Chapter 161: Home
Chapter 161: Home
The rest of the day passed as if nothing had happened.
’That was...’
’something...’
***
At the dawn of the new day, Vale breathed in deeply and finally launched himself out of the bed, waking the three others who’d decided to sleep with him and repeat last night’s actions.
As much as he loved this new bed, it also presented a problem...
’It’s too comfortable!’
Vale, especially after this past month, wanted to stay in a supine trance, free of mortal toils.
’But no rest for the wicked.’
Vale stretched and put on his clothes, Toy following suit. Awilix hissed at Vale for pushing her and did the same.
Only Salome stayed naked, rolling over the bed in an attempt to clean it by way of her racial trait.
As for what they had to do today...
Vale boldly declared:
"Decoration time!"
Awilix, dead cat girl revived, fell on all fours and leaned forward, stretching her back, then asked:
"Your head okay?"
’Seriously, you are in no condition to be asking that.’
Vale beamed a smile at Awilix.
"It’s never been more okay!"
’I haven’t felt this well rested since I’ve been transported here.’
Vale would have probably felt like this the day before, but the shenanigans with Awilix dying and reviving had thrown off his whole day.
Not that he’d particularly accomplished anything yesterday besides resting. And, well, going over the implications of Awilix’s conditions with Mias.
Alongside the secondary boon he hadn’t expected from Awilix becoming a Champion...
After a few more stretches, Vale made his way to the logistical hub, where all of the spoils of war had been dumped.
As much as he wanted to wallow in despair over what it took to acquire these items...
’I don’t really have the luxury to contemplate morality any further.’
He did what he had to do to survive.
And after feeling that momentary despair when he thought Awilix had died, he came to realize he regretted very little if his actions were ones which prevented such a future...
In fact, the only thing he regretted was Ophelia living the encounter and Ximena remaining imprisoned.
Vale sighed as he looked over the chairs, rugs, blankets, pillows, and tables.
Spending his day assorting his new items wasn’t a way to give him a break, but something to do.
The canyon outside had become infested with fairly strong creatures. As Vale feared, a vast number of these creatures were Emergent.
Even Salome’s safety wasn’t guaranteed if she went outside.
Unfortunately, Vale’s Legion did have to eat still, so they couldn’t stay wholly inside. But thankfully, they’d grown to the point where, as long as they were in a capable group, they could hunt for their own food. Though a casualty or two seemed almost destined.
Salome or Mias would follow as a supervisor in case an Emergent Monster or higher showed up.
As for the Aether from the humans they’d killed...
It turned out that since they were Flesh Constructs, whatever that meant, their Aether Cores did not solidify upon death.
Instead, a set amount of Aether would transfer from the victim to the killer – a universal law.
Any remaining Aether would be trapped within the dead skin cells or released, as he’d already known.
Vale sighed.
’Why does my mind always drift to heavy or logistical topics after indulgence...’
It seemed to be one extreme to another with Vale.
Extreme indulgence in his lust followed by the extreme bitch-slapping of reality and internal contemplation on the reasoning for the operant principles governing the world.
Vale shook his head violently and shouted.
"Decor, decor!"
A few nearby imps looked at their master as if her were crazy.
’Wait...’
’Maybe I am crazy?’
Vale had long lost the credibility to claim complete sanity.
’...’
’Whatever.’
Vale shrugged before looking over the pile, Awilix and Toy standing next to him, having followed him.
Salome would join them soon after she finished ’cleaning’ Vale’s bed as best she could.
"Hmm..."
Vale’s eyes danced upon a vase and a nightstand.
"I think I’ll take these."
Vale trotted over, then picked up the wooden construct with one hand and the glass vase with his other.
Toy watched Vale with confusion as he trotted away and back toward his sleeping quarters.
Then, she followed him and asked:
"Huh? What are you doing?"
Vale laughed as he set the nightstand next to the bed. Then the vase atop it, which he put the undying rose in.
"Decorating! See, isn’t it all coming together now? Why don’t you decorate your room as well?"
Vale stepped back and admired the bed on the partially broken wooden bedframe, with the nightstand holding the vase and rose, and the rug that stretched from the base of the bed to the room’s entrance.
Toy looked a little confused as she stared at Vale’s jubilant expression.
"Uh... okay!"
Salome, who’d been rolling around on the bed, leaned her head off the back and gave Vale a warm smile.
"I will as well. But, which room is mine?"
Vale’s lips curled up, and his eyes softened.
’I guess she has only slept in here or Toy’s...’
The only one who’d been sleeping in their own room consistently was Toy.
"The one directly across the hallway from this one."
Awilix, who had eventually followed, stood in the doorway and yawned again.
Then, she revealed a half-charred lacquered wooden door and set it against the wall.
Then Awilix blurted out:
"This room is mine too."
Vale stared blankly at her and the ugly singed door.
’Where did that even come from...’
"No, your room is two down the hall on the right..."
Awilix extended her claws and began scratching at the wooden door, sending wooden chips tumbling to the ground.
"Nah, this is our room."
Vale was about to complain, but decided otherwise...
Salome joined in:
"Actually... this is my room too."
Toy, after hearing the words of her master, chimed in excitedly:
"Same here!"
Vale lightly frowned.
’I’m never going to have privacy, am I?’
But that frown soon turned upside down.
"Alright, then..."
Vale cast his gaze around the room, and added:
"I guess we’ll need to make this place bigger."
Vale immediately got back to work on his blueprints, making the imps knock down the walls separating the rooms on either side of the hall.
Vale’s side would become one gigantic bedroom, and Salome’s bedroom side would become the lounge area.
The other two would be left untouched as, even if Mias and Ximena didn’t need to sleep, they both valued their privacy.
...
’Ximena...’
Suddenly, the warmth in his chest cooled a degree.
