Chapter 407 – Confronting the Enemy
As I walked down the bridge to the deck, I found the riflemen checking the condition of the rifles they had used in the battle earlier.
“Ted, how are the men holding up?”
“No problem. We will soon finish replenishing ammunition.”
As he said this, a metal ammunition box containing a magic crystal stone and warheads that seemed to be filled with magic power was brought in. The magical riflemen did not rush to the supplies but kept an orderly pace as they carried out their replenishment.
“It’s good to see that the soldiers seem calm as well.”
“Compared to the wyverns, we had an easy opponent. The target is small and hard to hit, but it seems fragile and vulnerable. Wyverns can take a bullet or two and still attack, but flying biters don’t seem to have that kind of life force.”
“I see. But there is a possibility that they will overwhelm us with their numbers, so you must be on your guard.”
“Of course.”
Ted nodded confidently, and I nodded back, this time heading to Darko’s side, who was in communication with the dragon rider apprentice.
“Thank you for your hard work. Is everything alright?”
“Yes, Your Excellency. Everything is fine for now.”
Darko, who carries two magic rifles on her back in a specially made holster for magic rifles, nods and answers. She is a multi-armed person and can handle these two rifles at the same time. During the training flight in the Sorel Mountains, it was quite a spectacle to see her shoot two rifles with six arms while reloading them at high speed.
“They are the most important people to coordinate with the elite of the Dragonis Mountain Kingdom. Please protect them.”
“Leave it to me. They only have one finger―I mean, they don’t have any fingers, right? I won’t let them touch a single hair on their head.”
“That’s encouraging. From their point of view, everything in our army may seem new, even strange, but it’s not a waste to know that there are people like that. Maybe that is why they were assigned to this ship as liaison officers. You should see as much as you can without interfering with the mission.”
“Yes, thank you very much.”
The two liaison officers from the Dragonis Mountain Kingdom aboard this ship are both quite young. Perhaps they are newcomers who are expected to hold important positions in the Dragonis Mountain Kingdom’s army in the future, I think. Well, there seems to be no harm in getting to know each other.
“I guess it’s about time. Well, I’ll go back to the bridge. Don’t die.”
“””Yes!”””
Hearing the answer from Darko and the two young liaison officers, I return to the bridge. The military officers observing the battle do not stay on the bridge this time but come down to the deck. I have told them to listen to my instructions during the battle, but I wonder how far they will listen. I hope they don’t get in the way.

I return to the bridge. I can feel the mages looking at me a little coldly, but I pretend not to notice. I am sorry. But I think it was necessary. It’s going to be a long fight after this.
“Is there any reaction?”
“Not yet―no, I’m detecting magical responses. The number is… numerous. There may be three times as many as before.”
“That’s a problem. All personnel to Type 1 battle positions. The number of enemies is estimated to be nearly three times as many as before. Do not let your guard down. Beware of misfiring in a melee. Have hollow point rounds ready.”
While communicating this to the entire ship via the magic transmission tube, I also summoned various weapons from my shortcut and checked their loading status and remaining ammunition. Well, in this situation, the assault rifle is the ironclad choice, but considering the power at close range, the shotgun is also an option. A submachine gun that uses regular pistol rounds may not have enough firepower. It is undeniable that the ammunition is not powerful enough for a living person who is not wearing bulletproof equipment against a real monster. Should I make a PDW with high-penetration bullets next time? I think I can do it because I can use slime material as a polymer substitute.
“Kosuke, what about the harpy bombers?”
“Still on standby. We’ll have them prepare the bombing equipment, but the air combat equipment isn’t ready yet. Well, I think it’s a bad idea to let them actually fight in the air, even if their air combat equipment is ready.”
“Is that so?”
“Yes, of course. I think their main focus should be on reconnaissance and ground attack. As for securing air superiority, I think we should look for another way. The air combat equipment we are developing now is only for self-defense.”
“I see. We will discuss that later. Right now, the battle at hand is important.”
“That is true.”
I put my assault rifle, which uses powerful 7.62mm rounds, into the shortcut and turned my attention to the mage in charge of the magic radar.
“They will soon be in sight of Chief Isla. We have about five minutes to start the engagement.”
“Yes, thank you. Let’s see.”
With the telescope, I looked in the port direction of the magic airship. Yes, I can’t see anything yet. But Isla seemed to see it.
“I see it. That way.”
“That way, huh? Yes, I see it. I see it. Helmsman, steer―OK, there they are.”
The magic airship is equipped with a wind-magic propulsion system for steering, so it can change direction while stationary in the air.
“Enemy approaching from the port side. Prepare for battle. Spectator military officers participating in the battle should move to assist the magic riflemen so as not to impede their actions. I will not take responsibility if you are hit by a stray bullet because of a poor move.”
I warned the spirited spectator military officers. It’s not good to see the spectators die, and I don’t want any of our magic riflemen to die because of the spectators. In fact, it would be best if they just watched.
“Enemy group approaching, will be in contact shortly.”
“Copy that. Prepare to fire the lightning cannon. I’ll leave the timing of the firing to the gunners. As before, the priority should be to avoid misfiring on friendly forces.”
While I was giving instructions through the magic transmission tube, the swarm of flying biters was rapidly approaching. Flying creatures are fast, aren’t they?
“All hands, you may now use all weapons at your disposal. Intercept!”
Just in time, a lightning cannon was fired at the same time I spoke, and with a roar, a blue-white light painted the port side of the magic airship. Now, the real work begins.
