Chapter 518 518: Mother's Test
Chapter 518 518: Mother's Test
The rain kept on falling and even after everyone left, Rain was still under the statue looking at where the Saintess had been buried.
'Once again…'
She thought bitterly.
In her first life, her mother had died when she was young and Martha had taken care of her as if she was one of her own daughters then Martha was killed by demons, urging the Emperor and the church to make Rain the Saintess in her place.
Martha was her mother-figure and in this life too, she had failed to save her mother figure once again.
What was the use of being a regressor when she could not save anyone that mattered?
[You were too harsh]
Nyala's voice sounded in her head and Rain bit her lip hard enough to taste copper. Her blond hair was completely wet right now, plastered to her face.
"I still haven't forgiven you for letting her die… You know how much I care about Martha, don't you?" Rain asked and Nyala let out a sigh that echoed through her mind.
The goddess could understand Rain's pain perfectly. It was exactly how she felt while Azel was in the Underworld and she thought that he had died.
[I am a goddess, the goddess of light and I will protect my subjects however it is only if they ask for it. Martha wanted to die… you should respect her decision, the woman has suffered enough]
"What do you mean…?"
[Martha was an infertile woman. She was married to a man for several years however she was unable to have children.] Nyala explained. [Every day since she found out, she prayed for me to alleviate her sickness and I did. On the day that she was chosen as the Saintess, she had a daughter.]
'So Martha enjoyed her life…'
Rain thought with a confused expression. She had never seen the woman with any child in either timeline. Where was the child now?
[However her daughter and husband were both killed in an attack on Rochel city, rendering the woman depressed for years.]
Rain's breath caught in her throat.
[So she wanted to die… and nothing I could say could change her mind but she also wanted to train the next Saintess before taking her life. She saw you as the new Saintess which was why she died, and if you ask me how she died in your first life… I could say that she probably killed herself]
Rain didn't say anything anymore but she fell onto her knees in the mud, not caring about the filth.
[The main reason I spoke to you right now is that what you told Azel is completely wrong… He is currently traumatized from losing someone in the Underworld.]
Her breath hitched sharply.
She had told him that he hadn't known the feeling of loss… she'd thrown those words at him like weapons.
[You better apologize. I'll be waiting]
And then Nyala's voice faded leaving Rain alone while the storm was still raging on around her.
…
"HARGH!" Both Azel and Azariah let out loud grunts as they glared at each other and their hands trembled with effort.
They were currently arm wrestling at a table brought from the basement and the girls including Azel's mother Diana and his sister Ellie were cheering them on loudly.
"Go, Az!"
"Big brother, you can do this!"
"Hey, aren't you supposed to be cheering for me too?" Azariah asked as he looked at Ellie who stuck out her tongue at him playfully.
"No way… Big brother is more important." She said and Azariah grunted before strengthening his bones with magic and using divinity as well.
"You're going down, bastard!" He yelled out as he pushed Azel's hand back slowly.
Cracks had even began appearing all over the wooden table from the pressure and Gwendolyn looked at the scene in front of her with a completely blank face.
She could now see why Azel was like this.
His whole family was absolutely nuts. She turned her head to the right to look at all of the girls including Selene who had arrived before the start of this match and they were cheering for Azariah now instead.
"Go, father-in-law! You can do it!"
"Defeat him, father-in-law!"
It seemed like they were trying to get on his good side and Gwendolyn would have done the same too, well if she could actually be heard by anyone.
Everybody was trying to get over the Saintess's death… They couldn't mourn her forever after all, life had to continue.
Azariah let out a deep triumphant laughter.
"Hohoho~ And that's tha—"
In that instant, divinity bubbled up Azel's hand and he didn't waste any time at all. He pushed Azariah's hand the other way with explosive force and it collided with the table, shattering it entirely and forcing Azariah to the ground.
The dust cleared and Azel stood over his father while flexing his muscles victoriously.
"And I win…" He said with a smile as Effie ran over to him excitedly and he carried her up.
Azariah gritted his teeth and then burst into laughter at his loss.
"I guess you didn't spend all of that time getting weaker then." He said and then Lillia waved her hands calmly.
The particles of the shattered table flew up and out the front door so that they would not harm anyone in the house.
Azariah looked at Lillia with pride. The girl was even stronger now than the last time they had seen her in the Winter region, her mana control was impressive.
"Anyway, why don't you introduce me to my daughter-in-laws?" He asked while dusting himself off.
He looked over at the girls and Diana did as well with curiosity.
It had just been a while since they'd seen him. How did he go from just Edna and Medusa to a whole house filled with women? Their son had become a womanizer through and through.
"Welll…" Azel started awkwardly. He really didn't know where to start but he cleared his throat. "Edna, why don't you do it?"
"Sure sure." Edna said with a smile that was far too innocent. "But you owe me one, you know."
She made a circle with one hand and then put her finger through it with a lewd smile on her face.
Diana threw a can at her head and it hit her square in the forehead, making her fall to the ground with a yelp.
