Chapter 1933 Strong Suspicion
Chapter 1933 Strong Suspicion
Life at the City Hall was surprisingly… not bad.
Genevieve and Michael's lives got into an orderly rhythm. After they made their intention of joining the hunter squads known, they were met with almost no resistance.
In fact, Genevieve had truly believed that there would be some problem or the other and the staff would diplomatically deny their request, and instead force them into other jobs.
But no, that was not what happened.
After a few simple assessments that tested their combat ability as well as wilderness survival skills, both of them were cleared to become hunters.
Needless to say, Michael passed with flying colors. Despite his slightly timid personality, he was quite proficient in swordsmanship. And he had decent experience in fighting under his belt.
As for Genevieve, things had been difficult at first. She, after all, wasn't a combatant.
As an Enchantress, she specialized in the School of Enchantment, the arcane art of influencing minds and bending others' wills. Her greatest strength lay not in raw destructive power, but in manipulating the battlefield itself.
More often than not, an Enchantress' victory came from making others fight the battles for them.
Despite her lack of combat ability, Genevieve managed to persuade the others to let her join one of the hunting parties.
She argued that an Enchantress's talents were too valuable to be confined in closed rooms. Out in the field, she could influence enemies at critical moments, bolster her allies, create openings that brute force alone never could, and adapt her enchantments to the ever-changing flow of battle.
In the end, her confidence and reasoning won them over, and she earned her place among the hunters.
However, Genevieve knew the true reason she had been granted permission.
It was because of Lady Kesha.
An elven Mana Seed Magus who also sat at the council.
Genevieve didn't know how the elf had gotten to know about her, but if she had to make a guess, then it would most likely be because of Daerona.
From the days she'd spent at the City Hall, she had gathered enough intel to learn that the two were closely related. As for the specifics of their relationship, she was not sure.
But still, this came as a pleasant surprise. That a council member would support her was unexpected. Not only had Lady Kesha given Genevieve her approval, but she had also allowed her to reclaim several of her artifacts that had previously been confiscated.
Of course, after returning from the missions, those artifacts would still be going back into the vault. Even so, the fact that Genevieve was given first priority to withdraw multiple artifacts spoke volumes. It was a gesture of goodwill from Lady Kesha.
But Genevieve was no fool.
She knew there had to be a reason the elf was treating her with such generosity. People in Lady Kesha's position rarely acted without purpose. Genevieve had a strong suspicion she knew what that purpose was.
Lady Kesha wanted something from her. More specifically, she wanted Genevieve to become part of her political faction.
Presently, Genevieve and Michael stood at the training yard, waiting for their team members.
After ten days of training and studying the knowledge passed down by generations of hunters regarding the geography of the secret plane, the monsters that inhabited it, survival techniques, team tactics, and wilderness skills, they were finally ready for their first mission.
"Do you think it will be Daerona?" Michael casually asked.
He leaned against the wall, his gaze fixed on the entrance to the yard, curious to see who they would be paired with. He was dressed in his usual attire — a tunic, trousers, leather armor, and a sword strapped to his waist.
"Unless at least two of her team members were killed in action," Genevieve said, "I don't think so."
She, on the other hand, no longer looked like a sophisticated woman from Davos. Even the air about her had changed. She wore tight-fitted leather armor over sturdy trousers that allowed her swift, fluid movement.
Her auburn hair was neatly braided, and her cerulean eyes gleamed in the morning light. A dagger rested at her waist, while several rings and bracelets — clearly artifacts — adorned her hands and wrists.
"Any more news on the sun temple incident?" she asked.
"Not that I've heard," Michael said, shaking his head. "There was just that big battle between the two Rank 2 monsters last week. Things have been quiet since then."
The fact that two powerful monsters, who would normally never trespass into each other's territory, had fought such a brutal battle sent waves of shock and panic through the City Hall.
So much so that a few council members personally patrolled the area around City Hall, fearing a sudden attack. Nothing like it had ever happened before.
The stone angels had sung for almost a week, and then, immediately after, the battle between the Bridal Puppeteer and the Antlered High Priest had ensued.
The fighting had ended that very night, but the people of the City Hall remained on edge. Hunters were dispatched across the city to gather information and uncover the cause of such an anomaly.
A week had passed since the incident, yet the scouts had found nothing.
Genevieve had even asked around, speaking with hunters and anyone connected to them, hoping someone might have seen Adam in the city.
Unfortunately, no one had any information about him.
Apart from reports of a lone man who lived all by himself in the city and hunted monsters for food, Genevieve found nothing even remotely connected to Adam.
She couldn't help but worry about him.
Hopefully, I will be able to find him soon, she thought.
Amid her thoughts, a group of three Paladins arrived at the training yard, looking around as though searching for someone.
"Hey, I think that's them." Michael's words snapped Genevieve out of her thoughts.
She followed his gaze and saw a woman leading two men and heading their way.
With confident strides, the tall woman stopped before the pair.
"Genevieve and Michael?"
"That's us." Michael straightened.
Genevieve nodded.
"Good." The woman gave a curt nod.
"I'm Leah. Your team leader. We've been assigned to scout the area around the sun temple and gather any information about the disturbance that occurred last week."
Genevieve and Michael solemnly nodded.
"But before we leave," Leah said, her lips curling into a smirk.
"Show me what you got."
