Chapter 18
Chapter 18
Shen Juan was ultimately punished to copy Ohm’s Law a thousand times.
Lin Yujing, on the other hand, had perfect homework for the entire week. She paid attention in class, aced the pop quizzes, and was always quiet, polite, and never spoke loudly. Because of her excellent behavior, Teacher Wang Konglong was half-convinced by her words already.
Such a good student would never have a reason to skip class!
No, there’s only one possibility: she was dragged out by her deskmate.
On the contrary, Shen Juan either slept in class or didn’t show up. Teacher Wang Konglong didn’t need to think twice, it had to be him.
Lin Yujing blinked, lowered her head, and said softly, pitifully, even willingly admitting her mistake: “But I did break the class rules and was late. Teacher Wang, don’t be angry after I finish my punishment.”
Liu Fujiang happened to come out of the office, glanced at the door, and was so moved by what he heard that he almost cried.
What a good child! Who said Class Ten students were hard to manage? With such a model student, Liu Fujiang believed that one day, the average score of Class Ten would no longer be the lowest in the grade.
Wang Konglong said, “Alright, then you don’t have to copy. Shen Juan, you copy it a thousand times.”
“…”
Shen Juan looked up, “?”
The indifferent gaze of the school bully had no effect on Wang Konglong, a teacher with layers of experience and courage. Wang Konglong had taught so many students and had
seen countless school bullies, including those who would directly curse at teachers in class. Compared to them, Shen Juan was relatively low-key. At least he copied multiple- choice questions for his homework.
“A thousand times. What are you staring at?” Wang Konglong tapped the side of the podium with a triangle ruler. “Learn from your deskmate. She scored full marks on the pop quiz last class, but where were you? I didn’t even see you. It’s been a week since the start of the term; how many times have I seen you? Do you even know what Ohm’s Law is? i equals u over r, copy! And the derived formulas too! Ask your deskmate if you don’t know! I don’t believe it; let’s see if you can forget it after copying it a thousand times!”
“…”
Shen Juan was speechless.
In the afternoon, Liu Fujiang called Lin Yujing to talk about the dormitory arrangement.
The affluent school, unlike others where dorms were packed to capacity, had several buildings for male and female dorms, and since most students were locals, there were plenty of empty rooms with only two students per dorm.
Lin Yujing arrived late, and since the girls in her class staying in the dorm were an even number, she got a room to herself. She checked it out during the break—a small but clean room with two beds, a desk, and a small private bathroom.
When she returned to the classroom, Shen Juan was copying Ohm’s Law, filling the page with i=u/r, u=ir, and r=u/i. He glanced at her as she entered but continued writing without pause.
Shen Juan’s English handwriting was elegant and unrestrained, suitable for tattoo designs, probably a popular choice. His handwriting couldn’t be ugly.
Lin Yujing felt guilty and embarrassed but preferred this to copying five hundred times herself.
She cleared her throat, took out a lollipop from her desk, and carefully placed it on Shen Juan’s notebook.
Thankful she had bought a bunch of these lollipops while coaxing Xu Ruyi, Shen Juan paused, glanced at the orange-wrapped candy, then at Lin Yujing, who was looking at him expectantly with hands on her lap.
He slowly unwrapped the candy, popped it into his mouth, and resumed writing.
Lin Yujing sighed in relief.
The lazy boy sat there, writing formulas with a lollipop in his mouth. His grip on the pen was slightly off, with his thumb pressing on his index finger, his knuckles slightly protruding and pale. After finishing each line, he would slightly raise his finger and make a flicking motion.
In the bright and bustling classroom, with a boy lazily writing and sucking on a lollipop, Lin Yujing saw a youthful charm in Shen Juan for the first time.
Clearing her throat, she leaned closer and said, “Shen, since you accepted my candy, does this mean you’ve forgiven me? Are we good?”
Shen Juan glanced at her, “This lousy thing,” he mumbled around the candy, “I copied five hundred times for you, and you give me a lollipop that’s been around for a week?”
Lin Yujing quickly raised her hand, “Three days’ breakfast.”
Shen Juan didn’t respond, continuing to write, crunching the hard candy.
Lin Yujing persisted, “Five days!”
Shen Juan tossed the empty lollipop stick into the trash can, “Deal.”
Lin Yujing didn’t mind because Shen Juan rarely attended morning classes anyway.
But he started showing up, consistently for a week.
For breakfast, Shen Juan showed up at 7:30 AM every day, often startling Li Lin, who was copying homework.
By Friday, Li Lin was on the verge of a breakdown but marveled at the sight of Shen Juan casually sitting against the wall, munching on sweet soy milk with two steaming buns on his desk.
Wang Konglong finally remembered his punishment for Shen Juan copying Ohm’s Law a thousand times, triggered by Shen Juan sleeping in class.
Shen Juan slept deeply, face to the wall, undisturbed by the teacher’s loud lectures. Unless called, he could sleep all morning.
Teachers had become accustomed to it, as long as he didn’t disrupt the class, except for Liu Fujiang’s persistent efforts.
Liu Fujiang, a veteran teacher and first-time homeroom teacher, believed he could nurture a class full of top students and wouldn’t give up on anyone. Whenever Shen Juan slept, Liu Fujiang would stand by his desk and softly coax, “Shen Juan, wake up.”
