Chapter 2447: Unchanged (1)
The Scorpion heart was far too large to fit above Sylas’ palm in any ordinary sense, its enormous mass suspended several meters over him while telekinesis held it in place. Each beat sent a dull pressure through the room, vessels thicker than Sylas’ body contracting around blood that should have stopped flowing long ago, yet the more important movement came from within him as his Greed Seed stirred in response.
Sylas allowed only the faintest thread of the Seed’s influence to reach upward, and crimson light spread through the heart almost at once. The resonance was powerful enough that anyone else might have mistaken the two Wills for the same thing, but once Sylas began comparing them directly, the differences became more useful than the similarities.
Keyesen hadn’t carried the original Scorpion’s Will. Several Beast Wills within his Spirit Beast body had converged closely enough upon that ancient existence that the universe accepted the result and allowed the Virtue of Greed to bloom, which meant Sylas now possessed both sides of a problem no Spirit Beast had ever been able to consciously solve.
The heart above him contained the source, while the Greed Seed within him contained the successful approximation. Once Sylas’ Runeweaver Eyes brightened, he overlaid the two structures within his perception and removed everything that matched, leaving only the discrepancies suspended before him like errors in an otherwise perfect equation.
It was an inverse problem, and one Sylas understood well enough from the sciences of Earth. If the original signal and a reconstructed output were both known, the exact machinery between them didn’t necessarily need to be observed directly. Enough differences between input and result could reveal what transformations must have occurred along the way.
That was the thread Keyesen had unknowingly left behind.
His several Beast Wills hadn’t simply piled together until they resembled a Scorpion, because if accumulation alone were sufficient, any collection of Wills could eventually reproduce any ancient Beast with enough brute force.
Something within the Spirit Beast Race had filtered, separated, and recombined them into a structure stable enough to mimic one cohesive existence rather than collapse beneath competing identities.
This was how Keyesen, a God Beast of their Race, had managed to use the combination of his Scorpion Wills to mimic enough of the original Scorpion and trigger the formation of a Virtue of Greed he couldn’t even begin to deserve.
Sylas pushed deeper into the comparison, following the original Scorpion’s Will as it moved through the heart’s foundational Runes. There was no meaningful division between its Greed, violence, stubbornness, survival instinct, or physical nature; all of those things emerged from one complete existence and therefore moved through the heart as parts of the same whole.
His Greed Seed looked different.
Tiny discontinuities appeared throughout its structure, each one so subtle Sylas doubted he would have found them without the original heart as a reference. One section reproduced the Scorpion’s refusal to release what it considered its own, another reflected its willingness to destroy in order to take, while still others carried persistence, self-preservation, aggression, and smaller traits that bridged the spaces between them.
Keyesen’s Beast Wills had supplied different portions of the same answer, but possession of the pieces alone still couldn’t explain the result. The more Sylas studied the intersections, the clearer it became that the Spirit Beast Race itself had acted as the machinery that allowed those fragments to cooperate.
His earlier comparison to protein folding had been close, though not complete enough. A protein could be made of the same amino acids and still behave differently depending on how it folded, but the Spirit Beast Race seemed closer to a system with many natural modes of resonance, each one waiting for the correct Will to excite it.
A structure struck at the wrong frequency dispersed energy chaotically, while a natural mode caused the entire system to move together. The Spirit Beast Race appeared to have evolved with an absurd number of such stable modes already built into its foundation, which was why one body could carry countless Beast Wills without those Wills all demanding expression at the same time.
A Scorpion Will didn’t need to rewrite the Race into a Scorpion every time it surfaced. It activated one arrangement of Race Runes, changing how Genes, Blood Essence, and Will related to one another until the body became compatible with that mode while the countless alternatives remained latent beneath it.
That was why most Spirit Beasts could carry many Wills but truly follow only one.
God Beasts were the exception, and Sylas finally understood why their existence was so rare. They weren’t simply Spirit Beasts with enough Willpower to endure several complete Beast identities fighting inside the same body. Their internal architecture allowed several resonant modes to remain active without their interference patterns destroying one another.
That explained Keyesen better than anything Sylas had considered before.
His Beast Wills had been individually incomplete, but the overlap between their active modes produced a higher-order resonance that approached the original Scorpion closely enough to satisfy the conditions for the Virtue of Greed.
The universe hadn’t been fooled into believing Keyesen was the Scorpion. It had simply judged that his reconstruction had crossed whatever threshold mattered.
Sylas’ gaze sharpened as that distinction settled into place, because the same principle changed the problem of Dragon and Phoenix entirely. He didn’t need to reproduce either one perfectly, nor did he need to transform himself into a creature that could somehow match myths whose limits constantly shifted.
He needed to create internal structures reality would accept as capable of carrying them.
Dragon would be the more immediately dangerous of the two, its concept built around dominance and the forcing of one interpretation above all others. Any resonant mode designed for it would naturally push beyond its boundaries, attempting to convert neighboring structures until there was no distinction left between the Dragon mode and Sylas himself.
Phoenix created the opposite problem, but not a smaller one. If Sylas represented change, evolution, and rebirth correctly, then its mode couldn’t remain satisfied with a stable configuration for long, meaning a structure designed to contain it would eventually begin modifying itself and everything connected to it.
One wanted all states to collapse into itself, while the other refused to remain in any state at all.
