Chapter 508: The confidence of a Dead Man

Chapter 508: The confidence of a Dead Man

Even without the White Phantom mask, the blindfolded man had identified him through the scent his summon tracked earlier. That alone told Gabriel this man was more troublesome than the average killer the Black Star Clan sent out.

Annoyance flickered across Gabriel’s face for only a moment. He hated being cornered right after escaping one monster only to land before another.

The first Black Star member looked Gabriel up and down, and a mocking smile slowly spread across his face. He folded his arms and shook his head once, clearly pleased with what he was seeing.

"So it really is you," he said. "Even without that White Phantom mask, you still got found in the end. We did not even need to do much. You practically dragged yourself right into our hands."

He clicked his tongue and looked toward the castle above them.

"All that sneaking around, all that noise, and in the end you still dropped down here half dead. Quite the assassin’s work, if you ask me. Save us the trouble, weaken the target, and hand him over."

Gabriel did not answer right away. The sight of Black Star members should have raised alarm, but instead it only irritated him further.

His body was lying in a pool of blood, but his eyes were still steady.

Slowly, Gabriel checked his status.

His health points had dropped into the low hundreds. Not long ago, they had been in the seven hundreds. The pressure from the king, the broken bones, and the fall from the castle had torn through most of it in one night.

"Tch," he muttered.

The number irritated him. He had walked into the castle with enough health to trade against strong experts if needed. Now a silent presence and one fall had nearly reduced him to scraps. That alone was enough to leave a bitter taste in his mouth. His mood was terrible.

He remained on the ground and let his breathing stay rough.

From the outside, he looked finished. Blood covered his clothes. One arm was bent badly. His legs had not fully recovered either. To anyone with weaker nerves, he would look like a man already halfway inside the grave.

The first Black Star member seemed to think the same.

He mistook Gabriel’s silence for helplessness, and that mistake cost him everything.

He stepped closer with a more relaxed posture, one hand hanging loosely by his side. His earlier caution had almost disappeared, and even his breathing turned smoother.

"What now?" he asked with a sneer. "Still planning to fight? You can barely stand."

Gabriel kept his gaze on him and said nothing.

That silence made the man snort. "Look at you, White Phantom, hunted all over the city, ending up like a broken dog under a hill. I expected more."

He took another step forward.

That was a fatal oversight.

Gabriel moved immediately.

The motion was sudden and brutal. His body exploded upward from the ground with force that the man never expected from someone in that condition. Even injured, Gabriel’s Strength still stood above five hundred, and at close range, that difference was fatal.

His fist drove straight into the Black Star member’s chest.

BANG!

There was a sickening impact.

The man’s chest caved inward under the punch, and the force burst through his back a moment later in a spray of blood. His body locked up where it stood, the mocking look still stuck on his face while shock flooded his eyes.

He did not even get to scream.

Blood ran from his mouth as he looked down weakly, then back at Gabriel, as if his mind still could not accept what had happened.

A second later, his body went limp.

He died standing.

Even in death, the disbelief remained on his face.

Gabriel pulled his blood covered arm back slowly, his own breathing turning harsher for a moment. Blood was all over his hand now, mixed with his own, and his body swayed once before he forced himself steady.

Across from him, the blindfolded man did not react, nor did he rush forward in anger.

His head only turned slightly, as if he was observing Gabriel from head to toe through the blindfold. The ruined arm. The slightly bent posture. The blood everywhere. The fact that he was still standing despite injuries that should have finished most people. He noticed everything.

"Interesting," the man said quietly.

Gabriel looked at him coldly.

The blindfolded man lowered his gaze toward the corpse of his companion, then back to Gabriel.

"I will not make the same mistake," he said and raised one hand.

A magic circle appeared beside him, and from it leaped a dark hound with sharp teeth and burning eyes. Another circle opened on the other side, and a giant serpent slid out, its body thick and long enough to crush a man in one coil.

Neither beast attacked immediately.

They only watched Gabriel, waiting.

Gabriel’s legs trembled once under his own weight. His vision had grown blurrier, and for a second, it looked like he might fall. Yet a faint smile slowly appeared on his bloodstained face.

That smile startled the blindfolded man.

"You should have run," Gabriel said hoarsely. "The moment your partner died, you should have run."

The summoner’s brows furrowed slightly. For the first time, his calm shifted.

It was subtle and would have been easily missed, but it was there. A man standing at death’s door should not still be able to speak like that.

...as if he was confident he would walk out of this alive.

Without another word, the blindfolded man snapped his fingers.

Two more circles opened.

Another hound landed low to the ground with saliva hanging from its mouth. Beside it appeared a second serpent, slightly smaller than the first, but still large enough to pose a threat.

The air around them grew heavier at once as the summons focused their killing intent on Gabriel.

The summoner gave a small nod and said calmly,

"Now it is fair."
