Chapter 150: Feel the Rush
Chapter 150: Feel the Rush
Vale sighed as he looked toward the village from afar, spotting a plethora of soot and mud-covered faces staring back toward him.
’Pitiful...’
It had been five days since Vale had ascended out of the canyon, and within those five days, everything had gone perfectly.
The villagers tried to chase them from time to time, but Vale and his Legion would just run away into the forest.
If the villagers got overzealous and followed, then they’d have to run through the rose bushes, injuring themselves, plus even if they got close to Vale’s group, each warrior was physically stronger by a fair margin.
Not to mention Toy and Awilix could maneuver their lithe forms around the forest without having to be subjected to the rose ground, carving up anyone who dared to tread too far away with ease.
In fact, about 200 villagers had died this way, their bodies hidden somewhere beneath where the red roses grew.
And, speaking of Toy...
Vale had decided to make her and Edith swap weapons.
Toy was a bit attached to [Iron Plea], but she wasn’t going to reject Vale’s order.
So, Toy now wielded a dagger and Edith the halberd.
While Toy was a bit sad at first, losing her hard-earned gift, she soon learned how easy it was to use her Aspect with a lighter weapon. It was clear this was a necessary weapon swap.
The ghost of Mias whispered into Vale’s ear:
"It’s almost time..."
As for what Mias meant...
It was almost time for them to unleash an offensive upon the villagers.
While Vale would love to attrit them further, they couldn’t risk their attack being discovered by an outsider. They had to speed up this slow choking of resources.
Sadly, this full frontal assault would have to come during the light hours as the main form of combat would be Awilix’s Eclipse, which could only take form under light.
Vale nodded lightly toward the wisp of smoke dancing on his shoulder.
"Alright, make sure the other squads know the plan."
The smoke faded as an echo of Mias’s voice replied:
"Of course."
As for the plan...
With the people of the village weakened and their arrows mostly exhausted, it was time to set in place the final nail.
What they were going to do was send Stacy’s and Edith’s squad, along with Vale, Awilix, and Toy in as a decoy.
Each of them would attempt to get atop a building and start hurling whatever they could grab down at their enemies. A few warriors would undoubtedly die as they still had some projectiles left, but that was all right with Vale.
Their goal was simply mayhem and chaos.
After all, it was unlikely that they’d be able to win in such a decisive manner against a force of around two and a half thousand.
However, the main goal was for Diana’s squad to finish Salome’s initial job of spreading fire — to select buildings, of course.
The buildings they were going to set on fire were the ones storing the most food and people.
Then, they’d also destroy the well that provided them with water.
Once that task was done, they’d retreat into the woods, wait two more nights, and launch the final assault and reap the rewards at dawn of the day of reckoning.
Vale waited fifteen more minutes, until wisp Mias spoke the word "advance" in his ear.
When he did, Vale shouted his order and ordered Alpha and Stacy’s squad to attack from the west as he, his Champions, and Edith’s squad attacked from the south.
Vale jumped off the tree he’d been hiding in, landing in a bushel of roses.
’Ouch.’
Thankfully, his pants and boots were thick enough to block most of the thorns, but a few still pricked, forcing him to reinforce his legs a little.
Awilix shouted from above.
"Head’s up!"
Vale looked up just in time to catch a glimpse of Awilix before she latched onto him and crawled around and sat on his back.
Awilix, with one arm around Vale’s neck, threw her other forward toward the village.
"To battle!"
’Aren’t I supposed to be your master?’
Well...
’I guess not...’
Awilix was still Affiliated. Although her Loyalty was creeping closer and closer to 100.
’Whatever...’
Vale sighed as he began to trudge through the field of thrones, out into the clearing, his army at his back. The tide of pink and black was ready to bloodily drown their foes who dared defy their master’s will.
Vale and his forces didn’t run; they just sauntered down a somewhat cleared path, announcing their invasion.
The villagers saw this display and began reinforcing their defense, overloading the south side.
Then, off to his left, Vale saw Alpha leading a squadron over the scorched farmland, headed for the barns, walking the same pace as him.
’This...’
