Chapter 1414: 1413 through trials and tribulations

Chapter 1414: 1413 through trials and tribulations

As the New Year’s bell rang, Wen Jin, Lu Zhiyan, and Jing Xiaocha were still at Fang Zhiwei’s house.

“Ah Jin, Xiaocha, let’s not go back tonight. There are just enough of us—four people—to play Mahjong,” Lu Zhiyan said as he came out of the kitchen with a late-night snack, addressing Wen Jin, who was sitting on the couch.

Behind him, Jing Xiaocha carried a plate of dumplings, and Fang Zhiwei followed with a tray of desserts.

Wen Jin, having just ended a phone call, stood up and followed them into the dining room. He replied nonchalantly, “I don’t mind, but I’m just worried if these two girls can stay up until dawn.”

“Brother Wen, you’re underestimating Sister Fang and me. Not only can we last till dawn, but we might also clean out your wallets. Isn’t that right, Sister Fang?”

Jing Xiaocha immediately defended herself and Fang Zhiwei. After speaking, she raised an eyebrow and cast a meaningful glance at Fang Zhiwei, nudging her to agree.

Tonight, it was her mission to cheer Fang Zhiwei up.

Jing Xiaocha had been putting in all her effort to find topics to talk about, tell jokes, and even poke fun at herself—everything she could think of just to make Fang Zhiwei smile.

Her task, assigned by Wen Jin, was to become Fang Zhiwei’s friend.

Her hard work paid off. After teaching Fang Zhiwei how to make zodiac-themed dumplings, Fang Zhiwei genuinely started treating her as a friend.

“Hmm, Wen Jin, you and Lu Zhiyan better watch out tonight. If you lose your wallets, Xiaocha and I definitely won’t be returning them.”

“Talk is cheap, but you two are really full of it,” Lu Zhiyan turned around, carrying the plates to the small table in the living room. “Let’s start now. Don’t delay the game for the midnight snack—let’s eat while we play Mahjong.”

“Can one of you call Ah Kai and see if he’s finished with work?”

After setting down the plates, Fang Zhiwei looked at Wen Jin and Lu Zhiyan and suggested this.

Wen Jin’s eyes flickered before he smiled lightly and said, “I’ll call him. Do you have a Mahjong set at home?”

“Yes, go ahead and call him. I’ll ask the maid to bring out the Mahjong table.”

Neither she nor her father enjoyed playing Mahjong. They only brought out the table during holidays when relatives visited.

As Wen Jin dialed the number, Fang Zhiwei kept her eyes on the phone in his hand.

Jing Xiaocha, observing Fang Zhiwei’s expression, sighed quietly to herself. This mission was proving nearly impossible for her to accomplish.

Brother Wen wanted her to become Fang Zhiwei’s friend, but she knew the real goal—it was to help Fang Zhiwei move on from Gu Kai.

Jing Xiaocha couldn’t understand why Fang Zhiwei clung to a man who didn’t love her, torturing not just herself but others, too.

Gu Family.

Gu Kai wasn’t asleep. As the New Year’s bell rang, he was busy replying to messages of well wishes.

Finally, he sent Bai Yiyi a text wishing her a Happy New Year.

When Wen Jin’s call came through, he had just finished texting Bai Yiyi. Pressing the answer button, he greeted indifferently, “Ah Jin.”

“Ah Kai, are you still at the hospital? Are you finished with work?”

Gu Kai paused slightly, realizing they didn’t know he hadn’t gone to the hospital but had returned home instead.

“No, not yet. I’m on the night shift tonight.”

“Alright, then focus on work. Zhiyan, Xiaocha, Fang Zhiwei, and I are planning to play Mahjong all night. If I win, I’ll treat you to lunch tomorrow.”

“Okay!”

Gu Kai’s eyes flickered slightly as he replied flatly.

***

The next morning, Wen Jin called Gu Kai bright and early.

