Evolution: From Little Devil to Devil Empress

Chapter 396: Remnant Soul

Chapter 396: Remnant Soul

Liora felt a pair of gentle hands wrap around her neck from her back, while two soft things landed along her spine.

A hot breath landed on her ears, as several overlapping, seductive whispers reached them.

In the time it took Liora to wake up from the pink mist’s influence, a silhouette had appeared and hugged her from behind unknowingly.

Liora did not suffer any damage or harm.

Yet, as she felt herself come into contact with the enemy, a hot flame arose within her body, just like it had done when she faced the pink mist within the Earth Devil’s soul space.

Perhaps because the mist was only the remaining power while the silhouette was its caster, the feeling was several times more intense and difficult to recover from.

Fortunately, Liora had already realized something was amiss and reacted quickly.

Her demonic energy erupted and struck her surroundings, trying to injure or at least push the other person off of her.

However, the result was surprising.

Instead of being pushed back, large fractures appeared along the figure of the woman behind her before she shattered like broken glass.

The moment Liora succeeded in suppressing the influence in her body, the shadows in one of the room’s corners writhed and burst out.

A pink mist formed out of nowhere and spread through the room, while a familiar figure emerged from within.

"Hehe.", Assira hid her happy smile behind her hand as soon as she appeared.

"My friends, what’s the point of fighting and killing?"

"Can’t we all just work together to get out of this place? Why do we have to kill each other?", Assira shook her head and spoke with regret, staring at the corpses scattered across the floor with faint disappointment.

Liora did not respond to her words.

While doing her best to suppress the side-effects of the earlier confrontation, she glanced at the Earth Devil in her hand and casually tossed him aside.

By now, his consciousness had mostly been wiped out, and he no longer served as a threat.

A dumbfounded look remained etched across his face that was completely devoid of any intelligence—a result of the pink mist’s previous eruption.

Liora did not kill him.

Doing so would violate the Devil Contract. Most importantly, she had more important things to deal with.

After she got rid of this weight, Liora turned to Assira and sized her up, secretly wondering what her purpose was.

She knew that this woman didn’t hold any malicious intent at the moment. Otherwise, the figure "attacking" her would not have been a mere illusion, but Assira’s real body.

If she truly wished to oppose her, she would have taken the initiative in the fight by doing this.

Based on just this alone, Liora could see that this woman had another purpose for appearing at this time and speaking up.

Sure enough, the next moment, Assira followed up on her previous words and confirmed her suspicions.

As she stared at the Archdevil Technique lying on the ground, her mouth opened wide.

"An Archdevil Technique!", she exclaimed in feigned astonishment.

"It deserves to be the inheritance place of an ancient civilization."

"If one of the twelve treasure houses contains such a thing, then I can only wonder how valuable the true inheritance is.", Assira shook her head.

Her words made Liora frown.

Not because she had recognized the Archdevil Technique, but because her words suggested that Assira was familiar with this place.

Or at the very least, she knew more than her and the Plague Devil.

Despite being curious, though, she didn’t rush to ask any questions, ignoring Assira’s slight smile that was urging her to speak up.

Assira’s expression turned deflated.

She puffed up her cheeks like a young girl before breathing out bitterly.

"You’re no fun. You should at least try to ask me what I’m talking about."

"How can the conversation go on if you act like this?", she said and approached the Earth Devil, before searching through his belongings and taking a small stone token out.

Just like the one that Liora had previously discovered, this token was also numbered with the number "7".

"Judging by your lack of reaction, you should have already dealt with one of the treasure houses. This idiot must have also obtained a token since he dares to come here.", Assira glanced at the Plague Devil and said with some disdain.

"We’ve gathered a total of three tokens. These are enough for you, me, and that little girl over there to enter the inheritance palace.", Assira stated as she waved her hand and threw the Plague Devil’s corpse at Alpha.

Alpha did not make a move to grab it but instead took a step to the side and let it drop to the ground.

She turned to Liora and inquired with her eyes, asking about her intentions.

Having confirmed that Assira had not done anything malicious, Liora nodded her head and motioned for her to pick it up.

Then, she stared at Assira and spoke up for the first time since her arrival:

"It seems that you are really familiar with this place. Are the intelligence gathering abilities of the Astral Pavilion so good?", she questioned, but without giving her the time to respond, continued speaking.

"There’s no need to answer. How you obtained the information is none of my business.", she waved her hand.

"What I’m interested in is your purpose for showing up at this time."

"Judging by your tone and how easily you revealed this information, I believe you have something to talk about with me."

Assira did not care about losing the initiative in their conversation.

Ignoring the previous interruption, she played with the token in her hand, ruffled her hair with the other, and spoke with a smile.

"It seems that my decision to show up was correct. At least, you’re more intelligent than these fools.", she looked at the Plague Devil and joked, her words suggesting that the two had communicated before.

"You might have guessed how this maze came to be. In fact, this is a place built to house the inheritance of an ancient civilization."

"Just like the Universe Chamber of Commerce stated before, this used to be a higher-level world. However, due to some unfortunate events, it was forced to downgrade."

"But how could such a world be compared to normal medium-level worlds?", Assira asked rhetorically before continuing:

"There were several Archdevils and possibly even Ancient Devil beings in this world."

"Before the world was downgraded, these beings sensed the imminent threat and departed from this world, searching for other higher-level worlds to occupy."

"Before leaving, they left this place behind. It not only contains an inheritance for future generations, but also some methods left behind for their inevitable return."

Saying this, Assira pointed at the formation not far away.

"You must have seen the treasures hidden inside."

"However, what you don’t know is that these treasures are also accompanied by dangers. Without sufficient strength, intelligence, or caution, one will suffer even if they obtain them."

The moment Assira finished her words, she suddenly took action.

A pink mist shot out of her body and quickly spread.

Liora had been on guard all this time and was about to defend against this blow.

Yet, she soon realized that the mist’s target was not her.

Instead, it was the sword fragment lying on the floor, the one that the Plague Devil had previously used.

A painful scream echoed the moment the mist engulfed it.

The illusory figure of a young man appeared above it. Following a loud bang, it exploded.