Vale’s army encroached closer and closer.
’This is exhilarating!’
Not a single arrow had been fired or sword swung, yet Vale’s blood was pumping, and Lust, due to his lust for battle, was creeping into Vale’s mind, prepping for slaughter.
Of course...
Vale wasn’t particularly happy about who’d he’d be slaughtering, as most of the villagers were young and he didn’t want to kill a child.
’But what has to be done, has to be done.’
Vale himself decided he’d spare a child, never striking one down.
But his mental reservations would remain in his head, never to influence his forces — his Legion didn’t care for how many years their foes got to live before they didn’t anymore, and Vale wouldn’t make them.
The moment Vale entered into range, a pitifully weak shot from an arrow arced slowly toward him.
Vale smiled as he brought his hand into its path, ready to clutch it out of mid-air and snap it.
’Really?!’
But, instead, Awilix leaned forward and did it before him.
’This cat needs to learn some manners...’
That was supposed to be Vale’s moment!
Vale laughed internally as the cat fell forward and over his head because of her action, landing in the roses below.
’Now look what you’ve done!’
Awilix growled as she picked herself up, fresh cuts littering her body.
"These damned asshole! How dare they trick me!"
Vale sighed as he plucked Awilix off the ground and tucked her beneath his arm.
Walking closer, more arrows started to fly, but they were of little consequence; even if they landed, they did minimal damage as long as Vale spread his Aether evenly to reinforce his body.
Only a dozen meters out, Vale looked down at the cat cradled in his arms.
"Are you ready?"
Awilix shouted back:
"Send me in!"
Vale smiled wickedly as he shifted his right arm into a catapult-like structure and pulled it back. Then, Awilix sat in his palm.
A moment later, Vale’s reeled back arm shot forth, and the cat flung through the air with a glorious war cry.
The villagers on the edge of the town, who had been firing arrows, looked up in horror as the cat sailed toward them hidden beneath the sun’s blinding rays.
A moment later, their sight had been robbed as the Eclipsed consumed the light of day, enveloping the defenders.
Vale smiled as the ten-meter by ten-meter black cube formed on the edge of the village.
A moment later came the sounds of slaughter.
Cries of agony and pain filled the air as Awilix danced around in the darkness, which only she held dominion over.
Coinciding with each new cry, the edge of the Eclipse began to assume a golden glow.
But Vale’s goal and job weren’t to watch Awilix do all of the work. Especially because it wasn’t hard for the villagers to figure out that staying away from the black cube of death was for the better.
His job was culling those around the black box, forcing them into Awilix’s killing floor, or facing Vale.
"Now!"
Vale screamed as he took the tower shield from the Nexus of Beggings and made the final stretch of the charge hidden behind it.
A multitude of arrows bounced off the metal barrier but harmlessly fell off. Vale soon reached the line left of the barrier and dropped the shield, revealing both his arms, which had been transformed into blades.
With a terrible grin, Vale stared at the front line of enemies as he jumped in the air and landed in the middle of them.
Those holding a bow shivered while shooting in his direction, only to hit their allies. Those wielding pitchforks or stem blades tried to engage Vale, only to get impaled.
The system sang in his ears, each culled awarding a single Aether shard.
’It seems my kills are automatically absorbed, even out here...’
Vale was quite thankful for that, as he wasn’t too keen on digging through a human’s corpse for the stone, assuming a human’s core solidified upon death.
Apart from Aether, each time Vale’s blade arm found its way to an opponent’s heart, he felt the mix of rapturous glee from battle and slight disgust at his actions.
But as much as his humanity mattered to him...
His life mattered more.
Vale, being consumed by passion, screamed in insanity as he chopped the head off of a young woman, then stabbed his other arm through a young man’s chest.
"Aw yeah!"
A few managed to scrape his skin, but anyone who dared cause him a scratch soon found their head amongst the roses.
’This truly is invigorating!’
Vale’s deranged nature only grew with each new victim he felled.
’Man, I really do turn sadistic when fighting...’
Or more so when killing.
After all, the rush of oxytocin caused by each kill wasn’t something Vale could control.
