Chapter 509 509: Hero And Saintess
Chapter 509 509: Hero And Saintess
Rain knelt in front of a statue of the veiled goddess in the holy church of Starbloom.
Around her, several nuns knelt as well and even Executioners. They all chanted as an old woman knelt in front of them.
That was the current Saintess and their chants filled the air as holy energy practically flooded the whole church, rejuvenating the bodies of everyone present in the place.
Rain focused on the prayer, letting the familiar words flow from her lips without conscious thought.
She had done this every day for two months now… Every single day since Azel had vanished into the Underworld without so much as a goodbye.
Her voice joined the chorus of devotion, rising and falling with the rhythm that only believers of the goddess could muster.
The holy energy wrapped around her like a warm embrace, soothing aches she hadn't known were there. It was always like this during their prayers. The goddess's blessing made itself known in tangible ways.
Finally the chanting stopped and the Saintess took a step up.
"Praise the goddess! For our hero has returned!" She said with a warm smile on her face as there were cheers in the Church.
Rain's heart skipped.
He was back… alive, in one piece, presumably.
They had done this prayer every single day for the past two months, and somehow Azel had returned without much injury.
Of course that was what Rain assumed. He would never let himself get beaten right to death after all.
The man was too stubborn for that.
Rain stood up and gave the Saintess a smile. She was next in line, however unlike in her past life, she would ensure that the current Saintess would live long enough to retire by herself.
A part of her didn't want to become the Saintess again, the last experience in her past life where the whole church was against her and burned her to death was still fresh in her memory. However, another part just wanted to ensure that this old woman got the break she deserved…
She couldn't decide on whether she truly wanted to be the Saintess or not.
"Rain."
She blinked, pulled from her thoughts as the Saintess spoke her name. Her Superior was wearing a nun uniform though it had a longer gown than the rest, marking her station clearly.
"Your hero has returned, are you not going to check on him?"
Rain felt her cheeks puff out before she could stop herself.
"He has healing magic." She said with a puff of her cheeks. "He can take care of himself."
She was still angry about the fact that he hadn't even told her anything about leaving. She was his Saintess which meant that she was supposed to follow him even if it was into the Underworld.
That was how it worked. Hero and Saintess, bound by duty and divine will. You didn't just abandon your Saintess and disappear into literal hell for two months without a word.
"Rainnn." The Saintess and several nuns joined in and she sighed exasperatedly.
"Fine, I'll do it and come back quickly." She said while turning around.
"Aren't you going to get him gifts too?" The Saintess asked with a smirk on her old face. "Men at his age like being given gifts, who knows? You can get deeper into his heart."
Rain looked back at the Saintess with a barely contained blush on her cheek.
"Saintess Martha... I'm not interested in the Hero. He's not my type." She said and Martha gave her a knowing smile making her avert her eyes.
"What? You're still trying to chase that thought of marrying a woman." Martha said with a laugh. "Begone with that thought... even the Goddess has blessed your relationship with Azel, so it's only right for you to pursue it."
Rain's face burned hotter. Of course the perverted Nyala had given her permission to get with Azel too if she was interested… and had been actively using the Saintess to convey it when they weren't talking.
Rain sighed and then began walking to the door.
'I'll just get a gift... talk to him a bit then come ba-'
Suddenly, something landed on her shoulder and she looked over to see the red bird.
"Fia." She said while using her hand to tap the crimson bird's cheek.
It looked like a regular bird however it was a baby phoenix. She had hatched a little over a month ago and according to what she knew, it would take some more months until she actually started maturing and looking like a Phoenix.
But it wasn't all for naught… Rain could use fire hotter than the regular fire mage since the both of them had bonded.
Fia chirped softly, nuzzling against Rain's cheek with obvious affection.
The warmth from the small creature was comforting in a way that Rain hadn't expected when she'd first taken responsibility for the egg.
"You want to come see him too?" Rain asked quietly.
Another chirp. Fia's feathers ruffled with what Rain had learned to recognize as excitement.
"Fine. But we're not staying long."
…
"How did we get into this situation..." Azel asked before his mouth was stuffed once more with a spoonful of food.
Some of the girls had taken it upon themselves to cook alongside Edna and everyone was now having lunch at the table including the kids however they had managed to turn this into a competition... which Stella won again.
At this point, the girls were suspecting her of cheating even if they couldn't prove it but she had effectively used all of her turns.
From tomorrow, until all the girls got their own chances, she would not be allowed to participate.
However she was fine with it as she watched Azel chew down the rice and beef stew slowly then she handed him a cup of water which he used to drink it down.
The way she moved was graceful and she made sure all of them saw it,
"What can I say? I guess I'm a lucky woman, huh?" She teased and that drew reactions from all over the table except Edna who sat confidently with a smile on her own face as she breast-fed Isolde.
Everyone wondered what was getting her giddy but nobody questioned it as they continued eating.
