Genetic Ascension

Chapter 2030: Half

Chapter 2030: Half

Alex shifted uncomfortably, his body looking for a way to leave. It was clear he really felt like Sylas would kill him. But that was when Sylas said something unexpected, something he never thought that he'd ever hear from Sylas.

"I won't kill you."

There was a calmness in Sylas' tone, almost like he was trying to... soothe him, and yet failing miserably.

Alex didn't even know what to do with this current sensory information. It was like everything he had known about the world had become a microcosm of insanity spinning in mind, swirling in various colors, and then coming out the wrong hole in a diarrhea of absolute nonsense.

He reached a hand forward and touched Sylas' forehead. Even the fact he succeeded in that left him in shock.

"Are you sure that you're Sylas Grimblade...? Who are you? You know, you've already killed me once, Legacy. There's no need to fuck with me just to end up screwing me over again, right? Just kill me and get it over with."

Sylas swatted Alex's hand away. "Answer the question."

"Holy shit." Alex was speechless. "That cyber horse dude said something about women and things getting fucked up. You must have gotten really fucked up. Let me guess-actually, maybe I shouldn't, I like my life the way it is."

Alex almost instantly thought of Nosphaleen. That was the most obvious ticking time bomb ever, and he also knew that a certain Dommy Mommy wasn't just going to let that slide either.

If he had had friends he could actually talk shit with, he just might have started taking bets on whether it would be Nosphaleen or Cassarae who broke first. He didn't know what the answer to that question was right now, but it didn't matter.

Whatever it was, it ended up hurting Sylas' brain to the point Alex was still not 100% sure whether or not the man had full control of his faculties at all.

Alex cleared his throat again. "So, how exactly did we meet?"

"If death is what you want, it can be arranged." Sylas said coldly.

Alex jumped up and laughed. "Ah, that's the Sylas I know. Okay, okay, okay. Maybe I've still been hiding secrets from you. You see, when you sign a System Oath, it ties your Will, but-."

Sylas' eyes narrowed. It seemed that he had overlooked something quite important.

System Oaths, System Contracts, and things of the like, were matters that were done under the, well... system. That much was obvious. What was also quite obvious was the fact that the system only functioned with the Will of the Real World.

Meaning, if there was a situation where Alex had had Demonic Will before Sylas forced him into a Contract, if he was clever enough in how he handled things, it was very much possible that he could have circumvented the Contract ahead of time and given himself some wiggle room.

Sylas had always felt that Alex was quite hard to deal with, but the potential he represented and the information he had knocking around in his head was enough that Sylas decided it was most definitely worth the risk to continue keeping him on.

Plus, Alex had always felt to know his place. At the very least, he was a lot more strategic and clever with how he hid things than Jala ever did.

The cherry on top was the fact that when Alex made a decision on how to do things or what to hide, he always made certain to ensure that he was never directly against or opposed to Sylas. If he did something that ended up stabbing the man in the back, he knew that even if he lived for a short time, he probably wouldn't be able to get away with it forever.

Old Brama had somewhat understood this, and thus when he decided to finally deal with Sylas-or rather when he had been forced to-he had struck with everything he had.

Yet, despite being a C-tier at the time, it had been useless.

Alex had seen people try to betray or deal with Sylas time and time again, and somehow he always came out on top. He felt that he would be a fool if he tried to do literally anything other than following the path he should.

And that path was... whatever the hell Sylas wanted.

The thing was that Alex also had his own ambitions, his own heart, his own desire to do things. He wasn't the sort that would just give up because of a tall mountain to climb.

So he had also carved out a small lot for himself, a bit of opportunity that he could try to take advantage of so that he could nibble at the edges.

Sylas ignored him a lot, but he was patient and calm, only taking as much as he dared to.

If not for how things went this time, he could have probably hidden this matter for a long while.

The thing with pulling the wool over Sylas' eyes was that it was nearly impossible to do so with some clever, 250 IQ play. Often it was simple things that he overlooked not because he was incompetent, but because he simply hadn't been raised in this world.

The things that Sylas overlooked the most were almost always the simplest things.

Well, that and the fact Sylas had a huge ego and he often liked to chase after the complicated solution to things. But Alex wasn't going to say that out loud either. He liked his little life the way it was now.

"I managed to circumvent the harder and more forceful restriction of our System Contract thanks to that. As for how I ended up with Demonic Will, that was from before any of this even happened in the first place. I've had it since I was born, probably. It's why Legacy has never been able to properly assess me.

"If I had to guess, I'm probably half human, half demon."

Sylas' pupils constricted into pinholes. This... did not make any sense at all.
