Chapter 1387 Dark Phoenix and Heavenly Kirin Clan!
Chapter 1387 Dark Phoenix and Heavenly Kirin Clan!
The Battle Arena of the Black Dragon Palace was already overflowing long before the battle was about to begin. Rows upon rows of outer disciples filled the lower stands, while the higher platforms were occupied by inner disciples whose presence alone caused the surrounding air to feel heavier.
Waves of anticipation rolled through the crowd as countless gazes remained fixed on the arena floor, waiting for the one whose name had shaken the entire Verdant Sky Realm.
Max arrived at the arena alongside Lady Virelia, with Carl and Lucia following closely behind. The moment his figure appeared at the entrance, a subtle shift rippled through the arena. Whispers spread like wildfire, eyes narrowing and widening in equal measure as attention locked onto him.
Max remained calm, his expression steady, yet the moment his gaze swept across the arena, his brows furrowed slightly. At the center of the arena, beside the seven family heads, stood two distinct groups whose presence made his instincts recoil.
A faint sense of rejection stirred within his body, subtle yet unmistakable. Max narrowed his eyes, observing them more carefully. Dark phoenix flames flickered faintly around one group, elegant yet ominous, while the other exuded a restrained but domineering aura reminiscent of ancient divine beasts.
'Is it their bloodline?' Max wondered silently. The Dark Phoenix Bloodline and the Heavenly Kirin Bloodline were part of the Dark Trinity, just like the Black Dragon Chaotic Bloodline, yet instead of familiarity, his bloodline responded with resistance, as if rejecting their existence outright.
"So this is the child who took the sword of the Sword Sovereign and made the entire Divine Realm tremble?" A mature woman stepped forward from the Dark Phoenix Clan. Her dark violet hair flowed down her back like burning twilight, and her eyes carried an ancient, piercing sharpness.
Raven Sunborne, the matriarch of the Dark Phoenix Clan, assessed Max from head to toe without hiding her disdain. "You do not look like much. An eighth level Divine Rank cultivator who still carries the aura of someone fresh from ascension. Tell me, how did the sword possibly recognize you as its master?"
"Perhaps I am simply the one the sword has been waiting for," Max replied with a faint smile, his tone light and unbothered.
"Destined one?" Raven Sunborne's expression darkened, her lips curling into a cold sneer. "Do not throw such words around lightly. True destined ones are figures who stand at the peak of their generation, leaders who bend eras to their will. Looking at you, all I see is someone who barely finished adapting to the Divine Realm."
Max merely shrugged, his calm demeanor unchanged. He had spoken in jest, yet it was clear she had taken his words far more seriously than intended.
"Matthew," a deep voice cut in, heavy with authority and impatience. The clan head of the Heavenly Kirin Clan, Jeremy Jordan, finally spoke, his gaze fixed solely on Max. Unlike Raven Sunborne, his focus was sharp and direct, devoid of mockery. "Has this child truly agreed to our challenge or not?"
For him, nothing else mattered. The Dragonheart Sword was a threat that could not be ignored. If it remained active, acknowledged by a disciple of the Black Dragon Clan, then the balance within the Dark Trinity would tilt dangerously. He feared that one day, with that sword in hand, the Black Dragon Clan might rise above both the Dark Phoenix Clan and the Heavenly Kirin Clan. That possibility alone was enough to make the sword unacceptable.
It was for this reason that both clans had convened emergency meetings the moment news spread. Their decision had been swift and resolute. The sword must be sealed away once more, returned to its dormant state where it could threaten no one. Beyond internal rivalry, there was a deeper concern.
As long as the sword of the Sword Sovereign was active within a third rate star realm like the Verdant Sky Realm, it would draw the eyes of second rate and first rate star realms. Should such forces descend upon them, none of the Dark Trinity Clans would have the power to resist.
And so they stood here now, not merely to challenge Max, but to erase the sword's presence from the world once again, no matter the cost.
Matthew nodded with a faint smile, his expression calm yet resolute as he spoke in a steady voice. "He did agree to it, but he set a clear condition from the very beginning. The two candidates he will face from the two clans must not have cultivation higher than the eighth level of the Rebirth Realm, because anything beyond that would no longer be a fair challenge."
"The eighth level of the Rebirth Realm?" Clan Head Jeremy repeated, a slow smile spreading across his face as though he found the demand almost amusing. "You should already know how things work among our three clans. Our disciples only compete against one another once they have reached the peak of the Rebirth Realm or higher, and because of that tradition, the candidates we selected are all at the peak of the Rebirth Realm and beyond."
Matthew shook his head lightly, his tone firm as he responded without hesitation. "If that is the case, then there will be no battle at all and the challenge will not take place. Under such conditions, the agreement becomes meaningless."
Jeremy's smile faded slightly as he looked at Matthew, his brows knitting together with irritation. "Why must you be so troublesome, Matthew?" he asked with a hint of accusation in his voice. "Are you protecting him simply because he joined your Grimes Family, or is there something else behind this?"
Matthew let out a cold sneer, his eyes sharpening as he met Jeremy's gaze head-on. "Do not try to change the subject, Jeremy. You and I both know exactly what you are doing. Sending peak Rebirth Realm disciples against someone who is only at the eighth level of the Divine Rank is nothing short of shameless. If the candidates you send are not at or below the eighth level of the Rebirth Realm, then there will be no challenge at all, and you might as well turn around and go home."
Clan Head Jeremy fell silent, his expression darkening as his thoughts churned. He had originally intended to use peak Rebirth Realm disciples to completely suppress Max through sheer overwhelming strength, leaving no room for resistance or dignity, yet it was now clear that such a plan would not be allowed to pass so easily.
After a brief pause, another voice entered the discussion.
"Very well, then we will send two candidates at the eighth level of the Rebirth Realm," Clan Head Raven of the Dark Phoenix Clan said calmly, her tone carrying a trace of reluctant concession. She continued with a faint sigh, "Just so you are aware, our original intention was to send two disciples at the Law Awakening Realm. We believed their strength was the most appropriate for a battle of this nature, neither too low to be placed among the outer disciples nor too high to stand among the core disciples, but since matters have come to this, we will comply."
