Chapter 276: Exchange of Pleasantries
Chapter 276: Exchange of Pleasantries
A deranged silence filled the air after Wrath sat down.
Vale internally sighed as his eyes fell upon the wicked green bastard who held an all too pleased expression.
Sure, he’d been able to explain himself and had given a ’satisfactory’ explanation for why he did what he did, but the damage was done.
Envy’s provocation was about much more than making Wrath turn on him at the moment; it was about making Wrath weary of him in the future.
While the Vice weren’t exactly model people carrying good reputations to begin with, Wrath’s prime directive was a mutual alliance pact due to the threat of the Corrupted, a pact which Vale’s actions went against.
In other words, Wrath now saw Vale as the problem child number one.
’And... can he stop looking at me!’
Vale had been staring at Envy — praying Wrath would turn his head from him — but his eyes stayed posted on Vale.
Pride laughed, then glanced at Vale.
"Pay him no mind. Wild dogs like him love to bark a lot more than they like to fight."
Wrath clicked his tongue, letting his glare tighten further.
’Pride said that! Why is he still looking at me?!’
Pride looked away from Vale and shrugged.
"I usually don’t care to join in, but let me say something... Wrath, Beakon will fall. And then, your dungeon will be on my land."
The pressure of fear and inferiority lifted slightly.
Vale sighed lightly in relief.
Wrath replied:
"Was that supposed to be a threat, Pride?"
"I’m not one petty enough to give a threat — only promises. But, since you’re so ignorant and simple-minded, let me spell it out for you... Either submit or fall."
Wrath slammed his fist into the table.
"Man... you lot really are always trying your best to piss me off." His gauntleted fingers curled in and scraped against his palm. "Well, then. Beakon will fall, you say?"
Pride laughed.
"Of course it will."
Taking a deep breath in, Wrath leaned back in his throne.
"Well, Pride, I regret to inform you I am petty enough to give threats... I don’t care about joining hands with Beakon. And even if they won’t accept my help, I’ll force them to."
"Oh?" Pride sat up, finally lifting his cheek from his fist. "Are you saying what I think you are? How hypocritical!"
"Yes, I am. You’re uncontrollable."
Pride clasped his hands together.
"How amusing you are, mutt! How amusing."
The subtext wasn’t too hard to understand, but what would happen as a result was.
’So... Wrath is going to forcefully ally with Beakon to defend against Pride.’
The Vice who, when he set his sights on something, claimed it at that very moment.
Therefore...
Wrath and Pride were going to fight.
And, it didn’t seem like a single fight to settle their differences. The clear undertone of their voices suggested fighting until their last breath. Maybe it wouldn’t actually play out like that, but it was clear the feud between Wrath and Pride was one better discussed in blood.
Wrath received Pride’s patronization, and paid it no heed.
Once again, another dreadful silence fell over the sinful crew.
No cough saved Vale this time. It was his turn.
The only thing going Vale’s way at the moment was Pride had taken on all of Wrath’s attention and vice versa, sparing Vale from the full brutal brunt.
"I don’t know if information has traveled cross-continent, but Akkuron and Celestia are at war. Also, Seed activity is non-existent in my area. One more thing... Greed visited me, which is why she’s absent."
Wrath didn’t even shift his eyes, keeping them trained on Pride.
"Anything else you’ve been gracelessly hiding?"
Vale wished to hide it, but since Envy might have known already — depending on the unknown method her forces used to transmit information — there was more risk in hiding than revealing.
"I’ve joined the war on the side of Akkuron."
Wrath scoffed.
"Do keep in mind, Lust, that humans are worse than us Vice. Never trust them. Never let them see your back. Not that I’d care if they stabbed yours."
Sadly, Vale had already shown them his back.
Though it wasn’t like he couldn’t given the circumstance. However...
"I’ll keep that in mind."
’Akkuron will never earn my trust.’
With Vale’s turn neatly done and half glossed over, the stage flipped to Gluttony. The woman dressed in a provocative orange dress with sleek black laces holding it together, gleaming like a spider’s thread in the soft morning light.
The woman sat rigid in her throne and crossed her legs.
"I expected something remotely civil, but this?" the beautiful woman derided, "sounds like nothing more than a childish squabble. Have you bastards not learned that Wrath’s warning is not baseless?"
The woman leaned forward, placing a hand on her chest.
"I’m a queen from Kaldora, one who fought the Scourge for too long. Much too long. I know more than most the horrors they represent and the sheer devastation they wrought. Yet, you ingrates treat this situation so callously and sneer with pointed words at one another. It’s disgusting. Revolting."
Vale’s eyes widened.
’Another Kaldoran?’
As a Master...
Let alone, it was one who appeared to have possessed quite the status back on Kaldora. Even now, she carried a haughty presence that her power lacked to keep up with.
However, it was only a matter of time.
With how she spoke, it was obvious this woman was a warrior. One who cared not for toiling around.
Pride sneered.
"You have a lot to say for someone so weak, Gluttony."
"Maybe I should introduce myself. I don’t like that title too much. So, call me by my real name, Adephagia. And, as much as I’d urge you to call me ’Queen,’ I’ve already witnessed that the limits of your grace go as far as the confines of your skull — so, I can overlook your contempt as nothing more than naive ignorance."
Pride chuckled.
"Since when has the stating of a fact been a sign of contempt?"
Adephagia smiled.
"And since when could one be called ’Pride,’ yet be so lacking in that regard?"
Pride shook his head.
"You mock us for our exchange of pleasantries, yet you join in with the same intensity. Now, now... Gluttony, you definitely are a queen."
