Chapter 638: What You Need Right Now Is Courage
"What’s wrong?" Alex looked at Chuck who just returned to their inn. "You look like you and Princess Xenia had just broken up."
The two of them were currently in Renard’s room. They just felt that Mr. I-have-trust-issues needed some company right now, so they visited him.
The corner of Chuck’s lips twitched because his roommate came awfully close to the thoughts swirling inside his mind right now.
"Alex, you’re a seer, right?" Chuck asked.
"I guess?" Alex subconsciously took a step back.
His friend’s gaze looked incredibly serious.
"Then have you seen my future?" Chuck asked. "Did you see anything related to me in your future sight?"
"Why do you ask me this question all of a sudden?"
"Just answer the question please."
Alex frowned. Truth be told, Chuck only appeared in the game of ELO as one of those troublemaker side characters in the background.
He would be there one moment, and then gone the next. He always kept a happy-go-lucky attitude. As a player back then, Alex simply thought he was an interesting character.
But now he knew that behind Chuck’s smile was pain he thoroughly hid inside his heart. He just made himself look happy, so the people around him, as well as his brother Caspian, wouldn’t know the burdens he was carrying in his heart.
Princess Xenia was one of the characters who can be romanced in the game by the player, and Alex would be lying if he said that he didn’t try her romance route.
In that route, the main obstacle was Chuck. The two had a mysterious relationship in Princess Xenia’s route. Sometimes, Alex even wondered if they were in love with each other or not.
There were times when they genuinely cared for each other, and times when they felt like letting go.
Alex even genuinely felt that the two really had feelings for each other, but they didn’t have the courage to fight for it.
Princess Xenia’s route had five endings.
Two happy endings, and three bad ones.
The first happy route was when she gained happiness with the protagonist.
The second one, to Alex’s surprise, was when she and Chuck truly became lovers.
The first bad ending was when she personally killed Chuck after being corrupted by the Demon Worshipers.
The fourth bad ending was the protagonist’s death in her hands during the final battle of her arc.
And the last bad ending was when Princess Xenia killed Chuck before killing herself.
Since she couldn’t gain happiness in this life, she prayed that she would find happiness in her next life with the person she loved.
Alex, who had seen those endings, couldn’t possibly remain silent.
Also, he could feel it. Despite appearances, Chuck and Princess Xenia really cared for each other.
So with this knowledge in mind, he rested both of his hands on Chuck’s shoulder.
"Chuck, what do you feel about the princess?" Alex asked.
"... Why are you asking the same question my father asked me a while ago?" Chuck asked back. "Did you see it?"
"I didn’t see what you and your father talked about earlier," Alex replied. "However, I do know that what you need right now is courage. Courage to say what you feel about the princess."
Renard sat not far from the two, so he raised his head and looked in their direction. He wondered if he should leave to give the two of them some privacy.
But deep inside, he was also very curious about what Chuck felt about the princess.
Among the men in their club, he was the only one who was still single... single by choice.
"Must I really give the answer to this question?" Chuck asked. He had been thinking about his relationship with Princess Xenia since he had been dropped off near the inn by his father’s carriage.
Now that Alex was asking the same thing, he felt like everyone was pressuring him to make a choice. And that didn’t feel comfortable.
"Chuck, your feelings and Princess Xenia’s feelings are mutual," Alex answered. "If you run away from this, I can assure you that you will regret it for the rest of your life."
"You sound as if you already know what’s going to happen to me," Chuck replied in a heated voice. "What do you know about my relationship with Xenia?"
"Isn’t it a contractual relationship?" Alex held Chuck’s gaze, which made the latter’s eyes widen in shock.
"Did she tell you?" Chuck glared and shoved Alex’s hands that were resting on his shoulders. "How did you know that we’re in a contractual relationship?"
"Do you really think that Princess Xenia will casually tell other people about this secret?" Alex asked in contempt. "Only the two of you know of it. If you think she told me about your relationship, then you really don’t know how loyal and trustworthy she is.
"Of course, she didn’t tell me. I knew it because I’m a Seer. Remember? Why are you glaring at me? Aren’t you the one who asked me if I saw your future?"
