Chapter 1987: Sword-Shaped Bombs
Chapter 1987: Sword-Shaped Bombs
The islands in the Gray Sea had always stayed in place. Thanks to their size and dense energy, they were not subject to the currents, allowing them to remain in the same locations for hundreds of years, just as they had from the very beginning.
However, external forces could affect an island, altering its appearance, shape, or even partially destroying it.
After all, the islands had been in the Gray Sea for thousands of years, and during that time, almost all of them had undergone significant changes, even the most remote islands located at the edge of the world.
Well, that wasn’t Breydar’s intention, but what he did to Island A215 will now remain with that place forever.
BLAST!
A shockwave spread across the Gray Sea, churning up waves. Aggressive gusts of wind swept through the area, leaving Breydar to observe the consequences of his decision.
From the very beginning, Island A215 had been a resource and a battlefield for him, one he could use to achieve victory.
If Adam hadn’t intervened in their battle, the destruction of Island A215 would have been Breydar’s final trump card, which he intended to use to kill Raoha and Luaxa.
He planned to escape using his Arc, and while the squad clan was in disarray, he would have blown up the island.
Thus, the explosion and the power of the crystals intended for the Veiled Souls Clan members ultimately fell solely on Adam. Also, Breydar used his Arc to destroy the black spear.
In fact, if he hadn’t done so, the black spear would have already split into several other spears and gained enough power to inflict a critical wound on Breydar. He managed to avoid that.
But… He still had one question to which he didn’t know the answer.
“Adam…” Breydar muttered, coming to a halt in midair next to Island A216. “Can you really survive even this?”
Breydar could have kept running, but he saw no point in it.
Even if Adam had survived, in Breydar’s opinion, he must have sustained horrific injuries. In that case, it would be better for Breydar to kill Adam so he would never pursue him again.
Sure, there was another possibility – that Adam had survived the explosion unscathed. But Breydar didn’t believe it.
He was willing to stake all his experience, and even his life, on the fact that it was impossible.
The force of that explosion would have been enough to kill Raoha and the bearded man: they were both Viscounts, and Adam was roughly at that same power level.
Whooooooosh!
Gusts of wind swept past Breydar as the dust veil covering Island A215 gradually dissipated, revealing the rocky surface.
His eyes narrowed as he looked at the massive crater at the very center of the island, which extended to the very edges in several concentric rings.
Sharp rocks and gray crystals, now devoid of energy, lay scattered on the ground, reduced to mere debris after the explosion.
Over time, wind currents, ocean currents, and monsters imbued with dense energy would reshape this island and restore it to its former state. But for now, the island had been virtually destroyed by the aftermath of their battle.
Breydar’s eyes narrowed as his gaze fell on one particular thing.
On the right side of the island lay a dark cocoon. From time to time, it trembled before disintegrating into a multitude of black specks.
Step. Step. Step.
Adam got up from the ground, walking slowly forward.
His right arm was limp, dangling with every step he took – it was broken in several places and covered in severe burns. His back and right side were in a similar condition.
But he had managed to protect his legs, head, and left arm.
Breydar bit his lip.
“I see… He used all the Dark Energy he had and sacrificed the right half to survive. I’m sure, in addition to the Dark Energy, he also used his threads and perhaps his own energy. Right now, his aura is too unstable for me to draw any conclusions.”
Then, he nodded deeply and headed toward Island A216.
Breydar knew that Adam would follow him.
‘He came to kill me. He won’t stop even now. Well, I’ll give him a chance to try. Whatever the outcome – it depends entirely on him.’
To Breydar, everything was clear.
Now that Adam was severely wounded, he had to kill him right here and now.
Moreover, since Adam’s aura was now weaker than it had been a minute ago, he could do it without drawing much attention.
“If that really was the aura of a Second-Rank Phantom, their battle should have already begun by now. At the very least, they’re in negotiations that are unlikely to lead to anything other than a fierce battle. The main thing is that Adam’s aura doesn’t draw too much attention, and then I’ll be able to avoid trouble.”
Tap.
Breydar landed on Island A216. Unlike Island A215, where there were only rocks and energy crystals, this place was full of trees, vines, and tall grass. It was a local jungle in the middle of the endless grim sea.
“Agh…” Breydar sighed deeply, leaning against a tree.
He could sense the auras of other monsters here, but they were all too weak to pose a threat to him.
They wouldn’t dare attack him, even considering that he was currently weakened. After all, he had expended a great deal of energy defeating the three lords of the Veiled Souls Clan.
“Come on, Adam,” Breydar rasped. “I know you’re following me. You’re not the type to flee the battlefield because of your wounds and head for a safe place.”
In fact, what Breydar was suggesting was the best decision Adam could make. He needed to leave the Gray Sea and head to the Citadel, or any other place where he could at least get some rest.
But…
“Huh.”
Breydar knew that wouldn’t happen.
Throughout his long life, he had encountered countless arrogant monsters and Phantoms who were overly confident in their abilities.
“None of them were particularly remarkable, well… except for a few exceptions. Those bastards could make the worst decisions and take constant risks, yet still come out on top. Adam is clearly one of them. However, even for them, there was always only one outcome.”
Adam’s aura – Breydar could feel it. He knew Adam was near the island.
‘Now…’ Breydar muttered to himself. ‘Now he’s going to strike the island. Fine, I’m ready for this. No matter what you’ve got in store, I’ll be able to counter you and—’
SLASH!
Suddenly, Breydar’s eyes widened in disbelief.
At that very moment, the massive crystal blade sliced through Island A216, leaving a deep rift right down the middle of it.
Crack! Crack!
Two more crystal blades crashed down onto the island from above, plunging into the cracks radiating from the rift, widening them and allowing them to proceed further.
Breydar jerked his head up just in time to see four more giant blades slice through the gray clouds and plunge into the ground. The trees and plants on the island were no match for the sharp blades.
SLASH! SLASH!
Two more blades, suspended in midair, left deep gashes on the surface with wide slashes before beginning to spin and plunge like drills into the depths of the central rift.
Breydar’s eyes darted from side to side. He tried to figure out what was happening here, until his gaze settled on Adam, who was hovering off to the side.
His wounds hadn’t gone away, but one arm was enough for him to control the crystal blades, which continued to rain down on the island, filling it like a swarm of needles.
“What…?” Breydar blinked, confused. “What is he doing? There’s no way he can’t sense my aura. He must know where I am. Damn it, he could just look my way and spot me!’
CRACK!
Another crystal blade crashed down right in front of him.
Chunks of earth flew toward Breydar, forcing him to shield himself with his hands from the pebbles.
He lowered his hands as he saw his reflection in the crystal blade. The blade wasn’t a monolith. It consisted of hundreds of tiny fragments connected by energy lines that pulsed from time to time like shimmering glass.
At that moment, Breydar’s eyes widened – he realized what Adam was about to do.
“NO!” Breydar roared like a wild beast. He turned, glaring at Adam. “Don’t you dare do that, you bastard!”
Only now did Adam turn his gaze toward Breydar. His eyes were exhausted. He had little strength left, but more than enough to finish his work.
“I’ve already told you this, Breydar…”
Adam muttered, his dry lips barely moving.
“I came here to kill you. I took on this mission, so I’ll see it through…”
Tap.
The last crystal blade crashed down onto the island.
After that, the blades began to tremble violently and glow brightly.
Breydar knew what this meant – he’d done the same thing with Island A215.
“DAMN IT!!!” Breydar exclaimed, using all the energy he had to create a protective barrier around himself.
With the next flash, each of the more than twenty giant crystal blades exploded, obliterating Island A216.
