Chapter 2089: First Battle!
Chapter 2089: First Battle!
"A little disappointing?" Fin repeated, then let out a light laugh. There was open contempt in his eyes as he looked Max over. "For someone at the 1st level of the Law Manifestation Realm, you talk awfully big."
As the words left his mouth, the atmosphere around him shifted.
The air inside the arena began to churn violently. Wind gathered around Fin in visible currents, spinning around his body faster and faster until the whole area seemed to warp.
At the same time, the golden halo above his head brightened and poured out a pure radiance that mixed with the raging wind.
Fin spread his wings. "Let me show you what the Angel Race can do."
Seven enormous cyclones took shape around him. Each one was several meters wide and packed with compressed wind law, and they spun so fast that their edges became almost invisible while sharp currents of air carved shallow grooves into the stone floor of the arena.
Fin raised one hand. "Wind Cyclone Turbine!"
The seven cyclones surged forward, though not in a simple straight line. They curved around one another and came at Max from different angles, constantly changing direction. Their speed was so great that an ordinary cultivator would have struggled to track even one of them.
Max, however, stood perfectly still with Dragonheart resting in his hand, and his eyes followed every cyclone without any trouble.
For a moment, he did nothing at all. Then his aura changed.
The pressure around him grew strangely quiet. There was no violent burst of energy and no overwhelming wave of killing intent, yet something far more dangerous spread through the arena.
It was the Emotion Severing Path.
Max slowly raised Dragonheart, and the instant his pseudo cosmic path merged with the sword, the blade seemed to lose all ordinary presence. There was no dazzling sword light and no enormous sword projection, only a strange sense of severance.
Fin’s expression shifted slightly. He couldn’t explain what he was feeling, but every instinct in his body suddenly screamed a warning.
Max swung, and the first strike cut through the air just as the seven cyclones reached him.
Then something strange happened.
The frontmost cyclone split apart, though not because Max had overpowered it with brute force. Its structure simply fell apart as the wind law holding it together was severed.
The second cyclone followed, and then the third. Within a single breath, all seven lost their cohesion and dissolved into scattered currents of wind before they could ever touch him.
Fin’s eyes went wide. "What?"
He had barely gotten the word out before Max moved, appearing several meters closer as Dragonheart flashed again.
Fin reacted immediately. Golden wind gathered around his wings as he twisted his body aside.
Clang!
A sword made of condensed wind formed in his hand just in time to block the strike, and the moment the two weapons met, Fin felt something terrifying. The connection between him and his wind sword began to weaken.
His expression changed, and he leapt backward at once.
Max didn’t chase recklessly. He simply stepped forward and attacked again, bringing the second strike down from above.
Fin crossed both arms, and wind condensed into a thick golden shield.
Dragonheart struck it, and the shield held for less than a second before the law structure inside it was severed and the entire defense collapsed.
Fin was driven back several steps, and his confidence was gone completely. "What kind of pseudo cosmic path is that?"
Max didn’t answer, since he had no reason to explain anything. He shifted his grip on Dragonheart and attacked a third time.
Fin finally stopped holding back. The halo above his head flared brilliantly as his wings expanded, and a massive storm formed behind him until the whole arena filled with roaring wind. Golden blades appeared within the storm while several layers of wind law wrapped around his body.
He had clearly activated his own pseudo cosmic path, and the pressure was far stronger than before. For someone at the 2nd level of the Divine Lord Realm, it was not weak at all.
Fin raised both hands. "Pseudo Cosmic Path, Heavenly Tempest Domain!"
The storm exploded outward, and countless wind blades rushed toward Max.
Max looked at them calmly, and then the Emotion Severing Path fully activated. His eyes turned cold.
Dragonheart moved. One sword strike was all it took.
The sword light crossed the arena, and the Heavenly Tempest Domain split apart. The wind blades vanished, the storm collapsed, and even the golden halo above Fin’s head dimmed.
Fin stood frozen with his eyes wide as a thin line of sword light appeared across his body.
Then his battle projection began breaking apart. His form cracked from the center, light spilled out from within, and a moment later he disappeared from the arena entirely.
Silence followed. The whole fight had lasted only a few exchanges.
The system notification appeared right away.
[Battle concluded.]
[Winner: Max Voidwalker.]
[Loser: Fin.]
[50 Bronze Marks transferred.]
[Current Bronze Marks: 117.]
Max glanced at the message, then looked toward the spot where Fin had vanished. "That was better."
He dismissed the notification and turned toward the edge of the arena, since he still needed more Bronze Marks before he could challenge the Second Shadow Trial.
Max didn’t waste much time after leaving the arena. With his Bronze Marks back at a more comfortable level, he turned his attention to the Challenge Platform again and started scanning the available names.
This time he picked someone offering a wager of one hundred Bronze Marks, and the challenge went through immediately.
[Challenge initiated.]
[Participant Max Voidwalker has challenged Participant Caelen.]
[Wager: 100 Bronze Marks.]
[Both participants are being summoned to the arena.]
Space twisted around Max. The second monolith disappeared from view, and in the next instant he was standing inside another battle arena that looked almost identical to the last one.
The circular battlefield was enclosed by a translucent barrier, and formation lines glowed faintly beneath the stone floor. Beyond the barrier, the noise of the monolith was muted, leaving only the quiet hum of the arena formations.
A second flash of light appeared across from him as his opponent materialized.
Max’s eyes narrowed slightly, because by coincidence, the person he had challenged was also a Primordial.
The man looked to be in his mid-twenties, tall and broad-shouldered, with silver-black hair and faint primordial patterns running from the side of his neck down toward his arms. The aura around him was much heavier than Fin’s had been, since he stood at the 3rd level of the Divine Lord Realm.
The Primordial looked toward Max, and unlike Fin, he neither laughed nor sneered. Instead, his expression turned complicated as his eyes moved over Max before settling on his cultivation realm, which was only the 1st level of the Law Manifestation Realm.
The Primordial frowned. "So the rumors were true."
Max raised an eyebrow. "You know me?"
"I’ve heard your name."
That explained the absence of mockery. This Primordial genius had clearly heard what happened in Bloodstone City, and he knew Max had beaten a Dragon Race genius while standing only at the Law Manifestation Realm. That alone was enough to keep him from repeating Fin’s mistake.
Even so, there was something else in his expression, and it looked like disapproval.
The Primordial crossed his arms. "I won’t underestimate you."
His gaze sharpened. "But I still don’t understand why the elders let someone at the Law Manifestation Realm into the Godslayer’s Pilgrimage."
