Chapter 1062: Frustrated Hero
Chapter 1062: Frustrated Hero
The dinner ended in an hour, and after having dessert, they left the restaurant.
Jessica didn't know that Rudy was leaving with Eric, so she waited for him in the car, but as soon as she saw Rebecca getting into Eleanor's car, she understood everything.
Of course, she was upset, but she wasn't going to throw a tantrum.
Eric and Rudy stayed behind since Eric was having a technical issue in paying the bill online, so Rudy helped him and left the restaurant.
Rudy felt guilty for not informing Jessica beforehand and he was ready to apologize to her since he had broken his promise. He hurriedly made his way out. However, as soon as he spotted Jessica getting into Eleanor's car, she stopped and stared at her.
He was genuinely surprised to know that Jessica didn't cause a ruckus, but for some reason, he felt sad.
'I thought for sure Jessica would…. Wait…' Rudy rubbed his head and muttered, "I have only known Jessica for the last few days, so how do I know what she will do and won't?"
Eric patted Rudy's shoulder from the back as he caught up to him and asked, "What's wrong?"
"Nothing. They left just now," Rudy replied.
"Who was driving?" Eric asked curiously.
"I am not sure, but I think it was umm… Yelena."
"Yeah, that's good. Mom seemed tired, so it was a good move." Eric walked past Rudy after saying, "I will take the car out."
'Is it okay for me to call her that?' Rudy asked himself. 'She didn't look old… in fact, she looked younger than Jessica, who is in her twenties. Even if the age difference between Yelena and me is 3 years or something, I don't think I should refer to her as an aunt.'
Rudy glanced at Eric and wondered, "Why is he calling her aunt? Out of respect? And… to be honest, Eleanor and Yelena looked kind of… similar. If I have to say, Yelena looked awfully similar to Erika."
Rudy's eyes widened in surprise as a thought crossed his mind. "Could it be that Yelena is Eleanor's sister?"
The age difference between Eleanor and Yelena was too much for Rudy to think of them as sisters. While in truth, Yelena was even younger than Eric and Erika.
Eric brought the car to Rudy and rolled down the window.
"Are you coming or waiting for me to kidnap you?" he said with a grin on his face.
Rudy softly chuckled and sat in the passenger seat beside Eric.
"You look creepy when you grin like that. Never do it in front of the media or they will label you as a villain."
"Oh, I would make a great villain."
Eric took a long way back home, which could take up to three hours, but Rudy didn't ask anything about it. He knew Eric wanted to talk to him about something and he expected it to be about the same topic as earlier— The New World Order.
Once they were on the highway, Eric set the car on cruise mode and reclined his chair a little.
"This is so fucking exhausting!" he yawned.
Rudy raised his brow and asked, "What, driving?"
"No."
"Then?"
SIGH!
Eric let out a frustrated sigh and muttered, "Everything. I am tired of all the bullshit."
"..." Rudy realized that the situation was worse than he thought.
"What happened, though? Talk to me," Rudy asked calmly.
"Being a hero is exhausting. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy slaying monsters and saving people, but that just is not it. Everyone who went into the towers has all the rights to be a hero. Yes, the ranking system among the heroes was needed, but it should have ended that.
Why do I have to deal with someone's personal and public matters? I became a hero to save people, not to oppress them. Why is the hero organization so focused on making the heroes look like bad guys? They are making us their enemy."
"What happened exactly? Is this about what we discussed this noon?"
"No." Eric shook his head. "That is still pending."
"..."
"Do you remember when someone came to my house when we were on the call?"
"Yeah." Rudy nodded.
"They were the officials from the hero organization."
"Oh. What did they want?"
"Well, a team of officials died in a fire explosion today and ironically, they happened to be the five people who came to our school today."
"...!"
"And?" Rudy's curiosity was at its peak.
"They think they were attacked by someone and want me to solve the matter. Like…" Eric fixed his reclining seat and pressed the accelerator. "They didn't even let me decide if I want to work in this case or not.
I am not a detective. I am a hero! And they showed up at my house! That's one place that's off limits! They crossed the red line! I am a top hero, not their servant! So why am I stuck here, obeying their orders?!"
Eric was frustrated, but it wasn't his usual rant. He seemed pissed, as though he was done playing the hero.
"Can't you just say no to them?"
"No."
"Why? They can't force you to do something you don't want to."
"They will slowly get rid of the heroes who don't join the new world order, and they are simply looking for an excuse to excommunicate them."
"But you are one of the main heroes. They can't afford to lose you, right?"
"They can't, which is why they are doing this. This is their way of telling me to join their side or they would make my life a living hell."
"Can't you just kill them all?"
As soon as Rudy suggested that, Eric pressed the brake so hard that the car stopped.
Rudy gulped down nervously and continued, "I don't mean literally. Why don't you do the same thing as them? You even have proof. Let's just submit that drive to the president and everything will be taken care of."
"I can't." Eric slammed his hands on the wheel. "A war will happen and thousands of innocent people will die. Ultimately, the heroes would win since there's no way any weapon can stop the top heroes."
"You have to—!"
BANG!
Suddenly, the car was hit from the side and it fell into the valley with Eric and Rudy still inside it.
