Chapter 1878: Devil vs Dragons
Chapter 1878: Devil vs Dragons
Adam knew very little about the events that had taken place hundreds or thousands of years ago, as they had virtually no impact on his battles and path.
Also, no one was in a hurry to tell him about such ancient conflicts either.
In fact, what he was seeing now wasn’t supposed to happen. It was only because of Amelia’s intervention and the offer of her Legacy Artifact with the seal that this became possible.
Adam understood the conflict between the Citadel and the Frost Dragons Clan.
Laerdor, as the leader, and his subordinates chose to submit to the Befallen Crown rather than try to contact the Citadel and somehow resolve the issue. Even Kae’ra, who was hostile toward the Befallen Crown, accepted her father’s decision since she understood he had no other choice.
Well, Laerdor faced a difficult choice. Basically, he had to make either the Befallen Crown or the Citadel his enemy. It was a situation no one would want to find themselves in.
In this case, there was no good or bad choice, there was only a bad choice and an even worse one.
Unfortunately for Laerdor and his entire clan, he made the wrong choice. Instead of choosing the bad option, he chose the worst one.
Crack!
Gladius severed the guard’s head, killing a Lord in a single move.
By the time of this memory, all the monsters already knew just how dangerous the Phantoms were, especially the strongest among them.
However, hundreds of years ago, and even more so a thousand years ago, there were even fewer humans than there are now. In percentage terms, humans didn’t even make up 1% of all living creatures in the world.
A new Lord appeared more often than a K2-Phantom. Sure, becoming a Lord was significantly harder than becoming a K2-Phantom, but that was due to the enormous imbalance in numbers.
Humans couldn’t reproduce as quickly. Most of them had no powers at all, and the only base they had was the Citadel. The Bastions didn’t appear right away, and none of them were as significant as the Citadel.
So, it was no surprise that the Frost Dragons laughed when Gladius set out to destroy their entire clan single-handedly.
If all the other Second Rank Phantoms had come with him, their reaction would have been different. But they were certain that no matter how strong a Phantom was, even if it were Queen Elisa herself, a single Phantom could not be a match for all of them.
Ironically, only Adam, who was a mere spectator, realized what a mistake the Frost Dragons had made.
Drip. Drip. Drip.
Crimson drops fell from Gladius’s fingertips onto the ground as the guard’s body lay at his feet.
After the initial wave of shock, the guards standing on the towers assumed combat stances and leaped aside, soaring through the air.
Each of them wielded a different weapon, some a sword, an axe, a spear, or a pair of blades. The Frost Dragons were not the largest clan in terms of numbers, but each of them was an ancient monster that had weathered countless battles.
They had their own history, fighting style, and abilities that helped them achieve their numerous victories.
Any member of their clan was stronger and more experienced than an ordinary Lord. Other monsters feared and respected them. Only forces such as the Befallen Crown had the upper hand over them and could put pressure on them.
Perhaps that was why no one could believe what had just happened.
Gulp.
Kae’ra gulped as her face turned pale.
“F-Father, aren’t Second-Rank Phantoms supposed to be equal in power to the Lords?”
Laerdor narrowed his eyes as his aura grew stronger.
“Indeed, but I’ve heard that, just like the Lords, not all Second Rank Phantoms are equal. The problem is that there are so few of them that it’s hard to tell what’s a difference in level, what’s a unique trait, and what’s just luck.”
He clenched his fists.
“Either way, we’ve made our decision, and we have no other choice, especially not after he killed one of our own.”
Kae’ra narrowed her eyes as she looked at Gladius, who hadn’t taken a single step back after killing the guard.
“Do you think he might not be the only one?”
“No, that’s unlikely. I believe he came alone.”
“But… Why? I’ve heard that Queen Elisa is a wise ruler. It can’t be that she doesn’t understand that a single Phantom could never destroy an entire ancient clan!”
Laerdor shrugged as he stretched his arm forward.
With a bright flash, a massive spear with a long blade appeared in his grasp.
“Humans can be far more arrogant than even we monsters. That is one of their main weaknesses. That is precisely why they have always been, and will always be, two rungs down the food chain, even if there are a few strong warriors among them.”
Following their leader, the rest of the Forst Dragons, one by one, summoned their Arcs.
The fact that they did so was proof that they considered Gladius a worthy opponent.
Then again, what other choice did they have after he’d killed one of them?
Adam looked around. He sensed their powerful auras as he realized one thing:
“Incredible, only about a third of them are Lesser Lords. The rest are stronger. Their clan is actually full of powerful monsters. However…”
His eyes narrowed as he stared at Laerdor.
“I’m not entirely sure, but it seems there’s only one True Lord among them.”
Adam had faced the True Lords only a few times. As a K4-Phantom, it was difficult for him to accurately gauge their level.
After that, his gaze fell on Gladius, who was neither frightened nor excited.
In fact, he was bored.
“Gha…”
Gladius exhaled icy vapor, lifting his head to look at him.
“Why? Why do you guys always cause so much trouble? Weaklings like you just get in the way of our world.”
Kae’ra frowned as she clenched her fist, about to say something.
But before she could, her eyes widened in horror.
A pillar of purple aura burst forth from Gladius as the demon’s silhouette soared above the towers, viewing each dragon as nothing more than its dinner.
