Flash Marriage: He is a Wife-pampering Addict

Chapter 1404: He's not good enough for you

Chapter 1404: He’s not good enough for you

Thinking about what Zhang Siming said to Bai Yiyi that night, Gu Kai’s gaze darkened again. His eyes briefly swept across her arm, his tone cooled slightly, “I can lip-read.”

“So that’s how it is,” Bai Yiyi finally understood.

She had thought about it; how could he have possibly heard what Zhang Siming said?

“In the end, did you agree to his request?”

Gu Kai asked a rather silly question, and Bai Yiyi’s mouth twitched slightly, “I don’t want to ruin him.”

“What nonsense are you talking about? Zhang Siming could train for another thousand years and still wouldn’t deserve you. How would you ruining him even be possible?” Gu Kai protested indignantly.

Even if Bai Yiyi’s parents were his enemies, in his eyes, the woman standing before him was still extraordinary. To him, no man other than Gu Kai himself was worthy of her.

Bai Yiyi looked at the man before her with furrowed brows and a stern expression. Her heart warmed and a smile broke onto her face, “So you’re basically complimenting me… The traffic police are coming over; hurry up and drive.”

Her words were cut short as she caught sight of the police officer in the distance. She quickly changed her tone.

Gu Kai glanced at the approaching traffic officer, pressed his lips together, started the engine, and before the officer was merely a few steps away, the Maybach sped past him.

Half an hour later, Gu Kai and Bai Yiyi were stuck in a traffic jam at the highway toll station.

The cars ahead were packed densely and stretched endlessly into the horizon. Seeing his knitted brows, Bai Yiyi glanced at him, unscrewed a bottle of water, and handed it to him, saying, “Drink some water; might as well rest for a bit.”

“Thank you.”

Gu Kai accepted the water and gave Bai Yiyi a faint smile.

After drinking and tightening the bottle cap, Gu Kai turned to look at Bai Yiyi, “If you’re tired, take a nap. Judging by this jam, it’ll be a while before we can move.”

“I told you not to give me a ride; what if we’re stuck here all day?”

Frustrated, Bai Yiyi pouted slightly.

“You don’t have wings, so even if I didn’t give you a ride, you’d still be stuck. Instead of squeezing into a crowded bus, isn’t it better to sit in my car? At least there’s eye candy here.”

“What eye candy? I don’t see any.”

Bai Yiyi pretended to look around.

Gu Kai reached out his large hand, holding her head firmly in place so she could only look at him. Bai Yiyi squirmed in dissatisfaction, but Gu Kai’s strength was too much—she couldn’t break free and had no choice but to stare at him.

“Now do you see?”

Gu Kai’s lips curved into a proud smile, his deep black eyes rippling with amusement.

“I see, I see, now let go of me,” Bai Yiyi laughed and conceded, deciding that a wise woman didn’t suffer in the moment and letting him have his small victory for now.

“That’s more like it.” Gu Kai raised an eyebrow in satisfaction, his laughter spreading, and he released her. Leaning back against the seat, his gaze drifted forward.

In the Fang family’s living room

Fang Zhiwei descended from the upstairs, and Lu Zhiyan immediately stood up from the sofa, a polite smile on his face, greeting her, “Miss Fang, I apologize for troubling you.”

“Oh, it’s nothing. I’m just idle at home anyway.”

Upon hearing this, Lu Zhiyan breathed a sigh of relief and stepped away from the sofa, “Then shall we head off?”

“Sure.”

Fang Zhiwei nodded. Seeing Lu Zhiyan approach, she simply waited at the staircase landing. Only when he reached her spot did they walk together toward the entryway.

“You don’t need to drive; ride with me instead. I’ll drop you back later.” Lu Zhiyan’s gaze swept over the car keys in her hand as he spoke gently.

Fang Zhiwei hesitated for a moment, but before she could refuse, Lu Zhiyan grabbed her wrist, took her car keys, strode over to the sofa, placed the keys on the coffee table, and returned in just a few steps, “Let’s go then. It won’t just be me today, so you don’t have to worry.”

“There are others coming along?”

Fang Zhiwei looked at Lu Zhiyan in surprise.

She really wasn’t aware; she had received a call from her aunt early in the morning, asking for her help.

“Two colleagues—three of us are men, which is why we needed your assistance,” Lu Zhiyan explained with a smile.

He considered himself quite clever.

Last night, after agreeing to Gu Kai’s request to persuade Fang Zhiwei into getting treatment, he began thinking about how he could approach her.

They were not acquainted, so if he appeared at her house suddenly saying she needed treatment for depression and that he was there to accompany her through the process, Fang Zhiwei wouldn’t hesitate to grab a knife and chase him.

He needed a way to approach Fang Zhiwei, to get closer without inciting her aversion or rejection.

Thus, Lu Zhiyan had thought of today’s rural outreach for elderly welfare.

Originally, he hadn’t been supposed to participate, but to complete the mission Gu Kai assigned, he had no choice but to forgo his break and return to work.

He then called Fang Zhiwei’s uncle, avoiding the topic of her depression entirely, and hinted that he’d like her help.

Fang Zhiwei’s uncle readily agreed, assuring him that she would accompany him today, and further instructed him to include her in similar events in the future.

“Didn’t you say there were two other colleagues?”

When they got into the car, Fang Zhiwei didn’t seem to see anyone else and furrowed her brow. She turned to look at Lu Zhiyan in the driver’s seat.

Today, the weather was particularly favorable; sunlight filtered through the car window, illuminating his police uniform and making him appear especially upright and handsome.

His lips curved as he started the car, “They went straight to the rural area. We’ve agreed on a meeting point. You look like you didn’t get much sleep last night—if you’re tired, you can nap for a while. I’ll wake you up when we get there.”

“No need; the scenery is quite nice—I’ll just take a look.”

Fang Zhiwei wasn’t used to sleeping in front of strangers. Her previous interaction with Lu Zhiyan at Yi Pin Xuan had been unpleasant, and she’d agreed to participate today primarily to give face to her aunt.

Thus, her demeanor toward Lu Zhiyan was distant and polite.

“Alright then.”

Lu Zhiyan didn’t insist. As his words faded, his phone rang. He turned on the Bluetooth headset, “Hello?”

“Zhiyan, I heard from Uncle Lu that you’re heading to the countryside for an outreach event. Weren’t you…”

“Yes, I’m heading there now.”

Before Wen Jin could finish, Lu Zhiyan interrupted, his tone gentle and calm, “By the way, are you free today? If so, why not join us? As we approach the year-end, we’re really short on staff. I even invited Miss Fang to come along.”

“Short on staff?”

Wen Jin’s voice carried a trace of hesitation as he glanced at Jing Xiaocha, who had shown up at his house early that morning.

“Yes—we’re a team of four, including two police officers, myself, and Miss Fang. Come lend a hand if you can. I still have to go to the airport to pick up my cousin this afternoon.”

Lu Zhiyan felt that he and Fang Zhiwei were not familiar enough to sustain a conversation.

Inviting Wen Jin added another companion, and most importantly, Wen Jin’s “Little Tail” was lively and cheerful, capable of chatting with Fang Zhiwei.