Only Liu Fujiang and Wang Konglong still tried to wake him. Wang Konglong’s fast- paced, explosive temper was the opposite of Liu Fujiang’s, complementing each other perfectly. You never knew when Wang Konglong might suddenly lose his temper.
“By the way, I reviewed your homework from yesterday,” said Wang Konglong, turning back suddenly while holding a piece of chalk. “I won’t say much about how your circuit diagrams look like crap. The monthly exam is coming up. If you draw like this during the exam, I’ll deduct all your points. Do you have rulers? If you don’t have one, bring one tomorrow. If you don’t have a ruler, come to me; I’ll buy one for you. Where was I? Parallel circuits—are those in which there are multiple, independent paths for current to flow—”
Wang Konglong paused and looked at the dark-haired student in the corner of the front row. He casually picked up a piece of chalk from the blackboard slot and threw it over.
The piece of chalk hit the sleeve of the boy’s uniform with a light “pop.” Five seconds passed, and Shen Juan didn’t move.
The classroom was silent, and everyone’s eyes followed.
Wang Konglong squeezed the piece of chalk in his hand, breaking it into four or five pieces with a snap. He squinted one eye, made a grand gesture like spreading wings, and threw his arm forward. He was short, seemingly not even 1.7 meters tall, and flapped like an old mother hen. The old hen’s arm flicked, and four pieces of chalk “pop, pop, pop, pop” flew towards Shen Juan.
His exaggerated preparation wasn’t in vain; his aim was pretty accurate. Shen Juan was hit four times and finally, slowly raised his head: “Hmm?”
“Hmm? What do you mean ‘hmm’?” Wang Konglong glared from the podium. “Shen Juan, I find you quite a character. Did your desk mate sing you a lullaby? You sleep like you’re in your own bed! Didn’t you copy Ohm’s Law a thousand times? Tell me, what’s i equal to?”
Lin Yujing quietly pulled out the sheets he had copied Ohm’s Law on a thousand times from a pile of textbooks and placed them on his desk.
But the school tough guy was too confident. Without even looking at them, he frowned, squinted, his eyes still red from sleep, and seemed not to hear what Wang Konglong was asking.
Shen Juan slowly straightened up, leaned back, and slumped in his chair, his voice hoarse and low, full of sleepiness: “3.1415926?”
Wang Konglong: “…”
The whole class: “…”
Lin Yujing: “…”
Lin Yujing put down her pen, genuinely wanting to applaud her outstanding desk mate. He even knew pi!!!
Who needs anything more!!!! My desk mate is so excellent!
The result of this was that Shen Juan was punished to copy Ohm’s Law another thousand times. Before class ended, Wang Konglong solemnly reminded them that the monthly exam was approaching, and with their current study status, they wouldn’t even score 30 points.
He even gave Shen Juan a worried look while saying this.
Shen Juan knew nothing of this, lazily copying Ohm’s Law with a slack posture.
Lin Yujing was also worried. When the bell rang, she leaned over, genuinely curious: “You copied Ohm’s Law a thousand times and still didn’t remember?”
Shen Juan yawned: “I didn’t hear what he asked.”
Lin Yujing thought, bro, you’re such a bragger. If you didn’t hear, how could you say pi? Where in physics is there 3.1415926?
“Alright then,” she said dryly, “How are you holding up? The monthly exam is in a week.”
Shen Juan didn’t stop writing, his expression calm, exuding a peaceful and calm confidence: “I’m okay at physics.”
Lin Yujing: “…”
You said the same about English.
Lin Yujing, still owing him a favor, thought for a moment, then tapped the table and suddenly said, “Give me your phone number, or add me on QQ or WeChat or something.”
Shen Juan paused, looked up at her, said nothing, and handed her his phone.
His phone wasn’t locked, no password needed, just a clean home screen. Lin Yujing added herself as a contact and handed the phone back to him. Shen Juan didn’t even look at it.
All the classes for the afternoon were over, except for one self-study period. Lin Yujing used the self-study period to finish her math and physics homework. As soon as she finished the last question, it was time to go home.
The last dismissal bell on Friday was exhilarating. By the time she organized her papers, most of the class had already left. Shen Juan had skipped the self-study period and left early.
Lin Yujing glanced at his physics book spread out on his desk, picked it up, and flipped through it. It was clean, with nothing written except his name on the first page.
Favors are best repaid early; they only become more troublesome the longer you wait.
Shen Juan skipped a self-study period to go to the studio, finalizing the design with a client who wanted a full-back tattoo. After scheduling the appointments, it was already past 7 PM, and he was too lazy to eat dinner, so he went back to sleep.
He’d been averaging only about three hours of sleep a day lately. The tattoo studio, established by Luo Qinghe many years ago, was somewhat well-known in the industry. Now it was under Shen Juan’s care, and he couldn’t let it fail. It had transformed from Luo Qinghe’s faith to Shen Juan’s responsibility.
After a good nap, he woke up to a dark sky. His phone buzzed twice on the coffee table before falling silent again.
Shen Juan took a moment to adjust, then reached for his phone. His eyes, long accustomed to the dark, struggled to focus on the screen. He squinted, adjusted to the light, and read the message.
It was sent a minute ago, at 2:30 AM.
At first glance, Shen Juan almost thought someone had sent him a spam message—
“Weekend double holiday, Lonely in the middle of the night, More passion in,
Xiao Lin teaches you physics.”
There were two attachments, one a text document, the other a PowerPoint file. [Attachment][Attachment]
