Chapter 798 Night Valley
Chapter 798 Night Valley
The first stop in Henan Province was the southern city of Wancheng, roughly located beneath the Seer ship’s lower cargo bay, near the front of the engine room.
It was still a fair distance from the provincial capital Zheng City, so Lin Yu hadn’t told Furbollo or High Mountain that he had already arrived.
For reasons unknown — the performance was unusually not going smoothly. Performing at the Wancheng Youth Palace theater in front of several hundred primary and middle school students, the drama club members were all out of sorts after only one day of rest following a long journey.
Although, because they’d been following Lin Yu, the top-tier performer, everyone’s fundamentals were solid and there were no low-level mistakes like forgetting lines or missing marks, the emotional investment and the play’s infectious power were both lacking.
The most surprising thing was...
The Lin Yu who used to be able to rescue a show and instantly rally the audience’s emotions seemed off his game too.
Even though he still flawlessly completed his stage performance and won enthusiastic applause from those nearly-grown kids in the audience...
In fact, many middle school students were deeply moved by Lin Yu’s acting.
“That handsome big brother acted so well!”
But the drama club members who knew Lin Yu well all noticed he wasn’t right.
His acting was “excellent,” but Lin Yu should have been able to reach a level easily surpassing “excellent.”
And Lin Yu himself, of course, was the most aware of that.
In the dressing room, Shen Bingmiao pushed the door open and tossed a can of sports drink to Lin Yu.
“You were off today, huh? Those kids kept complimenting your face.”
Shen Bingmiao said with a smile.
Normally, after Lin Yu’s performance, he could even make the audience temporarily forget his outstanding looks and be completely stunned by his acting. This time, the fact that people were still discussing his appearance was enough proof that Lin Yu was indeed a bit out of sorts.
Lin Yu took the sports drink from Shen Bingmiao, sipped, then sighed.
“Yeah, I’m a little off today...”
“Are you nervous because the dungeon is about to start tonight, or is something you heard earlier distracting you?” Shen Bingmiao sat beside Lin Yu and asked curiously.
“Just plain tired, and a bit of travel sickness,” Lin Yu rubbed his brow and said. “After all, I’m only a mortal body. There’s been way too much going on lately...”
Since coming out of the last dungeon, there hadn’t even been a moment to breathe.
And today happened to be Tuesday!
It was already afternoon by now, and Lin Yu had long since received the new round of dungeon notifications.
‘Less than 24 hours remain until the latest possible start time of the next game!’
‘Before midnight tonight, please render yourself unconscious or near-unconscious by means of a severe impact.’
When Lin Yu read this new dungeon prompt, he felt a twinge of teeth-grinding discomfort. Knowing that this dungeon’s difficulty would increase again, he wasn’t exactly nervous, but it did give him a headache.
“Want me to give you two days off and have someone else cover the next show?” Shen Bingmiao offered.
“Performing actually relaxes me, senior,” Lin Yu declined her offer and looked at her.
“So which realm is this dungeon in?” he asked.
“Night Valley, the same world as your first dungeon,” Shen Bingmiao gave a thumbs-up. “Although the difficulty increases, there are still tricks you can use in Night Valley.”
“Explain.”
Lin Yu turned to Shen Bingmiao and said.
Shen Bingmiao naturally didn’t hold back and began explaining directly.
“First, Night Valley, like Black Marsh, is a multi-race world. But... you should be able to tell that besides humans, this world has a large number of dark races.”
“Werewolves, the bloodline folk, the undead, demons... these things have irreconcilable enmities with humans, much like the demons in the Prison Mountain Realm.”
“They feed on human souls and flesh, while humans covet the materials and powers those beings possess.”
“However, unlike the demons of the Prison Mountain Realm, these are also organized racial powers.”
“On Night Valley’s far west side, there’s a dark region called the Abyss. Below that are the strongholds of various dark races — human settlements lie outside the Abyss.”
“So the farther east you go, the safer it becomes; the farther west you go, the more dangerous it is.”
“But humans in Night Valley are fierce. They’re not lambs to be devoured by those dark races.”
“Originally, in early Night Valley, the central forest and the Sacred River roughly marked the center of the world. West of that was dark race territory, and east were human towns and villages.”
“But now...”
“The areas actually controlled by dark races have been reduced to the Abyss and a small area around its western edge... Most dark race presences in the east have learned to hide like rats and raccoons in a city, breaking up into small groups to sneak and prey on civilians. They no longer herd or pen humans.”
“The three major human churches and the two great kingdoms’ knight orders serve as the core of the righteous forces. Add the supreme heresy tribunal founded jointly by the three faiths, and the Adventurers’ Guild that houses mercenaries and freelance supernatural fighters as the backbone in country towns, plus a complete system for learning supernatural powers. All that means that even though dark races are born with great strength, humans still beat them into confusion.”
“From the godly perspective, the gods worshiped by Night Valley’s dark races were strong but were heavily injured in the past century and rarely act now. Conversely, the two gods standing with humans are extremely active, continually choosing their spokespeople and Chosen Ones...”
Lin Yu suddenly understood. “So in summary... if I can find powerful humans, I’ll have a lot of local NPC support?”
“Yes. Although for most people, those local NPCs can also be dangerous themselves. Churches and kingdoms don’t protect humanity unconditionally. As external threats decrease, internal strife naturally rises,” Shen Bingmiao said with a curl of her lip. “Also, some experts aren’t very friendly toward players.”
“But... I trust you won’t have problems with that, junior.”
Lin Yu nodded — he agreed.
No matter what, the human camp was on the same side by nature and contained many communicative experts... Even if they weren’t friendly, as long as they weren’t utterly irreconcilable monsters that immediately attacked and devoured, Lin Yu would have plenty of operating space.
If he could talk to them and they could understand, Lin Yu would have the advantage! Especially since they were human.
“Besides that, my dear junior — I also have some nifty little gadgets specifically for the Night Valley Realm to give you.”
Saying so, Shen Bingmiao pulled a small box from her bosom and handed it into Lin Yu’s hand.
