Fang Heng listened to Zane’s explanation, silently deep in thought.
Indeed, the missions released by the game seemed to carry great hostility toward the spawns.
If the Black Fog World had truly been created, then was Ymir the old man he had seen in his vision?
"Brother Fang Heng, part of your power also came from the Black Fog Game, didn’t it?"
"That’s right." Fang Heng nodded slightly. "I need to return to the game for a while. It may take some time. What about you? What will you do?"
"Of course I’ll go with you."
"You?"
"Hehe, Brother Fang Heng, I admit you’re strong. I probably couldn’t take even one move from you. But when it comes to tricks and small techniques, I might know a few things you don’t."
As Zane spoke, he took a dark jade stone from his backpack and tossed it to Fang Heng.
"Take this, and let’s go!"
As soon as Fang Heng caught the jade pendant, Zane turned into a mass of shadow and merged into the stone.
[Hint: The player has obtained item-Unknown jade stone.]
Description: An unknown jade stone. You can sense an ominous power emanating from within.
"Interesting."
Fang Heng examined the jade stone in his hand. He couldn’t detect even the slightest trace of Zane’s aura and couldn’t help but click his tongue in surprise. With a flick of his wrist, he placed it into his game backpack.
Whoosh!
Fang Heng closed his eyes. Before him, the reflection of a door of bones appeared.
At the same time, black fog rapidly spread beneath his feet, enveloping him completely.
...
When he opened his eyes again, Fang Heng had already returned to the outer camp by the Nether River in the Death Realm.
Whoosh!
The jade stone in his backpack floated out automatically, levitating in midair as dark mist flowed continuously from it.
Zane reformed from the mist, regaining his human shape and appearing beside Fang Heng once more.
"Phew, so this is the Netherworld you mentioned?"
Zane sensed the fluctuations in the aura of the Death Realm, looking around with interest.
"No, what we’re in now is the Death Realm. Beyond that fusion space lies the actual Netherworld region."
Fang Heng raised his hand and pointed toward the world fusion passage not far away.
"Not bad," Zane murmured, recalling old memories, "I remember that long ago, there were legends about the Netherworld, that the souls of the dead would all return there and enter reincarnation. But at some point, that belief just faded away."
"Mr. Fang Heng, you’ve come at the right time."
Kotal had received word from the Dark Clan that Fang Heng had arrived, so he hurried over with his team. "Together with the instructors from the Necromancer Association, we’ve been conducting in-depth research on the inscriptions copied from the stone tablet, and we’ve made a major discovery."
Zane curiously observed the Dark Clan.
These gray-skinned creatures intrigued him.
"According to our translation, the Netherworld did once have a powerful race. The translated text refers to them as the Clan of Death."
Kotal’s voice carried a tone of reverence, "They were the rulers of the Netherworld. They established a complete system of order within it and held control over death and reincarnation."
"The structures we found can be understood as naturally formed temples, not creations of the Clan of Death. These temples may be destroyed, but as long as the Netherworld exists, they will gradually reform over time."
"The Clan of Death believed each temple to be a focal point of the Netherworld’s power."
Kotal continued, "Through these temples, the Clan of Death could gather the power of faith from across the Netherworld, permanently increasing their strength. Additionally, depending on each temple’s size and scale, they possessed unique conversion abilities."
"Hey, Brother Fang Heng," Zane interrupted, "this sounds an awful lot like how our Evil Gods advance."
Kotal gave Zane a surprised glance before nodding, "Yes, the temples’ special conversion ability is also called ’leveling up.’ Combined with certain prayers and a large amount of faith power, a temple can transform qualified believers or Netherworld creatures into higher-level combat units."
Fang Heng fell silent, thoughtful.
The God Clan, the Clan of Death...
Both were races that strengthened themselves through faith.
"Any more clues about the Clan of Death?"
"None so far. The stone tablet doesn’t contain much information. Over the past two months, we’ve only conducted small-scale explorations in the Netherworld. The highest-level creature we’ve encountered so far is the Death Knight. As for the Clan of Death mentioned in the inscriptions, we haven’t found any trace of them."
Kotal looked somewhat apologetic, "We also examined the outer seal of the stone tablet in detail. The Dark Clan’s skills in alchemy and sealing arts are limited, so we haven’t made much progress."
"Interesting."
Zane looked at Fang Heng and said, "Brother Fang Heng, how about we go take a look ourselves? Maybe I’ll find something."
"Alright."
Fang Heng waved his hand forward, summoning several Death Knights, then leapt up to ride behind one of them.
Oh?
It was Zane’s first time seeing a Death Knight in spirit form, and his eyes gleamed with excitement. He quickly transformed into a shadow and leapt onto another Death Knight.
"Let’s go."
The Death Knights accelerated instantly, reaching their top speed as they carried the two of them through the Netherworld fusion passage.
Out of the corner of his eye, Fang Heng glanced at Zane.
The Evil God did have some ability.
Even the necromancer instructors needed heavy protection when entering the Netherworld, and even the Dark Clan, who were born in the Death Realm, struggled with the dense aura of death. Yet Zane seemed completely unaffected, casually passing through the Netherworld’s domain.
After ten minutes of high-speed travel, a faint silhouette of a structure emerged through the thick death fog ahead.
Zane studied the temple shrouded in the aura of death and nodded. "Fang Heng, this thing looks somewhat similar to the God Clan’s temples."
The Death Knights stopped before the building.
Horan, an instructor of the undead council and an expert in linguistics, was leading a research team inside the temple. Hearing the commotion outside, they stood and went to investigate.
Seeing Fang Heng, they came out and greeted him respectfully.
"President Fang Heng."
"Instructor."
Fang Heng clasped his fists toward them and said, "This is Zane. He’s also interested in the temple and wanted to take a look. Hopefully, he might notice something."
The instructors were surprised that Zane could stand exposed in the Netherworld without any protection. They studied him with curiosity before returning his gesture politely.
Together, they entered the temple.
At first sight of the seal on the stone tablet, Zane’s heart skipped a beat. A wave of unpleasant memories surged in his mind, and he immediately turned to look at Fang Heng.
"You set me up."
"What do you mean?"
"Brother Fang, the God Clan’s aura on this thing is so obvious. You must have noticed it long before I did, and you still brought me here?"
