Chapter 604: A Very Greedy Person
Chapter 604: A Very Greedy Person
Warmth bloomed in Alex’s chest, bringing a smile upon his lips as he woke up and saw Fran’s sleeping face beside him. He didn’t want to wake her, so he just looked at her.
This was his first time seeing Fran asleep. She looked so at peace that he didn’t dare make a sound or sudden movement.
Had he wanted to wake her, his lips would’ve already made their way to her cheeks. For now, he could only observe and enjoy the sweet sight.
Thirty minutes later, the young lady showed signs of waking up. Upon opening her eyes, she was met with Alex’s tender gaze.
"Good morning," Alex said with a smile. "you slept extremely well."
"Good morning," Fran replied before ducking under the blanket, seemingly embarrassed about something.
Alex waited until the young lady peeked out of the blanket and looked at him.
"How long have you been staring at my face?" Fran asked. "Don’t tell me you’ve been doing it for hours?"
"Long enough to understand how lucky I am to be your boyfriend," Alex answered before planting a kiss on her forehead. "I love you Fran. I love you very much."
Fran pouted but still returned Alex’s good morning kiss by also kissing his cheek. Feeling a little playful, the young man cupped her face and gently kissed her lips for two seconds before pulling back.
Thinking that it wasn’t enough, he gave her three quick pecks before finally pulling away. He was tempted to do more, but being active this early in the morning was not a good thing, especially since there was a little bun sleeping inside the tent with them.
He glanced at the basket by the corner of the tent. Dim Dim lay inside, still fast asleep.
The little bun seemed to have drank a lot last night. It was still stuck in dreamland and showed no signs of waking up anytime soon.
Alex decided to let Dim Dim sleep for a bit while he helped Fran cook their breakfast.
When they left the tent, they realized that the fairies were already awake and flying over the flower field.
Unexpectedly, there was a small vine-weaved basket brimming with fruits beside their tent. The Dryad had picked those fruits for their guests, a gesture Alex and Fran appreciated.
"I’ll cook some oats," Fran said. "These fruits will go well with it."
"I agree." Alex nodded. "I’ll see if your brother is awake."
He then walked toward Finn’s tent. But as soon as he opened the tent flap and saw what was inside, he shut it immediately.
Alex then returned to Fran’s side.
"Finn is still fast asleep," Alex lied, lyingly, like a liar. "He looks like he will sleep till noon."
Fran blinked. Her brother was usually an early riser. "Let’s wake him up when we are done making breakfast."
"No! We should leave him alone!"
Seeing his girlfriend’s confusion and concern, Alex hastily added, "I mean he must be exhausted after last night. There’s no harm in letting Finn and Dim Dim sleep in since we are not in a rush."
"Okay." Fran nodded, relieved that Alex was so considerate of Finn. "We’ll just set aside their portions so they have something to eat once they wake up."
"Sounds like a plan."
"Mmm."
Now that he had convinced Fran not to bother Finn for a while, he stole a glance at the tent in the distance.
He had no idea what kind of reaction Finn would have after waking up, but he wouldn’t want Fran to be there when it happened.
After having breakfast, the two of them worked together to clean the graves. They used water and cloth to wipe the tombstones clean. They couldn’t use soap since it might harm the flowers around them, so they took a while to finish cleaning everything.
The Fairies wanted to help them, but Fran asked them for a favor.
"I’ll leave the cleaning of the graves in your hands once we leave the forest, so please allow us to do this on our own this time."
The Fairies thought the dwarf had a point, so they agreed to leave them be. When Fran and Alex were done cleaning, she picked up flowers and placed them over the graves. She then took out some incense and lit it before clasping her hands to pray.
Alex prayed right beside her and thanked whoever made it possible for him and Fran to reunite in this lifetime.
His life had been nothing but surprises as of late. Sometimes, he wondered if Lily and Cupid tying him up and sending him to Arcana via cannon was part of someone’s grand design.
He no longer thought of Arcana as a game. Everyone here was alive and living their lives to the fullest.
Alex understood that he had changed many things and couldn’t help but feel anxious about the butterfly effect. He had altered the plot. More and more things were deviating from what he knew.
But after gaining more loved ones he feared to lose, his only path was to grow stronger.
Strong enough to protect them.
Strong enough to ensure they wouldn’t have a bad ending.
Alex couldn’t help but wonder if he was being too greedy.
He already had Lavinia, Latifa, Evangeline, and Fran—four wonderful ladies who showed him care and love.
They should have been enough... and yet...
"Hah... I’m such a greedy person," Alex muttered. "Why am I like this?"
He had accidentally said that out loud. Fran did not immediately respond, and he took that to mean she hadn’t heard his confession.
"Yes, you’re a very greedy person," Fran replied after finishing her prayer. "But you’re only human. That’s your nature. However, know this: when your greed has gone overboard, I will be there... to give you a good wake up punch, okay?"
Alex’s body flinched, knowing by Fran’s tone that she meant it. She was sometimes playful, but whenever she got serious, she truly was serious.
"Okay." Alex nodded. "When I get too greedy, punch me all you want. I won’t defend myself."
"I hope you remember those words," Fran replied before standing up. "I’m going to take a bath. Poppy and Dewdrop said there’s a spring nearby."
"Take your time," Alex said, still kneeling.
Fran was shy, so Alex refrained from suggesting that they take a bath together. If he were to take a risk, he might just get kicked by a Rank 4 Dwarven Berserker.
A few minutes after Fran left, Alex walked back to their tent to see if Dim Dim was awake.
The little bun was still sleeping, so he didn’t wake it up.
Suddenly, he sensed some sound coming from the other tent, where Finn, Francesca, and two more Dryads slept.
He heard Finn and Francesca talking with each other, but their voices were too low for him to catch what they were saying.
Since he had no intention of deliberately eavesdropping, he decided to back away for now. He believed that after an hour or two, Finn and the Dryads would finally leave their tent.
Although Alex had no intention of breaching his future brother-in-law’s privacy, he still wanted to see the other’s reaction, so he made sure not to stray far from the camp as he awaited Fran’s return.