Wen Jin informed him that Jing Xiaocha and Fang Zhiwei had teamed up to win all of his and Lu Zhiyan’s money the night before, and they were heading out on a trip today.

“Where are you going?”

Gu Kai asked in surprise.

Wen Jin answered over the phone, “We’re going to see Ranran and Mo Xiuchen. We won’t be back for a few days.”

“Good brother, thank you.” Gu Kai knew all too well that Wen Jin had agreed to travel with Fang Zhiwei for his sake.

After last night’s episode, if they didn’t take her out of G City or find something to preoccupy her, she would undoubtedly try to contact Gu Kai these next few days.

And insist on his company.

But if it were a trip to a random destination, Fang Zhiwei might have no interest. That’s why Wen Jin had called Wen Ran. The moment Wen Ran heard the situation, she immediately agreed.

“A simple thanks won’t cut it. Let me tell you, I already know what happened last night. You better remember this—when I need your help someday, and you so much as frown, I’ll make sure you regret it.”

Wen Jin deliberately threatened him.

“Don’t worry, even if it’s crossing mountains of blades or seas of fire, I won’t frown.” Gu Kai didn’t need to think to know that Wen Jin must have spoken with Ranran, who had spilled everything to him.

“Ah Kai, I think it would be better if you just made Fang Zhiwei give up.”

After a brief silence, Wen Jin offered his suggestion.

“How am I supposed to make her give up? After what happened last night, I wish I could just erase her memories.” Gu Kai laughed at himself bitterly.

If he were truly to be with another woman now, and Fang Zhiwei found out, wouldn’t she climb to the highest rooftop in all of G City to jump off?

If he had known she would cling like this, he never would have gotten involved with her in the first place.

“Erase her memories? She’s not a computer or a phone that you can reset. See how things go for now. If there’s no improvement and she causes more trouble, then you might as well make her give up decisively. Let her do whatever—live or die—it’s up to her.”

Though Wen Jin’s words seemed heartless,

sometimes, when pushed to the brink, one had no choice but to act without mercy.

Gu Kai couldn’t possibly agree to marry Fang Zhiwei just because she demanded it.

“Let’s wait and see. If it really comes to that point, I’ll make the decision then.” Gu Kai fell silent for a moment before replying in a heavy tone.

After ending the call with Wen Jin, Gu Kai headed to the adjoining children’s room to check if Tongtong was awake. As he opened the door, he saw Tongtong sitting on the bed, rubbing her eyes with both hands.

“Tongtong.”

Gu Kai smiled faintly and called her name.

Tongtong stopped rubbing her eyes, looked over at him, and broke into a bright smile. “Daddy.”

“It’s still early. Do you want to sleep a bit longer?”

Gu Kai walked over, sat down at the edge of the bed, and gently pulled Tongtong into his arms, smoothing down her messy bed hair with a large, warm hand.

“No, I want Mommy.”

Tongtong shook her head, her bright eyes staring intently at Gu Kai.

She wanted her mom.

Gu Kai’s gaze hesitated for a moment. Looking at Tongtong’s face, which bore a slight resemblance to Bai Yiyi’s, he recalled the woman’s words from the night before. Pressing his lips together, he said softly, “Alright. After breakfast, Daddy will take you to see Mommy.”

Upon hearing this, Tongtong clapped her hands in delight and cheered, “See Mommy! Yay, see Mommy!”

At the breakfast table, Gu Kai informed his father, Gu Yan, that he would be taking Tongtong out later. Gu Yan gave a gentle reminder, “Wherever you go, let Old Liu drive you. Don’t let Tongtong sit by herself in the back seat—child safety seats are still not ideal.”

Gu Kai’s eyes flickered slightly. It was as if his father already knew who he intended to take Tongtong to see. Before he could respond, he heard his father add, “When you see Bai Yiyi’s mother, don’t overdo it. If you want to be with Bai Yiyi, try to accept the situation as it is.”
