Evolution: From Little Devil to Devil Empress

Chapter 577: Splitting Up & Corpse

Chapter 577: Splitting Up & Corpse

Liora sensed a somewhat familiar aura emanating from the sword light, mixed with an ancient, decaying presence.

Unfortunately, she had no time to dwell on it.

The sword light vanished as quickly as it had appeared, leaving her with no time to investigate it any further.

Moreover, her “teammates” had seemingly no intention of waiting for her.

They passed through the barrier one after another and entered the ancient city fragment.

Unless Liora wanted to expose herself so soon, she had no choice but to follow after them.

Before long, the grotesque group of demons stepped into the city.

Although they had successfully crossed the barrier, none of them truly relaxed.

Information about the city fragments had long since spread throughout the battlefield.

That was precisely how they had learned of the black tokens.

Along with that information came another warning.

The city fragments were far from safe. Everyone who entered them would inevitably face certain dangers.

Ranging from puppets and ancient formations to walking corpses and even living beings, every Awakener had to remain vigilant if they wished to survive.

…Those thoughts flashed through Liora’s mind as she descended toward the ground.

At the same time, she took the opportunity of the high altitude to observe the city beneath her.

It was truly enormous.

From the outside, it had already resembled a continent, but only after entering did she realize its true scale.

Its endless surface was covered with intricate buildings and ancient structures.

The architecture was completely unlike that of the Human Federation. There was no trace of advanced technology, nor could any of the familiar landscapes that one would normally see be found.

Instead, towering pagodas, elegant pavilions, quiet courtyards, and ancient towers could be seen.

Soon, the group landed.

Although each demon was several kilometers tall, the streets were spacious enough to accommodate them with ease, as though the city had been built with giants in mind.

The demons exchanged silent glances for a few seconds as they surveyed their surroundings.

Finally, the tentacled Emperor spoke.

“I’ve reminded you before, but it seems you idiots can’t be fully trusted.”

“Listen carefully.”

“Although the residents appear to have evacuated in a hurry and no intelligent life remains, the mechanisms and formations they left behind are still active.”

Its expression gradually turned solemn as it spoke.

“The residents of this city were unimaginably powerful while alive. Even the mechanisms they’ve left behind are capable of threatening Rank 10 Emperors, much like Kings and Venerables like you.”

“I’m afraid only the capitals of the Apex Civilizations can compare to the magnificence of this city.”

As a Rank 10 Emperor, the tentacled demon held a high position within the Demon Race.

Its knowledge of Battlefield XC33XTI far surpassed that of ordinary demons.

Even Liora, who had received information directly from the War God, found herself learning something new.

Seeing that everyone was listening attentively, the Emperor continued.

“Although this is just a fragment, you’ve all seen its size. Flying within the city is extremely dangerous and strongly discouraged. Someone tried it in the past and alerted the outside formation.”

“Thus, exploring the entire place together would be far too inefficient.”

“I propose that we split up into teams. Each team will be composed of two people.”

As its gaze swept across the remaining members, the Emperor seemed to have realized something.

It quickly added:

“Since Ektor sought his own death, our numbers are uneven.”

“I’ll simply take two people with me.”

No one objected to these words.

If anything, everyone welcomed its proposal.

Although they had agreed beforehand to divide any treasures they found equally, very few actually believed that this would happen.

The difference between a King and a Venerable was enormous, while the gap between a Venerable and an Emperor was even greater.

With the tentacled Emperor coming with them, none of the others truly believed they would have a chance to claim anything valuable.

Splitting up suited everyone perfectly.

It didn’t take long.

Since they were already familiar with one another, the teams were formed quickly.

The Kings teamed up with other Kings, while the Venerables were paired with other Venerables.

Looking at her assigned partner—the same demon who had enthusiastically greeted her earlier—Liora couldn’t help rolling her eyes inwardly.

The two didn’t leave immediately.

Even after the other teams dispersed, they remained standing in the middle of the broad avenue.

Only after everyone else had vanished did Liora finally speak.

Instead of opening her mouth, she transmitted her voice directly through her consciousness, maintaining a sense of secrecy.

“Elaouthr, what were you talking about earlier?”, she imitated the way the original demon spoke.

“You said you know the location of an inheritance within the city. How is that possible?”, she asked, her surprise half feigned and half real.

Elaouthr sensed the disbelief in her tone, yet showed no displeasure. Instead, a smug grin spread along his face.

After looking around and confirming no one was nearby, he finally replied:

“It’s true. I was fortunate enough to obtain something else while searching for the token. I believe that besides me, no one had such luck so far.”

As he spoke, the giant demon casually waved a hand, nearly flattening the surrounding buildings with its mere momentum.

In response, an object appeared right before it.

Compared to their colossal bodies, it seemed tiny, like a speck of dust.

In reality, however, it was roughly the size of an ordinary human.

That comparison was remarkably fitting.

Because… the so-called object was actually a person!

Or more precisely, an intact corpse.

An ancient aura permeated its body, carrying countless years of history.

Its appearance matched that feeling perfectly.

It was an elderly man with long white hair and a flowing beard, wearing blue robes that still shone faintly despite the passage of time.

A sword hung from his waist, while a ring rested upon his finger.

At first glance, he looked human.

But as Liora examined him more closely, she sensed something different.

The humans she had encountered in other worlds had all been called “human”, but their internal structures varied greatly.

That made perfect sense.

After all, the origin of each human race differed according to the world.

Some had evolved naturally over time, others had been born that way, while some had even been the result of experiments.

Yet within each individual world, all humans had fundamentally shared the same characteristics.

…Or at the very least, that was what Liora had always believed.

As she looked at the corpse before her—a being who seemed completely different from the humans of the Cosmic Universe, as though the two belonged to entirely separate worlds—her eyes slowly narrowed.