Azel swallowed his food and reached for more on his own plate, but Stella was faster. Another spoonful was already waiting.
"You don't have to feed me the entire meal." He said.
"I won fair and square." Stella replied smoothly. "Let me enjoy my prize."
Sybil stabbed at her own food with more force than necessary.
Sybil looked like she was mentally calculating the odds for tomorrow's game and even Anastasia seemed mildly annoyed, though she hid it better than the others.
Just then, the gate of the Mansion was knocked on. Feng stood up from the table and Irielle did as well.
"I'll go check." Both of them said at the same time then looked at each other.
Azel raised up his hand.
"Irielle, continue eating your foo-"
Stella stuffed food into his mouth again, cutting him off and making him chew. At the same time, she used that same spoon to scoop some food for herself and put it in her own mouth.
Sybil and the other girls fumed with jealousy. They were practically sharing the same spoon… It seemed Stella's goal for today was to make them completely jealous and it was working spectacularly.
Feng rushed outside while Irielle sat back down, soon he came back in while turning to Azel.
"Master, a woman from the church named Rain is here to see you." Feng told him and Azel stood up, swallowing down his food however Stella took hold of his hand.
"You shouldn't go outside with an oily mouth." She said while reaching in between her cleavage and pulling out a napkin with a confident smile. "Here."
The scene was so erotic that it drew huffs all across the room and what was more surprising was that Azel took the napkin without any surprise and rubbed it on his mouth as he walked to the door.
Stella's confident expression began to crumble as she began to fan her face a bit while using the same spoon to eat.
'He's not embarrassed... I'm an old woman and even I am embarrassed.' She thought with a sigh. Her hands were actually trembling slightly. She'd meant to fluster him, not herself.
…
Rain finally saw Azel as she stood in front yard and he had just come out using a napkin to dab his lips. The napkin in question smelled like a woman. Even from this distance, she could smell it.
Perfume… it was expensive perfume mixed with something else, sweat maybe or just the natural scent of whoever had been close enough to him to give him that napkin.
Rain's jaw tightened.
"Also... why are your ears long?" Rain asked. It had been quite a while since she saw Azel, not only had he grown more mature but now he seemed like an elf too. How did all that work?
"I visited the Land of Elves... nothing much." Azel said, stopping a few meters away from her. "You look more beautiful than before."
He wasn't the only one that had been maturing. Rain's face had lost some of the cheek fat that she had and her hair wasn't that long anymore, plus she wasn't wearing any more clothes for a man's attention, only to deny that she wanted the attention in the first place.
Yes, she had grown mature.
Her current robes were practical and modest, there was no more low necklines or clothes that hugged too tight.
"Thank you however little flattery won't work on me." Rain said. "You returned from the Underworld today... I don't sense any irregularities from you so it seemed you returned in one piece. I have a question to ask."
"Ask away." Azel said and Rain puffed her cheeks just a little.
"Why... Why didn't you let me come with you?" She asked and Azel blinked.
"Huh? You wanted to go to the Underworld?"
"No, I didn't. But I'm your Saintess and you're my hero... it works like that. I'm supposed to follow you into the mouth of dang-"
"So you care about if I get hurt?" Azel asked with a smile. "Cute."
Her eyes twitched.
"No I don't... I'm just saying it's my job." She said. "You did it without me..."
The words came out more petulant than she'd intended. She sounded like a child complaining about being left behind during an adventure.
Fia chirped from her shoulder, almost like the phoenix was laughing at her.
'Oh, so she managed to hatch the egg? That's good.' Azel thought and smiled.
"It would have been too stressful for you, besides what were the chances of you following along without trouble the moment I asked?" Azel asked.
Her face reddened. He was right. If he had come to meet her first, she would have troubled him. But then again, he was the Hero and he had a lot of women, he was supposed to be able to handle a bit of trouble.
"Whatever." She threw the package into his hand and he caught it. "I don't care anymore... Nyala's watching over you after all. Just take that and leave."
Azel raised an eyebrow.
"You're in my house."
Her face reddened even more and she ran toward the gate, yanking it open and closing it behind her as she made a bee-line down the road, leaving Azel's residence completely.
'It's hard to imagine that this woman is a regressor...' Azel thought with a sigh as he bolted the gate and went back inside.
The moment he got to the dining room, all eyes turned to him.
"Master, who was that?" Irielle asked first.
"The Saintess candidate." Azel replied as he tore open the top of the package and looked at the contents. "... Oh, she knows me so well."
Inside were several fried fish skewers that would be enough for all of them, they were still warm and wrapped carefully in wax paper. The smell hit him immediately. It was perfectly seasoned, cooked exactly how he liked them… though they couldn't match Alani's own.
"Ah, Papa. What's that?" Lillia asked and Azel pulled out a fried fish skewer.
"Who wants?"
The Skewers finished the next second.
