Chapter 2428 Order
Chapter 2428 Order
Sylas had come across enough Rune Masters by now that very few Paths still managed to hold his attention. Even the inheritances inside the Creation Tower had mostly left him indifferent, which was almost amusing considering how desperately people like Vaelith had fought over them. But this...
Time and Order were different.
The combination itself was interesting enough that Sylas stopped caring about winning the exchange as quickly as possible. The act of Time manipulation naturally introduced contradictions into reality. The moment you rewound an action, accelerated one event past another, or allowed different moments to overlap, the ordinary sequence of cause and effect stopped behaving the way it should.
If anything, it was closer to Chaos than it was Order, and the contradiction became even stranger when Runes were added to the equation. On their smallest scale, Runes already behaved much like quantum mechanics had to early humanity, where causality became less intuitive and outcomes could exist without following the paths people expected them to.
Runes were the smallest unit of existence, as were quantum particles to the former Earth. To bring Order from that...
Still, Caelum had somehow taken that instability, layered Time over it, then used Order to force the result into something coherent.
But that left Sylas wanting to see where it broke.
He raised one hand and drew his claw through the air, leaving a thin emerald Stroke behind it before a second crossed beneath the first. More followed without pause, Foundations taking shape and sliding against one another as Sylas deliberately refused to let the structure settle into a single stable state.
He could have used his several other Paths to make the exchange easier, but that would defeat the point. If Caelum had really built a Path capable of controlling the contradictions Time naturally created, Sylas wanted to pressure that exact foundation until either his own understanding failed or Caelum's did.
The first Rune folded backward through itself before it had even finished forming.
Caelum answered immediately, gold spreading outward from the mechanisms in his eyes as several ordered structures wrapped around the emerald formation. Instead of destroying the contradiction, he separated its past and present states and assigned both fixed positions where they could no longer interfere with one another.

That meant his Time Path was creating the very chaos his Order Path needed.
The two halves of Caelum's Path covered one another almost perfectly. Time introduced instability that made Order more useful, while Order repaired the consequences that would otherwise make Time dangerous to its own user.
It was elegant and clever, an endless feedback loop. But... it was also a contradiction in itself.
Sylas let the next several formations disappear beneath the gold without replacing them.
Caelum took advantage of the opening immediately, his Will surging forward until almost all of the emerald light vanished beneath ordered Runes. To anyone watching, it probably looked like Sylas was finally being overwhelmed.
But... while everyone else was only looking at the present state of the battlefield, Sylas was looking at both the present... and the past.
The tesseract in his eyes rotated as his attention reached backward through Caelum's own temporal structures, searching through the layers that had existed before the Order Path fully revealed itself, and then a carefully laid trap bloomed.
Sylas slowly raised a finger and touched a single Stroke. The golden Rune connected to it flickered.
A structure Caelum had already corrected suddenly recalled a previous state where no such correction existed, forcing its present Order to account for a past that claimed it should still be chaotic. That contradiction passed through the connected formations, then into the next layer.
Caelum had tied them together too perfectly, pulling their states together so that they were too reliant on one another, almost like a house built on cards.
Sylas drew one more Stroke, pulling his finger across the air as though to blow on it and te battlefield shifted.
Every ordered Rune began remembering its previous disorder at once, and the gold didn't collapse so much as contradict itself. Caelum's Will surged to force the competing states back into alignment, but that only gave the paradox more structure to spread through.
The same Order that had stabilized everything now carried the instability everywhere.
Caelum's mechanical eyes slipped out of rhythm.
Blood spilled from his mouth as his body jerked forward, and one knee struck the ground while the golden formations around him began flickering between what they were and what they had once been.
