Chapter 1381: 1380 Pull out the person behind it

Wen Ran pressed her lips together, using her gaze to tell Mo Xiuchen that Fang Zhiwei’s resentment towards her brother, Gu Kai, because of their father’s death, had not been dispelled yet.

The two who shared mutual understanding didn’t need words—just one look and they understood each other.

Mo Xiuchen’s grip on her hand tightened slightly, and he cast a glance at Gu Kai.

“Alright, I’ll have a nurse take you there.” Gu Kai walked to the desk, dialed an internal line, and gave a brief instruction over the intercom.

Soon, someone knocked and entered. “Doctor Gu.”

“Accompany Miss Fang to see Professor Fang,” Gu Kai instructed the young nurse, who nodded and complied.

Fang Zhiwei bid farewell to Wen Ran before quickly stepping out of the office, with the young nurse following behind her to lead her to the morgue.

“Ah Kai, Fang Zhiwei really does hate you now.”

Once the sound of footsteps faded down the hallway, Mo Xiuchen spoke in a faint tone.

Gu Kai’s brows furrowed lightly, his expression stern. He hadn’t been in good spirits all afternoon.

“It’s normal for her to hate me. As she said, if she hadn’t known me, if we hadn’t dated, maybe her father wouldn’t have left in this way.”

Gu Kai’s tone was heavy with sadness, his chest weighed down by unresolved bitterness. Although those photos were photoshopped and the letter wasn’t written by Bai Yiyi, the whole mess still involved him and Bai Yiyi in the end.

“By the way, Fang Zhiwei wouldn’t go looking to settle accounts with Bai Yiyi, would she?” Mo Xiuchen asked with a hint of concern.

Wen Ran responded, “No, I explained it all to Sister Wei this afternoon. She said she knows that the letter wasn’t written by Yiyi.”

At this point, Wen Ran paused for a moment and addressed Gu Kai, “Brother, without your permission, I told Sister Wei about what Bai Yuqin was involved in years ago. You’re not going to blame me, right?”

“Why would I blame you? Telling Fang Zhiwei about those things was to help eliminate the resentment in her heart. Bai Yiyi is innocent in all of this—she shouldn’t have been dragged into the matter to begin with. You did the right thing by explaining it. Letting Fang Zhiwei know that neither in the past, now, nor the future, is there any possibility between me and Bai Yiyi.”

Gu Kai’s lips curled in a self-deprecating smile, and a faint bitterness lingered in his heart.

After everything that had happened, his relationship with Bai Yiyi reverted back to square one.

Not only was Bai Yiyi distant and indifferent towards him, keeping him at arm’s length, but he also didn’t know how to approach her anymore.

Wen Ran noticed Gu Kai’s emotions, an ache piercing her heart. Unable to hold back, she blurted out, “Brother, don’t say things so resolutely. You and Yiyi like each other. Maybe, over time, those knots in your hearts can be untied.”

Previously, her brother had been able to let go of his emotional burdens and confess to Bai Yiyi. Someday, it might also be possible to move past the resentment.

At least, Wen Ran hoped so.

“Ranran, Xiuchen, you two should head back. Don’t keep the three little ones waiting.” Gu Kai exhaled a long breath, not wanting to linger on the topic any longer.

What mattered most for now wasn’t his relationship with Bai Yiyi, but finding out who sent the package to Fang Zhiwei.

“Did you meet with Lu Zhiyan this afternoon?” Mo Xiuchen asked with concern, seemingly in no rush to leave.

Gu Kai nodded and replied in a calm tone, “I did. I told him to investigate. Besides, I plan to meet Qian Songnan and see if I can find any clues from him.”

“Qian Songnan?”

Mo Xiuchen’s deep-set eyes narrowed slightly. “Where is his son, Qian Xiaojun, now?”

Gu Kai’s phone suddenly rang. Instead of answering Mo Xiuchen’s question, he pulled out his phone to answer the call. “Hello?”

“Doctor Gu, we’ve completed the formalities for Qian Xiaojun, and he’ll return to the hospital tonight.”

“Alright. On your way, keep a close eye on his condition. If there’s any abnormality, call me immediately.”

Gu Kai hung up the phone and explained, “What a coincidence—this afternoon, I got a call from Qian Songnan’s wife. She said she wanted to transfer Qian Xiaojun back to Kangning Hospital. Since they have no money, the other hospital discharged him.”

“Wouldn’t it be more effective for you to have his wife ask Qian Songnan directly?” Mo Xiuchen frowned lightly.

“I plan to go with her. Hearing things firsthand would be more reassuring than relying on second-hand accounts,” Gu Kai replied with a curl of his lips. “If I can get clues from Qian Songnan, it’ll speed up finding that person.”

“Hmm, that makes sense. But isn’t Qian Xiaojun’s condition difficult to treat? Are you confident about approving his transfer back?”

Mo Xiuchen pondered for a moment before asking with concern.

“I wouldn’t say I’m 100% confident, but I’m at least 50% sure. I’ve already made arrangements. Once Qian Xiaojun is admitted, I’ll conduct a detailed examination and then discuss the surgery plan.”

“If you need anything, give me a call. Ranran and I will head back now.” Mo Xiuchen glanced at the watch on his wrist—it was getting late.

“You guys head back. I’ll go check on the wards.” Gu Kai waved them off.

Before leaving Kangning Hospital, Mo Xiuchen instructed Little Liu to wait there for a while and, if no one showed up to escort Fang Zhiwei, to ensure she got home safely.

Inside the car, Mo Xiuchen leaned over to fasten Wen Ran’s seatbelt.

Noticing the faint melancholy clouding her brows and eyes, he smiled gently. “Ranran, are you feeling worried about Fang Zhiwei’s father’s death?”

Wen Ran pressed her lips slightly and raised her eyes to meet Mo Xiuchen’s tender gaze. “I was thinking, should I go to a temple and light some incense, to pray for blessings?”

Mo Xiuchen chuckled softly, his large, distinct hands ruffling her hair with indulgent affection. “Ranran, since when did you start believing in spirits and gods?”

“I’ve always believed in them!”

Wen Ran responded indifferently, her brows quirking. “I want to ask the gods to bless all my loved ones—to be safe, healthy, and joyful.”

“Silly!”

Mo Xiuchen whispered, “Ranran, if you feel bored at home, you can come work at the company, be my secretary.”

“Why?”

Wen Ran blinked in confusion. She didn’t feel bored at home; she had only mentioned wanting to go to a temple to pray. Did Mo Xiuchen assume she was feeling restless at home and became superstitious because of it?

Meeting her puzzled gaze, Mo Xiuchen’s deep-set eyes flickered. “I’m worried you might get stifled staying at home all the time—spending every day with those three little ones might drive you crazy. Since they’re already over a year old now and have a nanny to take care of them daily, you could take it easy.”

Wen Ran looked into his amused gaze, brushed aside the trace of doubt in her heart, and said with a laugh, “Xiuchen, I plan to stay with the kids until they turn three. Once they’re three years old, then I’ll start working again. Staying at home doesn’t feel suffocating to me. What I’m afraid of is that the distance between us will grow wider.”

“Ranran, that’s not what I meant. If you think like that, I’ll really get upset.” Mo Xiuchen slightly furrowed his brows, his handsome expression darkening in response.

Seeing him feign anger, Wen Ran relaxed and teased him, “I didn’t say you meant it; it’s what I myself think. I’m just scared that one day we’ll run out of things to talk about.”
