(Yohooo~ Var is awesome! Even though it’s been a year since you hit this level, you’ve already mastered your power to the fullest extent.)
Varian ignored Samsara’s annotation and sighed inwardly.
Four years of hard work plus the resources of God Emperor’s palace easily pushed him to the very peak of rank 2.
The remaining resources were given away as incentives. This was also the reason why that female divine rank 2 was born in just five years.
Peak rank 2 was an entirely different realm of strength.
Varian could not only split the galaxy into two, he could also destroy it all if he wanted to.
But...
’I shouldn’t hurry, but why am I struck here? Why can’t I breakthrough into rank 3?’
Perhaps it was normal. After all, rank 3 was compared to the Primordial gods. Maybe it’s supposed to take time.
’I never had any such bottlenecks. And this feels less like a bottleneck and more like a ban.’
Varian turned his attention to the thing that didn’t change in the past five years.
The eyes imprinted on his soul. They were watching him with glee. He could now vaguely feel it.
The ban, the weight that’s preventing him from reaching rank 3 came from within, from these eyes.
’Neither the God Emperor nor Eon reached rank 3, despite being peak rank 2s for so long. Eon too saw those eyes. I bet God Emperor has seen them too.
If I can convince him to fight out this guy first before settling our differences...’
Varian was ready to give it a try. He made all the preparations necessary.
His divine paths were at the peak. His slivers were also ready.
In fact, preparing Samsara took a significant time of his training.
Logos took so long to fuse. Even though he fused the slivers of life and death, there were still some rough edges. With her help, he pushed the slivers to the complete perfection.
’All that’s left is doing the thing itself.’
So, Varian set off.
From outer space to inner space and inner space to core space.
There was only unending darkness. But in that darkness, there was a brilliant structure emitting light in the shape of an eye.
God’s Eye.
Mana was flowing from core space to inner space and to the universe, as it always did.
Flowing with mana were the harsh currents of space-time.
Back when he was a mortal ranker, he had to be careful of these currents. This no longer had any effect now. They seemed to automatically shift around him, catering to his comfort.
Finally, he reached the region.
He wanted go and check if that man was still there. But he decided against going himself.
What if God Emperor knew his attempts outside and prepared an ambush?
Even though he’s a peak rank 2, he couldn’t underestimate his opponent.
’He’s been a peak rank 2 for so long, who knows what he can do.’
Varian condensed a clone and sent it in. With the clone were also mini-slivers he condensed over the years.
It was just a clone with 30% of his strength, but it had the strength of a peak rank 2 as well.
Through it, Varian experienced the region once again.
God’s Eye was vast, so vast that it could occupy a hundred star systems. It glowed in a brilliant white, an ethereal feel to the place. It looked like a milky lake on a dark night.
Varian’s clone reached the red temple inside.
Temple of God, it was called. It was said to stop, or at the very least, slow the expansion of God’s Eye.
Inside the temple was the familiar pitch black floor with white veins—the condensed space-time itself.
"I didn’t know it back then. But I’m sure now. This is the power of a Primordial God."
So, this problem of God’s eye expanding and devouring the space-time existed back then too.
They’ve tried to stop it and couldn’t.
"The temple does restrict, but it cannot erase the root cause."
He crossed the corridors that he walked with other contestants back then—the room of trials, the bridge and reached the double door.
It was a completely different experience as a pseudo divine ranker and a peak rank 2 divine.
Eventually, he reached the ancient double door—the only way to enter as all of the space was otherwise locked by this temple. Trying to force through would damage it, with unpredictable consequences.
"Haaa~"
Last time, he was in for a moment. A thousand years passed outside and all hell was let loose.
As a clone, he hopefully wouldn’t get another surprise upon return.
"Huh? These?"
Varian noticed symbols and strings of characters on the door. He couldn’t decipher them last time.
But now, they seemed eerily similar to the characters used by Heaven tribe.
"No, Heaven were using these characters."
Most of the letters were either fully or partially gone. Varian could only make out a few sentences.
[We have to forever fight our instinct to fuse. Once we fuse, He will awaken.]
[We cannot erase the destruction. Our powers were not enough. We can only slow it.]
[Slivers have weaker instincts but even they have the instinct to fuse. It’s impossible to prevent. Sooner or later, the slivers will fuse. He will return. Is there no way?]
[Hortus is a failure. For whatever reason, it cannot reach the level of universe. Not in scale, but in quality. Hortus is missing something.]
[We experimented a lot. The forbidden regions, the slivers, Hortus...nothing is working.
We feel like puppets trying to break the strings, without realizing that all moves are enabled by the strings.]
[The Universe will either be devoured by God’s Eye first or he will awaken and destroy it himself. No one can stop him.]
[We cannot prevent ourselves any longer. Death is the only way to prevent this. May those who come after us have a solution one day.]
[We had a lot of confidence when we made Hortus. That we could go past this universe. It was the seed of our plan.
But we no longer have any confidence.
It’s over.
It’s all over.]
Varian recalled the words of the dead primordial gods he heard in Hortus all those years ago.
’You might be able to do what we couldn’t, no, you should. It’s an important thing, the only important thing.’
Why? Because God’s Eye was going to destroy everything.
’This cosmic seed is the only success we had after so many attempts. We haven’t been able to use it to achieve our purpose. Maybe you can...’
Hortus was the only attempt they deemed successful. But even that failed.
’The universe is too complex to be created at once. So, the cosmic seed can incorporate other worlds and grow into the cosmos.’
Now, it was making sense.
Hortus was supposed to ’devour’ the universe before God’s Eye did it.
’The very purpose of the cosmic seed is to devour the universe and create a new universe.’
When he asked why bother when they already had a universe, they only laughed. He was only understanding their perspective now.
The reality was so despairing that they could only laugh.
Varian too faced the same reality. But he didn’t despair.
He pushed the door open and stepped in.