Chuck averted his gaze while clenching his fists.
"I’ll just talk to myself for a bit," Alex said as he walked over to the couch and sat down. "Whatever you hear is something that didn’t really happen."
The young man then leaned on the couch and closed his eyes.
"Once upon a time, in a land far away, there lived a noble named Noble C," Alex narrated. "Noble C had suffered under the hands of his stepmother, who hated him and his mother. Then one day, Noble C’s father called him into the office.
"You’re going to become the fiance of Princess X. If you agree, I will do everything in my power to find a cure for your mother. Since Noble C loved his mom, he agreed to this condition.
"When Noble C met Princess X for the first time, he felt his heart beating so fast inside his chest."
"Liar," Chuck interjected. "Noble C didn’t feel his heart beating fast inside his chest when he met Princess X."
Alex scoffed. "Can the peanut gallery not interfere?"
"Dim Dim!" Dim Dim also glared at Chuck. In its hand was a small bag of potato chips. Clearly, it was enjoying the story Alex was telling them.
"Where was I? Oh yeah, Princess X and Noble C talked about themselves. But since that was the first time they met each other, the only thought in their head was ’she’s beautiful’ and ’he looks decent.’
"Since Princess X was very curious about her fiance, she had invited him to many gatherings within the palace. Slowly but surely, the distance between them grew closer."
"Awwwww." Dim Dim sighed happily before casually biting the potato chip it was holding, creating a crisp sound.
"Then it happened," Alex said, using a voice filled with suspense. "The nobles of the kingdom who wanted to gain influence and clout among their peers decided to band together to scheme. They want to break the engagement between Noble C and Princess X.
"However, as long as the two of them muster the courage to tell each other how they feel, the evil nobles’ scheme would be useless. Noble C and Princess X wouldn’t be separated from each other.
"Unfortunately, even if the heart was willing, the mind was weak. Princess X wanted Noble C to stay by her side, but Noble C didn’t have the courage to admit what he truly felt. In the end, the scheming nobles succeeded and their engagement was broken.
"Princess X was royalty. She understood from the start that she was the King’s pawn for diplomacy. A tool to help their kingdom prosper even more. She was then engaged to a prince of another country, but she didn’t live happily ever after.
"She lived a very unhappy life. Because of that, she returned to the kingdom to see Noble C one last time before she got married. That was when he saw Noble C having a tryst with Maid M..."
"Wait a minute!" Chuck interjected. "What the hell are you talking about?!"
Alex sighed before glancing at Dim Dim.
"There is an eyewitness who told me about a certain whip play that Noble C enjoyed as a way to punish himself for the choices he made. Let’s just call this person, Brave Dim Dim.
"After seeing this betrayal, Princess X finally closed off her heart. But before leaving forever, she sent a letter to Noble C, asking to meet one last time. She told him that she loved him, but because he didn’t feel the same way, she lost hope and decided to find happiness in her next life.
"Without any warning, she stabbed Noble C’s heart, giving him a quick death. After laying him down on the ground, she laid down beside him and stabbed her own heart to kill herself. As life faded away from her body, she reached out to hold his hand one last time.
"This ending could have been avoided if Noble C only had a bit more courage to truly say what he truly felt. The true culprit why people suffer in life is often misunderstanding.
"People can’t really read a person’s heart. No one can know what they’re thinking unless it’s said out loud. At the end of the day, Noble C’s fate was decided the moment he held his silence."
Dim Dim glared at Chuck and pointed at him while still holding a potato chip.
"Dim Dim!" Dim Dim shouted angrily as if chastising Chuck for not being decisive when it came to love.
Renard remained quiet because he could also relate from the story that had just been finished.
’A little courage, huh...’ Renard thought with a sigh.
A moment later, Alex picked up the angry little bun and walked out of the room. However, he stopped just as he was about to pass by Chuck.
"It’s about time you stop running, Chuck," Alex said. "Because if you continue to run away, the happiness running after you will get tired."
After saying those words, Alex finally left the room, leaving heavy silence behind his wake.
