Chapter 1935 The Invisible Monster
Chapter 1935 The Invisible Monster
Isabella spent the last week in trepidation.
Not only had no one entered the building and fallen for her trap, but the invisible monster lurking in the cellar hadn't made itself known again.
The creature had not made a single move. And that frightened Isabella more than anything.
Had the invisible monster come out of the cellar to look for food, or to just look around in general, then perhaps she might have an idea as to what kind of enemy she was facing.
But the fact that the monster hadn't even moved made her think up all kinds of scenarios.
What if it moved and I didn't notice?
What if it has already claimed this building as its own territory?
What if it's watching me?
What if it's already inside my bedroom?
What if it's… behind me?
With a sharp cry, she turned around and scanned her bedroom.
It was empty.
She began pacing back and forth, clearly aware that she had been overthinking for the past seven days, and that her imagination was the cause of her suffering.
But what else could she do?
The creature was invisible, so she didn't know how powerful it was. More importantly, judging from the bloodstains, it clearly knew about her existence, or it wouldn't have moved so cautiously in the hall.
According to Isabella, the invisible monster knew about her, but she knew nothing about him.
Ahhh, I'm going crazy!
And then suddenly…
Creak!
Eeeekk!
Isabella scrambled to her feet, trying to get to safety.
The invisible monster had finally made its move!
She instinctually ran toward the door. But then she paused.
No, I might finally get a good look at it.
I must not fear.
This is my territory!
I'll just… stand a little away from the portrait.
And that's what she did.
She stood a few steps away from where she usually stood, pretending to be a still painting inside the, well, painting.
The sound of slow footsteps echoed from the basement, causing Isabella to flinch in response.
Calm down. Calm down, she said to herself.
The monster can't reach me in my little world.
I have nothing to worry about.
Deep breaths! Deep breaths!
The sound of footsteps grew prominent, along with the creaking of the floorboards.
Isabella's gaze subconsciously darted to the side, toward the corridor leading to the staircase underground.
First came the shadow.
It has finally decided to show itself, Isabella thought to herself, alarmed.
Slowly, the owner of the footsteps came into view.
The invisible monster that had made the cellar its den finally showed itself.
But the moment Isabella's gaze landed on the so-called invisible monster, her eyes widened. It took a few more seconds for her to confirm she was not imagining things.
"Cillian?!" she blurted out.
Adam appeared in the hallway, naked and emaciated. He looked like he hadn't eaten in a year. And the sheer number of scars on his body made Isabella shudder.
"What in the world happened to you?!!"
"Isabella," Adam greeted her with a faint nod as he awkwardly covered his nakedness. "Is there anything I can wear around in this house?"
It was only then that Isabella realized that the human was naked.
The shock of realizing that the 'invisible monster' had been Adam all along, coupled with the pitiful state he was in, was so overwhelming that Isabella didn't even notice he was walking around without any clothes.
Embarrassed that she had been scared witless by this pitiful human, she was greatly ashamed.
"You!" she screamed through the portrait. "What do you think this place is?!"
"I'll take that as a no," Adam said, turning around and scanning the hall once again. "I wonder… why do monsters not show up here?"
"Isn't it obvious?" Isabella harrumphed.
"It's because they've marked this place as dangerous! All who come here are inevitably trapped in my little world. Unless, of course, they follow the rules to escape — which most of them don't!"
"I see," Adam murmured weakly. "I suppose I have you to thank for affording me this buffer period."
He turned to her and offered a faint smile. "Thank you."
Isabella wanted to scold the human further. But she could not repay kindness with hostility. That would be indecent of her. She had manners, of course.
Besides, Adam had already once escaped from her little world, so she couldn't harm him even if she wanted to. Those were the rules her little world abided by. But he didn't need to know that.
"Hmph!" She turned away.
A brief pause. Then she couldn't help but ask curiously, "Whatever did that to you?"
She pointed at all the scars on his body.
Adam's expression turned cold.
"That despicable werewolf in the sun temple," he said with murder in his voice.
Isabella's eyes slowly widened. "You escaped from the sun temple?!"
Then, remembering something, she quickly added, "Wait a minute! That commotion a week ago… could that be your doing?!"
Before Adam could answer, another sound of footsteps — this one light and hurried — echoed from the stairs. A few moments later, a gray ball of fur burst into the hall.
"Brother! Brother! Look, what I found!"
Valerian trotted over with a large piece of old, tattered cloth clamped in his mouth and stopped at Adam's feet.
"Ah, this will do." Adam crouched and patted the little fellow on the head before taking the cloth.
He tore it in two, using one to cover himself and wrapping the other around his torso for warmth.
At last, he let out a sigh of relief. "Oh, that's much better."
He turned to Isabella and said, "Our deal still stands?"
Isabella snapped out of her daze. "Hm? What deal?"
"That you'd tell me everything you know about this place," Adam reminded her, "and in return, I'd bring you guests."
"Oh, yes." Isabella nodded absentmindedly.
All of a sudden, Adam, who had escaped the grasp of the Antlered High Priest and caused such a commotion in the city last week, seemed very mysterious to her. She couldn't help but grow wary.
"Yes, sure, sure." She nodded, trying to appear nonchalant. "Bring me guests, and I'll tell you what you want to know."
"Very well, then." Adam nodded and prepared to leave with Valerian.
He and the little guy were starving. It was time to hunt some monsters. Although he was still very weak, he could still hunt a few weak wolves and fill his and Valerian's stomach.
Just as he was about to leave, Isabella couldn't help but call out.
"Hey, Cillian?"
"Yes?"
Isabella subconsciously gulped.
"Is… is that werewolf dead? Did you kill him?"
Adam's lips slowly curled into a grin so diabolical that it made Isabella shudder.
"Not yet."
