Chapter 1271: Four Pieces [2]
Chapter 1271: Four Pieces [2]
Since Lily knew that people strong enough to fight her would not die just because she broke an arm or shattered a leg, when the group tried to rob her of the opportunity she had worked hard to obtain, with the intention of killing her, she did not hold back.
Outside of their intention to kill her, it was especially because this was the opportunity she’d had, after so long, to use to help her cousin.
Michael had done far too much for her.
She finally found something useful, so why should she simply hand it over because a group of strangers wanted it?
Still, Lily’s anger had remained controlled. That was until the bear-like youth woke briefly and began insulting her.
The others had called him Prince.
At first, Lily had ignored him and his insults and threats even after beating him. But in frustration over being defeated, he said something indecent about her mother.
It had only been a few seconds since then, and now the young prince had stopped talking too, looking like he could barely breathe.
Was Lily a kind soul? Yes. One could even call her timid in many situations.
She disliked unnecessary conflict and hated fighting when there was another option.
But if Michael were standing here now, watching how she had just handled the group, he would have found the sight strangely familiar.
When Michael and Lily were younger, under Aunt Mia’s care, a single mother caring for them had always attracted comments from people who had nothing better to do.
Sometimes children repeated what they heard from adults. Sometimes they invented their own insults.
The previous Michael had usually handled such situations calmly. Most of the time, he would simply report the matter to a teacher and move on.
Lily, on the other hand, had never been quite as patient.
When boys or girls her age insulted Aunt Mia, Lily had a habit of handling the matter personally, after warning them, if they paid no heed.
That usually involved fists.
Sometimes scratching.
On one memorable occasion, biting.
Time had passed, and though she had grown older, quieter, and more restrained, some things had clearly never changed.
One should never underestimate the anger of a child when someone insulted their mother.
Even supernaturals tend to leave an enemy’s mother out of a battle of words.
It was one thing if the enemy’s parents were weak and the enemy themselves didn’t care about them, but if doing so only angered their opponent further while insulting someone much stronger than themselves, they could be done for.
In cases like this, like ordinary people, it was mostly the fathers of the opposing party that were used as a means of attack.
After calming herself down, Lily turned away from the group of almost-dead white bears. Her attention returned to the strange stone pillar.
The pillar was several meters tall and covered from top to bottom in shifting runes. They moved across its surface like living symbols, constantly rearranging themselves into patterns Lily could not understand.
She walked over and placed one hand against the cold stone. The moment her palm touched it, a panel appeared in front of her.
[Fragmented Universal Cornerstone detected.]
[Would you like to claim one fragment of the Universal Cornerstone?]
[Note: Gathering Four fragments will form a complete cornerstone.]
Lily’s eyes brightened at once.
"Yes."
The pillar trembled. The runes covering it began to peel away one after another, turning into streams of light that gathered before her.
A few seconds later, the entire pillar cracked and collapsed into countless particles.
Something solid formed within the light. Lily instinctively reached out and caught it.
It was a strange object, roughly the size of her palm. At first glance, it looked like a quarter of a circular plate.
Its surface was dark, almost black, with faint golden lines running through it. Along the curved edge, tiny runes slowly shifted in and out of existence.
The moment she held it, another panel appeared.
[Universal Cornerstone Fragment]
[Fragment: 1/4]
[Collect four fragments to reconstruct a complete Universal Cornerstone.]
Lily stared at the object for a few seconds, her face slowly breaking into a wide smile.
"Finally."
She quickly reached into her storage space. Three nearly identical fragments appeared.
When placed together, the four pieces clearly belonged to the same circular object. Lily’s smile grew even wider.
"The fourth piece."
She had spent so much time moving from region to region for this.
It wasn’t easy. Sometimes she had to face two or three Epic Grade creatures alone. The one she had just fought was the only one she’d found alone, but it was also the strongest among all the ones she had encountered.
Fortunately, she didn’t need to go through any more of these danger-filled battles, since she had now gathered all four of these pieces.
Lily carefully stored all four fragments again. Her first thought was not about what she could gain from them.
It was Michael. She had finally done something that might actually be useful to her cousin.
These four fragments were probably valuable enough that even he might not casually dismiss them. She was almost sure this was probably what he was looking for too. After all, wasn’t it just a week ago that a universal announcement had been made because of something like this?
Lily looked toward the distant sky.
"I can finally go home. Hmmm, though I could just give this to my cousin for free, I wonder if I can ask for a few favors instead. Ugh, but what would I even ask for?!"
Amidst her thoughts, Lily’s body disappeared into motes of light.

Back in the Land of Origin, Michael had already returned to his office.
Several documents were spread across the desk in front of him. He had barely gone through a few pages when a knock sounded from the door.
Through his senses, he could tell there were three presences outside.
"Enter."
The door opened.
A Silver Guard stepped inside first, dressed in polished silver armor.
Beside him was a youth who looked no older than seventeen. He wore simple clothes that looked more suited to an ordinary village or poor district than the imperial palace.
His expression was tense. In his arms, he carried someone.
Michael’s gaze moved toward the unconscious figure, then stopped, confusion settling over his face.
The person being carried looked almost exactly like the youth holding him.
Twins like this were quite good on the eyes, but what did they have to do with him?
In confusion, Michael turned to look at the Silver Guard, when he noticed the unconscious youth suddenly "wake" up, while the previously conscious one abruptly fell unconscious.
