Simultaneously with Greed’s voice, something strange happened to the zombies controlled by the high elves.
[What’s going on here!?]
[Why aren’t they listening to me?]
[Stop! Don’t come over here!]
The zombies began to ignore orders and move on their own.
『That worked.』
[What did you do exactly?]
『I jammed the connection between the High Elves and the zombies.』
[You can do that?]
『I interfered with their orders. Because of that, the instructions were mistranslated and sent to the zombies.』
[Is that why the zombies are acting so strangely?]
『Correct. While they’re confused, let’s head for the laboratory.』
Greed said, jamming the last big one Roy was controlling.
Cerberus immediately roared and attacked the high elves.
[What is going on here! Stay calm, Cerberus!]
Cerberus, completely refusing to listen to Roy’s orders, went on a rampage. Even my guards, who had taken the situation seriously, came running out.
50 zombies, Cerberus, and even the beasts we’d cornered were rampaging, and the situation was spiraling out of control.
『There’s no one guarding us anymore. Let’s go, Fate!』
[Yep!]
I left the area, fleeing the zombies that were attacking us.
I knew the location of the laboratory, so I headed straight for it, without getting lost in the dark forest. On the way, I asked Greed how he’d managed to jam the elves’ control. ȓаNỒBĘs
『The connection between the high elves and zombies was similar to my Crossing with Fate. You understand that too, because of your connection with the spirit Belial. Perhaps I’m a being similar to spirits! Well, I didn’t think it would go this well.』
[So you just did it on the fly!]
『A bit late to say that. It’s always been like that when it’s just me and you anyway.』
That’s true… he’s right.
Our only redeeming quality is momentum. Even so, he could have told me about the plan in advance.
As I sulked a bit, Greed said with a laugh.
『Fate, you feelings can be easily seen through via your expression and body language. Had I told you the plan in advance, there was a risk that Roy would notice.』
[I feel like you’re overestimating Roy a little.]
『He might have a few screw loose, but his intuition seems to be quite sharp. Better be careful than sorry.』
In that case, we need to get some information about spirits from Roy’s lab before the commotion dies down.
[I can see the entrance to the laboratory.]
『Leave the rest to me』
I held Greed over the authentication machine to open the entrance to the basement.
『Hmm… I see. Yosh, it’s open.』
The thick door slowly began to open. My trusty partner is a lifesaver.
『There aren’t any surveillance cameras outside, but there are quite a few inside. Wait a moment.』
[What are you doing?]
『I’ll hack into it and have it repeat the same footage. That way, we won’t notice if we pass by the security camera.』
Greed is a can-do-all Black Sword, despite how he carries himself. His usual careless personality makes for a striking contrast.
『Perfect. Let’s go!』
I ran down the damp stairs and into the large space where the elevator was located.
Just like when I visited yesterday, there was no sign of the high elves.
[It’s quiet.]
『They’re probably else where in preparation for the war with humans. This place is too cramped for mass production.』
[Are you talking about zombies?]
『Probably. This is a basic research site. As we saw above, the zombies have already been perfected. All that’s left is the mass production phase.』
[Where did they go to do something so horrible…]
『I don’t know. Roy wouldn’t be able to see that far.』
While talking with Greed, I took the elevator and arrived in front of Roy’s lab.
It was eerily quiet, almost to the point that I felt like something was up.
I held Greed over the authentication machine and opened the door.
『Everything’s going well.』
[The zombies in the container are gone.]
『I guess they took the zombies here out for tonight’s hunt.』
With the contents of the containers removed, the lab was no longer a nauseating, eerie space. Only the light from a lone terminal illuminated the room. I stood in front of it and held Greed over it.
[Are you sure it’s going to be fine?]
『Yeah, it’ll be fine. It’ll just take a little while to extract the information.』
Greed said, but he seemed to be having trouble.
[What’s wrong?]
『The security is pretty noddy. Every piece of information is protected.』
[It’s almost time. Roy’ll get suspicious if we don’t go back.]
『I know, but you want every bit of information, like you always do.』
Rushing Greed would only distract him from his work.
All I could do was wait. Every second felt infinitely longer.
Suddenly, I glanced at the empty container. I felt like something moved inside.
Or is it just my imagination…?
I left Greed on the terminal and approached closer.
[It’s empty.]
『What’s wrong, Fate?』
[It looked like something was here, but it seems I was mistaken.]
Perhaps my haste was causing me to see things. Perhaps the cursed nature of this lab made it worse.
I’d sit at a table and calm down for a bit. As I started to walk,
『Fate! Come over here slowly from where you are!』
[What’s wrong?]
『Just do as I say!』
Greed’s loud voice told me that something bad was happening behind me.
I could hear the thumping of something’s heartbeat.
When I instinctively turned around at the sound,
[What… is this mass of flesh!?]
A head-sized mass of flesh appeared in the air, extending several tentacle-like arms.
Then, it slowly approached me.
As I tried to go over to Greed, the mass of flesh followed suit.
[It’s reacting to my movements.]
『Get your hands on me quickly. This isn’t the time for information. Look at the floor, Fate!』
[What!?]
Anything that touched the mass of flesh’s tentacles was dissolved into a mush. It was then absorbed and became part of the mass.
[It’s getting bigger. It’s growing!?]
『That’s Jasmine, the remains of a beast-man implanted with the Undine spirit, as described in Roy’s information. It was recorded that it was discarded due to being out of control, but… that was just a pretense; they kept it hidden.』
[Sounds like the kind of thing Roy would do.]
I slipped past the tentacles trying to engulf me and escaped through the lab door.
Then, countless tentacles collided with the door, which had just closed automatically. The impact created a large bump, but they didn’t penetrate.
[Greed, lock the door!]
『On it.』
Just in time, I managed to hold Greed over the authentication machine and lock the door.
『Let’s get out of here quickly. It’s dangerous.』
[I know that.]
I quickly boarded the elevator going up and pressed the control button to close the door.
『This is bad! The door’s going to burst open.』
Having consumed the contents of the lab, Jasmine set its sights on me as I boarded the elevator. It must have been very upset about not being able to eat me earlier.
『You’re a big favorite among zombies it seem, not only with Cerberus.』
[I’m not exactly tasty food, though.]
Jasmine stretched out its tentacles and charged towards me at full speed.
A loud crash echoed throughout the room.
The elevator doors closed faster than it could reach. I took a breather as the elevator began to move upward.
[Do you think it’s give up the chase?]
『That depends on how hungry Jasmine is.』
A terrible sound of destruction continued from below. It seemed that it was indeed very upset about not being able to eat me.
