer brilliance of the runes. In a practical sense, the combination between different elements and the use of combination magic was notoriously tricky. Getting the power balance exactly right to perform something devastatingly amazing was difficult enough. This was true even when a mage was in complete control, able to instantaneously adjust and figure out how to perfectly balance the flow of mana in real-time.
But what they were currently witnessing was an entirely different level of mastery. The physical, grounded formations were executing that complex balancing act all by themselves. The spells being cast were creating the perfect combination magic, a deadly, flawless synergy of elements, and the results were proving to be extremely powerful and utterly relentless, there was no calculation that was wrong.
The Dark Guild, and Raze himself, had secured a massive abundance of crystals from looting the magical Academy. These were high-level, dense Beast Crystals that contained immense, raw power. When channeled through Raze’s masterful runes, the combination was deadly efficient. It was killing, maiming, and neutralizing enemy mages before a single one could even reach the ground.
In fact, not one of the invaders had managed to touch the dirt yet. They were entirely too busy fighting off the unending, large-scale barrage of spells that simply refused to stop.
A few of the less injured invaders, scorched and terrified, began to break away from the main torrent of spells, desperately trying to descend along the edges of the tunnel.
Seeing this, the mages of the Underside took action.
"Come on, we can’t just let the Dark Magus do all of the work! We have to protect this place ourselves!" someone shouted, galvanizing the local defenses.
The people of the Underside weren’t entirely sure if the incoming Cerberus Guild members would hurt them specifically or not. They were completely unaware that Gizin had given the chilling order for the complete annihilation of the Underside, but they knew one thing for certain: every previous visit they’d had from the people above had been a nightmare.
They knew their postion and even if they were just here to elimnate the Dark Guild they would get caught in the crossfire.
On top of the general fear, the local mages were profoundly thankful to Raze for giving them a new life, a new sense of hope. They wouldn’t let it be stolen away.
They quickly cast their own spells, aiming them at the strays and those who were hurt and not focused on defense. The sudden, unexpected attacks from below sealed the stragglers’ fate. They fell out from the sky and crashed right onto the hard stone floor below.
The automatic spells from Raze’s formations continued unabated, and still, not a single enemy mage had fallen into or touched the central ground. The defense was flawless.
"You see that!" Harvey screamed from outside the Church. The entire Dark Guild base was situated on a slightly raised section of the Underside, an old, solidified rubbish pit that served as a natural mountain. From this vantage point, they were able to see everything taking place in the distance.
Harvey thrust his fist into the air, his face alight with fanatic belief. "That is the power of our Dark Magus! We have nothing to fear, not even the Grand Magus himself!"
The Dark Mages erupted into cheers. Although they didn’t know if their own attacks would even reach, some of them immediately started to cast raw Dark Magic toward the distant entry points. They didn’t care about hitting anything specific; they just wanted to contribute to the unfolding, glorious battle.
"So many of their mages are dying," Safa commented, watching the bodies fall. "Are they not going to do anything? Are they just going to watch them all die and not intervene? Where is the Grand Magus in all this?"
This was exactly what Raze was thinking on his pillar. Although the crystals would soon run out of energy for the spells, he could easily supplement the formations with his own vast pool of mana, ensuring the attack continued.
The loss of this fodder was enormous. If all these troops were eliminated against the Dark Guild and everyone else down here, the remaining Cerberus Guild forces simply wouldn’t be enough to win. Even Gizin had to know that.
Just as Raze was beginning to think he might have to move to the surface to see what was going on, something started to happen.
The mages stopped pouring through five of the open entry points.
They had stopped. Instead, out of those five locations, a strange golden energy began to emit.
It appeared and rapidly expanded, coalescing almost instantly into a giant shield of shimmering, powerful light that spanned the width of the collapsed entrance. Despite Raze’s best-laid spells and the desperate attacks from the mages below, the golden shield was blocking it all, completely and totally neutralizing the magic.
Now, flooding behind the colossal golden shields, more mages began to descend. This group was far more organized and included members of the recognizable Cerberus Guild.
"What is that magic? Who is doing that? Is it Gizin himself?" Dame questioned, her voice cracking with sudden fear.
When Raze looked closely, focusing his power on the five entry points, he saw the truth. Out of all five points, the golden energy was being projected by the Masked Cerebus Guild members, the strongest, most dangerous operatives the Guild possessed.
This was no longer just an extermination of foot soldiers.
The real fight was finally about to begin.