"Not in front of the kids, Edna." Diana said with a heavy sigh.
…
Azel sat at the head of the dining table and they had added more chairs this time as well for all the guests.
His family would be staying for quite a while… The four other guys in the furious five were out in the backyard doing some intensive "rain" training or whatever they called it.
He would be joining them afterward for bonding.
Diana cleared her throat to get everyone's attention.
"So all of you are interested in my son, huh?" Diana asked, looking at Stella specifically who gave her a polite smile.
She wasn't a fan of the fact that he had gone for a woman that had a child that was already grown. However she was not one that would interfere in the relationships that her son chose to pursue.
So instead, she would settle with testing if they really loved him. It was the least that she could do as his mother.
Azel sighed heavily. Sybil, Flare, and Esme and Naelia weren't here right now since their families had called them back especially given the assassination situation, though he wished they had met Diana.
The girls at the table nodded in response to Diana's question and she took a deep breath.
"Then I have a mission for you all… apart from Medusa and Edna as well as Veyra of course. It's a simple thing." Diana said while cracking her knuckles. "I want to know if you're fit enough to protect my son. How about we fight it out?"
She asked while specifically looking at Stella with challenging eyes.
Stella sighed internally. It seemed Azel's mother really didn't like her that much however she would ensure that the woman would change her mind.
She was not backing off one bit from this relationship… even though they hadn't made it official between themselves yet.
"Starting with Stella… I'll spar with all of you and please don't hold back. I might not look it but I'm pretty strong." She said and Azel face-palmed hard.
"We're supposed to be enjoying dinne—"
"Not now young man… I need to check if they can really protect you." Diana interrupted firmly. "You're the hero of the world or whatever. Can the women at your side really protect you if things go south?"
She asked as she rose up from her seat.
"Alright, all of you to the back… Azariah, do you have any qualms?"
The man had just finished stuffing fried chicken into his mouth and he sighed while chewing.
"I have nothing to say."
…
As expected, it was Stella that Diana had chosen to spar with at first.
The other members of the Furious Five were standing with Veyra now, watching the proceedings with interest.
"So you left with him over a year ago and you're still not pregnant yet." The buff one asked with a teasing smile on his face and Veyra merely averted her eyes with a blush.
"Whatever… It'll be my turn when this is all over."
In the middle of the backyard, Stella stood on one side and Diana stood on the other. They both stared at each other while the rain continued falling.
"How do I know that you're not using my son to get over your dead husband…?" She asked as she stared at Stella and Stella shrugged honestly.
"If it helps, he came onto me firs—"
Diana waved her hand and several lances made of ice shot toward Stella with whooshing speed, however they stopped as they encountered several runes in the air that bounced them back to the ground, shattering them into pieces.
However, at that time, Diana closed the distance while holding onto a sword made with ice and then she slashed outward at Stella's throat.
Stella angled herself backward and dodged the strike by mere inches.
'She's a mage and a swordsman too, huh? Like mother like son I guess…'
She thought, and she could also understand Diana's reaction perfectly. If a married man that she had never seen before came to ask for Mynes's hand in marriage, she would simply burn his head off without hesitation.
Stella bounced off the ground and Diana was paused by a rune that spread below her feet, glowing red.
"Is casting runes all you know how to do…?" Diana asked with disappointment.
She respected Stella's strength, especially the strength that the Great Mage gave off, but setting runes simply wasn't enough to impress her.
The rune exploded as she flared her mana violently and she leapt into the air, slashing at Stella again only for the Great Mage to defend with a small dagger of her own.
That brought out a shockwave that blew caution to the wind and rattled the nearby trees. Then Stella pushed off Diana, floating backward through the air.
Diana flipped through the air and landed on one of the trees while holding her sword properly and shooting off it with explosive force.
The tree froze entirely as she closed the distance once more and she was in front of Stella who was about to land on the ground.
SIIIII!!!
Both of them landed on the ground and there was a slicing sound as Diana's dress was cut at the top and not only that, blood splashed on the ground as well from the wound.
Azel ran in their direction immediately.
Diana dropped her sword and smiled as she pressed her hand against the line that stretched across her chest. Sure she was bleeding but she was a Winter and pain would not kill her so easily.
"I see, I underestimated you." Diana said with a genuine smile on her face.
A warrior could tell the emotions of another through clashing weapons and that final attack, she could see it now clearly... Stella's resolve was real.
Azel reached her side and looked at the wound with concern.
"You're bleeding…" He said as holy energy surrounded his hands and healed up her wound completely. "If you die now, who's going to carry your grandchildren?"
Diana let out a laugh and turned to the rest of the girls with a hand on her waist confidently.
"Alright next!" She said while forming another sword of ice, even under the rain. "We have to eat dinner after all."
Stella looked at her back then at Azel's face and she leaned forward, kissing him on the cheek before flying off toward the house.
Diana pointed her sword at her and yelled.
"Get back here!!!"
