Chapter 712: The Singing King [Part 2]
“Congratulations, Alex!” Professor Arianna hugged the living sh*t out of the young man as soon as he returned to the contestant’s room. “I’ve always believed in you!”
The corner of Heather’s lips twitched as she stared at the Professor. After all, the latter had planned to knock Alex unconscious to ensure he couldn’t participate in the Singing King competition!
Fortunately, they mysteriously lost consciousness before they could succeed in their plan, allowing Alex to win the tournament.
“You were really amazing back there, Alex!” Astrea congratulated the young man with a smile. “That song almost sent me to heaven.”
“Um… congratulations,” Lapiz said, trying to overcome her shyness a bit. “Your song was wonderful, and your singing voice was really good.”
“Thank you both,” Alex replied. “Didn’t I keep on telling you girls that there’s nothing to worry about? This win was already in the bag before I even set foot on the stage.”
“Congratulations, Alex! You really are our singing division’s trump card!”
“Congratulations, Singing King!”
“Wooooh!”
The other representatives of the musical department also came to congratulate Alex. Hearing all of their congratulatory remarks felt wonderful. However, the praise that Astrea and Lapiz gave him was still the best among them.
“Astrea, please do your best,” Alex said in a serious tone. “Don’t be nervous. Just sing like you always do, and let your song captivate everyone.”
“Yes, Sir!” Astrea playfully saluted Alex. “I won’t disappoint you. By the way, did you know? The winners of the tournament will be paraded across the streets of Everdawn City. Since you are the Singing King, I must make sure that your partner will also be from Frieden Academy!”
Astrea was truly fired up, not knowing that her earnest determination made Alex’s heart skip a beat.
Of course, he knew that Astrea didn’t mean anything else about wanting to become his partner in the parade. Still, he hoped that the person who would stand by his side at that moment was indeed this lucky girl blessed by the deities of the world.
Meanwhile, somewhere in the coliseum…
“This cannot be… just how?!” Professor Matilda looked at the ingredients she had used to concoct the potion she made Alex drink. No matter how she looked at it, she had brewed the potion perfectly.
This meant that the result that happened earlier shouldn’t have happened.
“There must be a mistake… wait. That fox. Could she have betrayed me?!” Professor Matilda narrowed her eyes.
She was referring to none other than Lady Evarisse, who said that she personally saw Alex drink the potion.
Professor Matilda believed her words back then. But what if she lied? Foxes were known to be mischievous and sly creatures. She might have set all of this up just to make her look like a fool in public!
“I’ll deal with that fox later,” Professor Matilda said through gritted teeth before taking out another potion from her storage ring. “I still have one more Potion of Reverse Voice. Now that we lost the Singing King position, we can’t afford to lose the Singing Queen position either!”
The Professor hurriedly pulled some strings to have the potion delivered to Astrea’s waiting room.
There was still a one-hour break before the Singing Queen competition started, so she still had plenty of time to sabotage the singer for Frieden Academy!
Several minutes later, an elf wearing a staff uniform glanced at her surroundings and entered one of the dressing rooms.
Without any hesitation, she placed the potion on the top of the vanity desk and left a letter behind.
The letter said…
“I hope this potion will help you sing better – From one of your fans!”
Although the staff didn’t think that Astrea would drink a very suspicious potion, this was the only method she could think of without resorting to violence.
The last thing she wanted to happen was to create a scandal that would tarnish the reputation of the Kingdom of Faelarun.
A few minutes after she left, Alex and Astrea walked down the hallway.
“Good luck with your competition, Astrea,” Alex said. “Remember, sing with all your heart.”
“Yes, I will!” Astrea promised and entered the room with a smile.
The young man still needed to prepare for the Battle Choir, which would take place after the Singing Queen competition ended.
Although there was still plenty of time, Alex wanted to rest a bit so that he could listen to Astrea’s singing later.
When he entered his own dressing room, he headed straight for the mirror to look at his handsome reflection.
“Um? What’s this?” Alex blinked when he saw the familiar potion on top of the vanity. “A potion and a letter?”
The young man read the letter, and soon, a smug smile appeared on his face.
“It seems that my fans really care about me,” Alex said. “Well then. Bottom’s up!”
With that, the young man chugged the Reverse Voice Potion like a pro, leaving not a single drop behind.
“That sure hits the spot,” Alex said with a smile. “I wonder if I can find the recipe for this potion. It’s really good stuff!”
He then suddenly remembered that he had completely forgotten about Dim Dim, so he left his room to head to the stands to check on the little bun for a short while.
A few minutes later, Astrea left her room and knocked on the door of Alex’s room. There was something she wanted to ask, but hearing no answer from the other side of the door, even after waiting for a while, she decided to open it.
A quick glance was enough to tell her that Alex wasn’t inside. But just to be sure, she headed to the bathroom and knocked on the door as well.
“I guess he went out,” Astrea muttered after not hearing any reply from the bathroom.
The young lady finally left the room after that, deciding to look for Professor Arienna to have her question answered.
Then, as if waiting for that moment, the staff returned and saw Astrea leaving Alex’s room.
She nodded at the young lady, who returned her greeting with a smile.
When the staff was certain that the coast was finally clear, she entered the room and checked if the potion bottle was empty.
Seeing not a single drop left, she managed to sigh in relief. Fortunately, she had accomplished her mission.
‘Time to inform the Professor,’ the staff thought while hurriedly leaving the room.
When Professor Matilda heard that the mission was a success, she gave the staff a pouch of gold coins as hush money.
“I’m sorry, Missy,” Professor Matilda said while clenching her fists. “The Singing Queen must belong to Faelarun!”
While she did say that she was sorry, she didn’t feel any tinge of guilt at all. In fact, she felt relief because she would finally be able to rectify her mistake of trusting Lady Evarisse, thinking they were on the same side!
With a spring in her step, Professor Matilda headed back to the coliseum to join the rest of her people.
She was already looking forward to the continuation of the tournament, as well as the fate that would befall the pitiful girl… who had all the luck in the world.
