Chapter 431: The Perfect Vampire Hunter [1/2]
Before the fight began, Gabriel had held a certain level of respect for Dominic because of the latter’s strength and ruthless maturity, his willingness to sacrifice anything to achieve his goal.
Gabriel felt they were very similar in their thinking process, however, as the fight continued, he was beginning to dislike the latter’s lousy personality.
’Talking too much really makes you lose the respect you once had for someone,’ Gabriel thought, slowly approaching Dominic.
Dominic felt a ringing sensation as a result of the fierce headbutt from Gabriel, which caused his head to fly back at high speed, breaking a few bones and bending his neck into an unnatural position.
’What the hell was that strength...’ Dominic cursed in his heart as he straightened his neck, bringing it back to its original position.
"Strong," Dominic said, taking a fighting stance once again as he added in a low yet loud voice. "You fight more like a beast than I do."
At those words, Gabriel came to an abrupt stop, his eyes flashing sharply.
More like a beast than I am.
Those words rang in his head. Why would one say that... there was only one explanation. Was Dominic subconsciously referring to himself as a beast? That was the only thought that came to mind.
First it was the blood ring, the uncanny regeneration speed, and now this.
Everything was coming together, but Gabriel did not want to believe it. Vampires were supposed to be far from here, somewhere on the non human continent. They were creatures that lived in darkness and were allergic to the sun itself.
Yes, it was currently night, but reports had been given of how Dominic moved about in broad daylight as well.
’Now that I’m close, I can see it. His skin is paler than usual, full dark clothing and...’
Gabriel was unable to finish his thought process when a small smile slowly spread across Dominic’s handsome features, revealing white, sharp canine teeth at the side of his mouth.
When he saw this, there was no shock on Gabriel’s expression, only a cold acceptance of the truth standing right beside him.
At that moment, Seraphina hovered closer, her eyes widening as she gasped, her mouth slightly open, and for a moment she looked like she had forgotten how to breathe.
"Now that I’m here, I can feel his aura... he’s..."
"A vampire," Gabriel said, his eyes never leaving Dominic as he completed her sentence before she could. "I’ve seen it for myself."
"H how... how did he get here?" A myriad of thoughts flashed across Seraphina’s head.
As an ancient vampire who had lost most of her memories, she had been living on fragments and instinct. She had wanted answers. She had wanted clues. She had wanted to meet someone from her kind who could explain what she used to be.
But seeing Dominic up close made her feel conflicted in a way she did not expect. A part of her wanted Gabriel to end him immediately, because the scent on Dominic’s aura felt wrong. Another part of her wanted him alive, because even a twisted vampire was still a vampire, and if she forced words out of him, she might finally understand what her "home" even meant.
Dominic wiped the blood at the corner of his mouth and laughed lightly, as if the pain was only an inconvenience. He straightened his back, cracked his neck again, and his wounds began to close.
Gabriel’s eyes remained on Dominic, and his grip on the greatsword tightened just a little. He did not fear vampires as a concept, but he respected what they represented in this world: a race that treated humans as food, a race that had their own territory far away from the human continent.
And after spending some time with Seraphina, he learned that not all of them were inherently bad.
However, the one in front of him was.
"What is a vampire like you doing so far from home?" Gabriel finally spoke.
Dominic’s smile widened, showing those fangs again without shame. He tilted his head slightly, as if Gabriel had asked something funny.
"And what are you doing here as well?" Dominic replied, his tone casual, almost mocking. "If you are looking for who belongs where, then you should answer first."
Gabriel’s brows drew together. For a brief moment, genuine confusion crossed his face because the words did not connect. He was human, and Dominic speaking like that made it sound like Gabriel was the one who did not belong.
Before Gabriel could respond, Seraphina moved closer and spoke quickly, her voice only audible to him.
"I think he’s referring to the blood attack earlier," she said, eyes fixed on Dominic. "The blood rope, the projectile. They assumed it was you."
Gabriel’s gaze flickered for half a second, and then he understood why Dominic had been staring at him like a puzzle. He raised his voice slightly, letting Dominic hear it.
"I’m not a vampire. You’re imagining things."
Dominic’s smile faded into a frown, like he had heard a lie that insulted him, and he scoffed.
"You expect me to believe that? That blood control you showed earlier isn’t normal. That is royal bloodline control. That is not something a human can borrow. Tell that lie to a kid."
Seraphina’s eyes widened at the words royal bloodline. The phrase pulled at her instincts.
Gabriel’s expression did not change, but his thoughts moved fast. It finally clicked why Dominic had climbed so high, why he had dominated both eastern camps, why his heart had looked cold while people died around him. If Dominic was a vampire hiding among humans, then compassion was never part of the plan.
"That explains a lot," Gabriel said, his tone flat. "How you climbed the ranks. Why you don’t care about the lives you take. You’re not one of them, so why would you mourn them. Still, I’ll repeat what I said before. I’m not one of your kind."
Dominic’s eyes narrowed again, and this time there was real irritation in them.
"You keep saying you’re human," Dominic said slowly. "But humans don’t stand in front of me like this. Those weaklings don’t break my storm and force me into close combat. Humans don’t carry that kind of blood command."
Around them, the surviving fighters kept their distance, because everyone could tell the two of them had entered a zone where a stray hit would mean death.
"What are they talking about? Can you hear them?" Alice asked Sophie.
To that, the latter simply shook her head. "I wish I could."
With the disruption of the blood ring, there was no longer any wide area attack forcing both sides to keep moving. Everyone had stopped fighting and was simply watching to see what the outcome between the two would be.
