Chapter 601: The Place Where Everything Began And Ended
After Tigrath’s defeat, Alex, Fran, and Finn could finally take a rest.
The Dryads thanked them for helping them defeat the monsters that had been a pain in their bum for the past few years.
Sylvara didn’t hesitate to absorb Tigrath’s entire corpse, as if fearing the latter would miraculously rise up from the dead.
She thanked Alex’s group before she bade them goodbye, rushing as she needed to hibernate for a few days to fully absorb the White Tiger’s power.
Alex and Finn were exhausted, and only Fran was brimming with strength and energy. In fact, the two young men could hardly walk after the adrenaline wore off.
"C-Can you put me down?" Finn asked Francesca, who had picked him up from the ground and volunteered to carry him to the grave of the Lonely Fairy. "I can walk by myself."
"No, you can’t," Francesa replied with a smile. "If you can walk by yourself, you can free yourself from my hold. So, go ahead and prove me wrong."
The corner of Finn’s lips twitched. The Dryad had wrapped her vines around him. How could he possibly escape in his weakened state?
Seeing his helplessness, Francesca giggled and lifted him like a prize. She even winked at the other Dryads, who gave her looks of envy.
Dyrads didn’t usually interact with the men of other races. But they did appreciate brave and bold individuals. Of course, good looks were also one of their criteria, and Finn had met all the requirements.
Alex chuckled because Finn looked like he had eaten a fly.
"Finn, true men allow ladies to carry them," Alex said with confidence.
"Don’t lump me with you!" Finn shot back. "Walk on your own feet and stop bothering my sister!"
He glared at the young man who obviously enjoyed being carried by his sister. He even looked so relax, as if it was the most natural thing in the world. Usually, it was the other way around!
"Is this some kind of human trend?" Dewdrop asked Poppy.
"How should I know?" Poppy shrugged. "I’ve never left the forest."
The two Fairies looked at Alex, who had a big smile on his face while being carried by Fran.
The two of them looked at Dim Dim, who was currently perched on top of a small shield, to ask for its opinion.
The little bun averted its gaze. Clearly, it didn’t want to be asked about Alex’s preferences.
Now that they no longer needed to avoid danger, they headed directly to the grave that they were looking for.
It took them nearly three hours to get there because chasing Tigrath had taken them far from their original route.
For some reason, the other Dryads also followed them to the grave. It’s like they were escorting the Heroes that helped them defeat the two Boss Monsters.
Due to their presence, Alex’s group didn’t encounter any hostile monsters. In fact, the red blinking dots on Alex’s map moved away from them. They seemed to sense the danger the Dyrads presented as they moved as a group.
When they finally arrived at a clearing, Fran couldn’t help but draw a deep breath.
They were looking at a field of flowers. At the center of it all were five graves.
Even Alex felt a lump in his throat when confronted with this scene.
The Dryads didn’t step on the flower field. Instead, they simply formed a perimeter around it, guarding their guests from any hostile forces that might disturb them while they paid their respect to the departed.
Poppy and Dewdrop teared up a bit after visiting the grave that they hadn’t seen for many years.
The fairies were born from the essence of the Lonely Fairy, and it should have been their duty to care for the grave for as long as they lived.
"I’m fine now, Fran," Alex said. "I can walk now."
Fran nodded and helped Alex stand up on his own. The two then walked hand in hand to the graves that had been weathered by time. Still, they were well cared for. There were even flowers placed before the tombstones.
"It feels strange to finally return to this place..." Fran muttered before kneeling down to lightly touch the grave of Fran the fairy.
However, Alex saw her hand tremble as she touched the grave that held nothing. Fairies didn’t leave any bodies behind when they died, for their bodies belonged to the world, and they would return to it after breathing their last.
Alex then glanced at the grave right beside Fran’s and read its epitaph
"Alex loved Fran with all of his heart. He promised that when he reincarnated, he would be a fairy so he could be with her until they grew old together."
And just like what he had seen in the dungeon, the small word "liar" was still there, making him feel a little complicated.
The young man then knelt and read Fran’s epitaph.
"Fran, a fairy of gentle light and unyielding will.
With her beloved Alex, she defied the Demon Lord and saved the world.
A guardian in legend and forever, the Queen of Hide-and-Seek."
He then glanced at his beloved and saw tears already running down her face. Alex reached out to hug her and patted her back.
The young man wasn’t aware that the memories of her last days as a fairy once again appeared inside her head. The loneliness, the sadness, the helplessness—all the emotions she had endured for hundreds of years once again resurfaced.
"It’s already in the past, Fran," Alex said softly while still hugging her. "We’re together now, and that’s all that matters."
Fran nodded before burying her head in Alex’s chest. She couldn’t stop the tears from falling and didn’t have plans to stop them.
She cried, and cried, and cried.
Poppy and Dewdrop didn’t know why Fran was crying so much. But for some reason, seeing her like this made them feel closer to her.
Dim Dim was also tearing up, easily affected by the emotions of its friends.
After hundreds of years, Fran and Alex returned to the place where their relationship had begun and ended.
The only thing that they had left was their legacy.
Still, the world had no idea that somewhere in the Shadow Forest, the bodies of the Heroes who had fought for the peace of the world were buried, forgotten by men and not even mentioned in history books.
