Chapter 660: You Want to Get In? Then I’ll Let You In [3]
“Beside, you should understand better than I do why they simultaneously attacked the Fifth Outpost Sector, the Seventh Outer Outpost, and the southeast.”
Edgar’s eyes narrowed. “The attacks on the Fifth Outpost Sector and the southeast will draw away the mobile forces responsible for reinforcing the western and southern regions. Once the Seventh Outer Outpost requests reinforcements, the two nearest patrol units will also pass through the northwest.”
If the three attack sites were marked on a map of the entire Sacred Forest, their distribution was not simply designed to create the greatest possible chaos.
The three attacks were drawing the elves’ rapidly deployable reinforcement forces in three different directions.
And once those forces moved away, a temporary gap would appear in the northwest, an area few elves approached in the first place.
“Northwest.” Edgar’s eyes widened in realisation. “They’re drawing our people away from the northwest!”
Gabriel didn’t think he was wrong. The enemy’s infiltration operation had most likely already begun. Even if they immediately dispatched elves toward the northwest, they might not be able to seal the ancient altar before those people arrived.
Worse, doing so might alert them and make them realize that their route had already been exposed.
Gabriel had no intention of creating a new opening.
He intended to leave the existing opening exactly as it was.
Edgar immediately turned around.
“I’ll inform Aelira!”
“Don’t tell too many people. If you suddenly reinforce the northwest, those people will know their route has been exposed.”
Gabriel lowered Matthew and leaned him against an ancient tree. He then rolled his shoulders, and a series of crisp cracks immediately sounded from his bones.
“They want to sneak inside? Then let them.”
Edgar looked at him. “And after that?”
Gabriel smiled. “Close the door.”
Just those two words were enough for Edgar to understand.
They would not stop the enemy from entering the Sacred Forest.
On the contrary, they would wait until those people had truly passed through the passage and completely lost their chance to retreat before sealing the exit behind them.
That way, not only could they capture the people actually responsible for searching for Sophie, they might even be able to use them to uncover more of the Holy Church’s preparations hidden throughout the forest.
“How many people do you need?” Edgar asked.
“You.”
“Who else?”
“Me.”
“…”
Edgar stared at him, dumbfounded, but he seemed to understand Gabriel reason so he asked.
“What about Matthew?”
Gabriel lowered his head and glanced at him.
An extremely ominous feeling instantly rose in the cardinal’s heart.
“He’s coming too, of course.”
“I’m not going!” Mathew quickly said..
Gabriel hoisted him onto his shoulder again.
“No one asked for your opinion.”
“Gabriel, you have no idea how many people went in! If they dare enter the core of the Sacred Forest, their strength definitely won’t be comparable to those Holy Church knights from before. If there’s even a champion level among them…”
“Wouldn’t that be even better?”
Gabriel interrupted him directly.
Matthew froze. The smile in Gabriel’s eyes only grew more obvious.
The higher the target’s level, the greater their value to him.
Since entering the Sacred Forest, most of Gabriel’s large scale Extraction Point gains had come from the enormous goblin armies.
But even now, he had yet to encounter a truly high level target capable of giving him an enormous amount of profit within a short period of time.
If the Holy Church was really preparing to personally deliver several high level powerhouses straight to him, what reason did he have to refuse?
Gabriel’s footsteps paused slightly.
The smile on his face had become almost impossible to conceal.
Seeing his expression, Edgar immediately felt a familiar sense of foreboding.
…
The sounds of battle coming from three directions grew increasingly intense.
More and more elves began moving toward the forest perimeter.
Yet no one knew that beneath the ancient altar in the northwest of the Sacred Forest, abandoned for several decades, a cracked stone slab was slowly sliding aside.
Creak…
Large amounts of dust fell continuously.
Behind the stone slab was an underground passage that had not been opened for at least several decades.
Within the darkness, the first figure slowly emerged, followed by two others.
They wore no robes belonging to the Holy Church, nor did they carry any sacred emblems.
Every one of them wore dark gray combat clothing without a single identifying mark. Even the surfaces of their weapons had undergone special treatment, making it impossible to determine their faction from their equipment.
They were twelve people in total.
Finally, a man wearing a silver mask emerged from the passage.
Including him, there were thirteen infiltrators.
The silver masked man crouched and pressed one hand against the ground.
A faint white light seeped into the soil.
Several seconds later, he opened his eyes again.
“The elves on the perimeter are moving.”
Someone behind him asked, “What about the target?”
The silver masked man raised his head.
In the depths of the forest ahead, where no road had originally existed, countless trees were slowly shifting. The intertwined roots underground also seemed to be affected by some invisible force, tightening and trembling slightly, yet they did not completely seal the surrounding area.
The man frowned slightly.
Soon, all movement ceased once again.
The forest returned to silence, as though nothing had ever happened.
“The earlier World Tree fluctuation has been confirmed.” He said, “The target is in the core region. Proceed according to the original plan. Use the ancient passage and the chaos created by the war on the perimeter to bypass the elven patrol network. Do not engage the elves in the core region directly.”
He paused for half a second. “Once her bloodline is confirmed, immediately inform the Saintess.”
Thirteen figures simultaneously disappeared into the forest.
However, none of them noticed that behind an ancient tree farther away, an utterly ordinary looking gray bird was quietly perched on a branch.
Deep within its pupils, an extremely faint trace of mana flickered.
Several kilometers away, Edgar suddenly opened his eyes. “They’re inside.”
